Interactions among traits that build a complex structure may be represented as genetic covariation and correlation. Genetic correlations may act as constraints, deflecting the evolutionary response from the direction of natural selection. We investigated the relative importance of drift, selection, and constraints in driving skull divergence in a group of related toad species. The distributional range of these species encompasses very distinct habitats with important climatic differences and the species are primarily distinguished by differences in their skulls. Some parts of the toad skull, such as the snout, may have functional relevance in reproductive ecology, detecting water cues. Thus, we hypothesized that the species skull divergence was driven by natural selection associated with climatic variation. However, given that all species present high correlations among skull traits, our second prediction was of high constraints deflecting the response to selection. We first extracted the main morphological direction that is expected to be subjected to selection by using within- and between-species covariance matrices. We then used evolutionary regressions to investigate whether divergence along this direction is explained by climatic variation between species. We also used quantitative genetics models to test for a role of random drift versus natural selection in skull divergence and to reconstruct selection gradients along species phylogeny. Climatic variables explained high proportions of between-species variation in the most selected axis. However, most evolutionary responses were not in the direction of selection, but aligned with the direction of allometric size, the dimension of highest phenotypic variance in the ancestral population. We conclude that toad species have responded to selection related to climate in their skulls, yet high evolutionary constraints dominated species divergence and may limit species responses to future climate change.  相似文献

Bayesian clustering methods are typically used to identify barriers to gene flow, but they are prone to deduce artificial subdivisions in a study population characterized by an isolation‐by‐distance pattern (IbD). Here we analysed the landscape genetic structure of a population of wild boars (Sus scrofa) from south‐western Germany. Two clustering methods inferred the presence of the same genetic discontinuity. However, the population in question was characterized by a strong IbD pattern. While landscape‐resistance modelling failed to identify landscape features that influenced wild boar movement, partial Mantel tests and multiple regression of distance matrices (MRDMs) suggested that the empirically inferred clusters were separated by a genuine barrier. When simulating random lines bisecting the study area, 60% of the unique barriers represented, according to partial Mantel tests and MRDMs, significant obstacles to gene flow. By contrast, the random‐lines simulation showed that the boundaries of the inferred empirical clusters corresponded to the most important genetic discontinuity in the study area. Given the degree of habitat fragmentation separating the two empirical partitions, it is likely that the clustering programs correctly identified a barrier to gene flow. The differing results between the work published here and other studies suggest that it will be very difficult to draw general conclusions about habitat permeability in wild boar from individual studies.  相似文献

Bhoj (1997c) proposed a new ranked set sampling (NRSS) procedure for a specific two‐parameter family of distributions when the sample size is even. This NRSS procedure can be applied to one‐parameter family of distributions when the sample size is even. However, this procedure cannot be used if the sample size is odd. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a modified version of the NRSS procedure which can be used for one‐parameter distributions when the sample size is odd. Simple estimator for the parameter based on proposed NRSS is derived. The relative precisions of this estimator are higher than those of other estimators which are based on other ranked set sampling procedures and the best linear unbiased estimator using all order statistics.  相似文献

A chiral biosensing platform was developed using betamethasone (BMZ) as chiral recognition element through multilayered electrochemical deposition of BMZ, overoxidized polypyrrole, and nanosheets of graphene (OPPy‐BMZ/GR), for enantio‐recognition of mandelic acid (MA) enantiomers. The deposited film was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, differential pulse voltammetry, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. It was shown that the chiral sensing platform can discriminate R‐ and S‐MA differential pulse voltammetry signals, at the voltages of 1.35 and 1.33 V (vs Ag/AgCl), respectively. To tackle the problem of highly overlapping peaks of these enantiomers, the partial least squares (PLS) regression and genetic algorithm‐PLS (GA‐PLS) were used for simultaneous quantification of MA enantiomers. Generally, variable selection by genetic algorithm provided an improvement in prediction results when compared to full‐voltammogram PLS. Good analytical performances were obtained despite the inherent complexity of the simultaneous determination.  相似文献

