This study evaluates the amount and distribution of Pb and Cd in roadside soils adjacent to two main roads in Irbid, Jordan, from October 2001 to July 2002. A total of 260 samples were collected from Irbid-Howara Street and Yarmouk University Street. Lead and Cd content were measured using Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrometry. The environmental significance of this study is discussed in terms of the influence of traffic density on Pb and Cd concentrations in roadside soils, and enrichment factors were calculated to evaluate the degree of pollution. The accuracy of the results obtained has been examined and two standard reference materials, CRM 142 R (soil) and SRM 2709 (soil), were analyzed to confirm the accuracy of the results. The precision of the measurements was assessed in terms of relative standard deviation (RSD) using five replicate analyses of samples collected from the roadside sites. RSD values for Pb and Cd were found to be less than 6%. The overall Pb concentration in roadside soil samples was 325 and 431 μg g?1 for Pb and 1.142 and 1.135 μg g?1 for Cd in Yarmouk University Street and Irbid-Houwa Street, respectively. Results indicated that levels of Pb and Cd were decreasing as the distance from the road increases. Enrichment factor results were 655 and 826 for Pb, and 252 and 237 for Cd in Yarmouk University Street and Irbid-Houwa Street, respectively. 相似文献

Humans are frequently exposed to combinations of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and Arsenic (As) but there is a paucity of actual data on the molecular effects of these agents at low dose levels. The present factorial design studies were undertaken in rats to examine the effects of these agents at LOEL dose levels on a number of molecular parameters of oxidative stress in hematopoietic and renal organ systems following oral exposure in drinking water at 30, 90 and 180 day time points. Results of these studies demonstrated dynamic, time-dependent alterations in both molecular targets and inducible oxidative stress protective systems in target cell populations. In general, cellular protective systems, which protected against oxidative damage at the 90 day time point, appeared to be finite such that molecular manifestations of oxidative stress became statistically significant at the 180 day time point for several of the combination exposure groups. These data demonstrate the importance of duration of exposure in assessing the toxic potential of Pb, Cd and As mixtures at low dose levels. 相似文献

Two-day-old seedlings of maize (Zea mays L.) were incubated on Cd and Pb nitrate solutions at the concentrations that inhibited root growth approximately by 50% after two-day-long incubation (LC50; 10–4 and 10–3 M, respectively) or completely terminated growth of the primary root after one-day-long incubation (LC; 5 × 10–4 and 10–2 M, respectively). Cd and Pb contents were measured using an anodic inversion voltammetric technique in a flow injection system and a histochemical method. At LC50, Cd and Pb were discerned, by histochemical techniques, in all root apical tissues, whereas in the root hair zone, the heavy metals were primarily accumulated in the apoplast of the rhizodermis and cortex and to a lesser extent, in the vascular tissues and parenchyma cells surrounding the metaxylem vessels. Insignificant accumulation of Cd and Pb in the pericycle probably explains why root branching was tolerant to these agents. At LC, Cd and Pb were found in the apoplast of all root tissues, in accordance with the practically complete inhibition of root growth and branching. Irrespectively of Cd and Pb concentrations in the external solution, the metal contents in the root apex exceeded those in the basal region. Procion dyes were used to assess cell death inflicted by Cd and Pb. At LC, the root cap and meristematic cells perished, together with the rhizodermal cells and the outer cortical cells of the root apex, whereas only the rhizodermal cells in the root apical region died at LC50. The evidence that Cd and Pb cross the endodermal barrier at LC presumes that, at lower metal concentrations, the Casparian strip and plasmalemma of the endodermis regulate the transport of these metals into the central cylinder. In an attempt to know whether highly consumed food might contribute to metal exposure, we analyzed cadmium, lead, and mercury
in 27 rice grain samples commonly consumed in Saudi Arabia by atomic absorption spectrometry after acid digestion. The mean
concentrations and ranges of cadmium, lead, and mercury in tested rice samples were 20.261 (range <DL-178.026 μg/kg), 134.819
(range 23.1–1529.0 μg/kg), and 3.186 (range <DL-43.573 μg/kg), respectively. The results showed high concentrations of metals
and in some cases exceeded the Provisional Tolerance Weekly Intake (PTWI) recommended by FAO/WHO. It was also noted that different
rice grain samples had varying concentrations of these metals. Because the bulk of literature warns against the cumulative