Animal welfare has become an important subject of public and political debate, leading to the necessity of an objective evaluation system for on-farm use. As welfare is a multi-dimensional concept, it makes sense to use a multi-criteria aggregation system to obtain an overall welfare score. Such an aggregation system is provided by the Welfare Quality® Network. The present paper focusses on the assessment of the multi-criteria evaluation model included in the Welfare Quality® protocol for growing pigs in order to aggregate the animal-based indicators first to criteria, then to principles and finally to an overall welfare score. Specifically, the importance of the indicators on the overall assessment of growing pig farms is analysed in a given population which consisted of a total of 198 protocol assessments carried out on a sample of 24 farms in Germany. By means of partial least squares modelling, the influence of measures in the calculation procedure is estimated by calculation and interpretation of Variable Importance for Projection (VIP) scores. Variable Importance for Projection scores revealed some meaningful, unexpected influences as the multi-criteria evaluation model of Welfare Quality® aimed at avoiding interferences and double-counting. Some of these influences led to the assumption that some measures might have potential as iceberg indicators, whereas others showed lesser importance. Thus, feasibility can be gained by the deletion and special weighting of indicators according to their importance. Altogether, the study is an essential contribution to the further development of the Welfare Quality® protocols as well as the application of multi-criteria decision systems in the field of animal welfare science in general.  相似文献

The amount of variation in species composition among sampling units or beta diversity has become a primary tool for connecting the spatial structure of species assemblages to ecological processes. Many different measures of beta diversity have been developed. Among them, the total variance in the community composition matrix has been proposed as a single‐number estimate of beta diversity. In this study, I first show that this measure summarizes the compositional variation among sampling units after nonlinear transformation of species abundances. Therefore, it is not always adequate for estimating beta diversity. Next, I propose an alternative approach for calculating beta diversity in which variance is substituted by a weighted measure of concentration (i.e., an inverse measure of evenness). The relationship between this new measure of beta diversity and so‐called multiple‐site dissimilarity measures is also discussed.  相似文献

Aim Spatial autocorrelation in ecological data can inflate Type I errors in statistical analyses. There has also been a recent claim that spatial autocorrelation generates ‘red herrings’, such that virtually all past analyses are flawed. We consider the origins of this phenomenon, the implications of spatial autocorrelation for macro‐scale patterns of species diversity and set out a clarification of the statistical problems generated by its presence. Location To illustrate the issues involved, we analyse the species richness of the birds of western/central Europe, north Africa and the Middle East. Methods Spatial correlograms for richness and five environmental variables were generated using Moran's I coefficients. Multiple regression, using both ordinary least‐squares (OLS) and generalized least squares (GLS) assuming a spatial structure in the residuals, were used to identify the strongest predictors of richness. Autocorrelation analyses of the residuals obtained after stepwise OLS regression were undertaken, and the ranks of variables in the full OLS and GLS models were compared. Results Bird richness is characterized by a quadratic north–south gradient. Spatial correlograms usually had positive autocorrelation up to c. 1600 km. Including the environmental variables successively in the OLS model reduced spatial autocorrelation in the residuals to non‐detectable levels, indicating that the variables explained all spatial structure in the data. In principle, if residuals are not autocorrelated then OLS is a special case of GLS. However, our comparison between OLS and GLS models including all environmental variables revealed that GLS de‐emphasized predictors with strong autocorrelation and long‐distance clinal structures, giving more importance to variables acting at smaller geographical scales. Conclusion Although spatial autocorrelation should always be investigated, it does not necessarily generate bias. Rather, it can be a useful tool to investigate mechanisms operating on richness at different spatial scales. Claims that analyses that do not take into account spatial autocorrelation are flawed are without foundation.  相似文献

The metabolic changes in hippocampus, temporal cortex and prefrontal cortex in SD rats along with aging were explored using a metabonomic approach, which based on high resolution “magic angle spinning” 1H NMR spectroscopy. The metabolite profiles were analyzed by partial least squares-discriminant analysis, and the results showed that the metabolites of the above three brain regions in old rats were dramatically different from that in the adult and young rats. The old rats showed increased myo-inositol and lactate in all of the three brain regions, and decreased N-acetylaspartate in temporal and frontal cortex, Glutamate–GABA level became imbalance in temporal cortex of old rats. In addition, compared with the adult female rats, male rats had higher levels of N-acetylaspartate, taurine, and creatine in temporal or frontal cortex. The age-related metabolic changes may indicate the early functional alterations of neural cells in these brain regions, especially the temporal cortex. The gender-related metabolic changes suggest the significance of the hormonal regulation in brain metabolism. Our work highlights the potential of metabolic profiling to enhance our understanding of biological mechanisms of brain aging.  相似文献