Synthetic chelates, such as ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA), have been shown to enhance phytoextraction of Pb from contaminated soil but also cause leaching of heavy metal-chelate complexes, posing a groundwater contamination threat. In a soil column study, we examined the effect of EDTA and a biodegradable chelate [S,S] isomere of ethylene diamine disuccinate ([S,S]-EDDS), newly introduced in phytoextraction research, on the uptake of Pb by the Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa) and Pb leaching through the soil profile. Soil water sorption characteristics were modified by acrylamide hydrogel. The addition of 0.1 and 0.2% (w/w) of hydrogel amendments increased soil field water capacity from initial 24.6% to 28.5% and 31.3%, respectively. The additions of 2.5, 5 and 10 mmol EDTA kg–1 soil were more effective in enhancing Pb plant uptake than comparable [S,S]-EDDS treatments, but caused (as also 10 mmol kg–1 [S,S]-EDDS additions) unacceptably high Pb leaching in treatments with any soil water sorption conditions tested. The most efficient level of EDTA (10 mmol kg–1) enhanced plant Pb uptake by 97 times compared to the control. Shoots Pb concentrations reached 500 mg kg–1 of dry biomass. However, in this treatment 36.2% of total initial Pb was leached from the soil during the first four weeks after chelate addition. Hydrogel soil amendments were more effective in treatments with [S,S]-EDDS than with EDTA. In treatments with 10 mmol kg–1[S,S]-EDDS hydrogel amended soils, plant Pb uptake was significantly reduced and Pb leach was as high as 44.2% of total initial soil Pb. At lower [S,S]-EDDS concentrations, the effect of hydrogel soil amendment on Pb leaching was the opposite. The addition of 5 mmol kg–1 [S,S]-EDDS soil to the soil amended with 0.2% hydrogel increased Pb uptake by 18 times while only 0.2% of total initial Pb was leached. In order to analyze the distribution of lead between cell walls and plasmalemma, two-day-old maize seedlings (Zea mays L.) were incubated for 24 h on a solution of lead nitrate at a concentration causing 50% inhibition of root growth (10–5 M). Using the histochemical technique (precipitation of lead dithizonate), the distribution of lead in plasmolyzed and nonplasmolyzed cells of the root cortex was compared. This allowed us to separate the lead bound by cell walls from the lead located on the protoplast surface and in the periplasmic space. The plasmolysis was conducted prior to histochemical reaction by the incubation of seedling roots in 0.6 M sucrose solution for 30 min. The lead precipitates were located in cell walls and on the surface of protoplast. A small amount of lead was found in periplasmic space of some cells in root cortex. It is suggested that the lead is bound not only to the cell wall matrix but also to the plasmalemma. 相似文献

Recently developed chiral HPLC columns CHIRIS AD1 and CHIRIS AD2 have been demonstrated to separate racemic, configurationally unstable ethyl-7-chloro-2-oxo-5-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-1,4-benzodiazepine-3-carboxylate (1) and its 3-methyl congener 2; fast on-column enantiomerization of configurationally unstable 1 was observed, however. Addition of 0.1% of AcOH to the eluting mixture inhibits enantiomerization, whereas the same percentage of Et(3)N completely precludes enantioseparation, suggesting base-catalysis by free beta-aminoethyl groups, present in low percentage in chiral stationary phase (CSP). When both CSPs were prepared under conditions of nonexhaustive acylation by N-DNB-alpha-aminoacids, no separation of 1 was observed. The rate of enantiomerization on CHIRIS AD2 was determined at 25 degrees C, the mechanism is discussed, and experimental results correlated with calculated relative stabilities of the tautomers la-c. Absolute (3S) configuration of (+) enantiomers of 1 and 2 was determined by comparison of their eluation profile to that of (+/-)-3 and (3S)-(+)-3, taking into account relative (psia or psie) configuration of the prevailing conformer in solution. 相似文献

Charge carrier dynamics in organolead iodide perovskites is analyzed by employing time‐resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy with several ps time resolution. The measurements performed by varying photoexcitation intensity over five orders of magnitude enable separation of photoluminescence components related to geminate and nongeminate charge carrier recombination and to address the dynamics of an isolated geminate electron–hole pair. Geminate recombination dominates at low excitation fluence and determines the initial photoluminescence decay. This decay component is remarkably independent of the material structure and experimental conditions. It is demonstrated that dependences of the geminate and nongeminate radiative recombination components on excitation intensity, repetition rate, and temperature, are hardly compatible with carrier trapping and exciton dissociation models. On the basis of semiclassical and quantum mechanical numerical calculation results, it is argued that the fast photoluminescence decay originates from gradual spatial separation of photogenerated weakly bound geminate charge pairs. 相似文献

The absorption of lead from loops of small intestinein situ was investigated in rats in which iron absorption was increased by stimuli varying in type, intensity, or duration. Lead
absorption was increased by a short period of severe iron restriction before any change in hematological indices became apparent.
A period of hypoxia, which markedly increased iron absorption, did not influence absorption of lead. An extended period of
moderate iron restriction resulted in a marked reduction in liver iron stores and increased iron absorption throughout the
17-wk experiment. Under these conditions lead absorption was initially also increased, but after 12 wk, when iron intake had
become adequate to meet essential requirements, lead absorption was similar to that in iron-supplemented rats. These results
are discussed in the light of evidence for a receptor-mediated absorption process for iron. 相似文献
