The ability of the filamentous fungus Verticillium marquandii for Zn2+ and Pb2+ uptake from aqueous solution was studied. The 24-h-old living mycelium bound Zn2+ and Pb2+ (206.2 and 324.5 mg/g dry weight, respectively) effectively, in contrast to a very low Zn2+ uptake by autoclaved mycelium (20.2 mg/g). The most effective results were noted when the metals were introduced as acetates and incubated with mycelium for 24 h in case of Zn2+ while Pb2+ achieved the maximum level of metal binding after as early as 3 h. The cell wall was the main site of effective Zn2+ and Pb2+ binding by V. marquandii mycelium (91.0–93.6% of metals were located in cell wall after 24 h of exposure). The metabolic inhibitors: antimycin A and sodium azide had a strong limitation effect on Zn2+ uptake by a 24-h-old living mycelium, whereas Pb2+ binding did not decrease to a large extent. The freshly obtained protoplasts accumulated Zn2+ and Pb2+ on a low level in comparison with cells at different stages of cell wall regeneration. The use of regenerating protoplasts showed that resynthesis of cell wall was necessary for high binding of Zn2+, whereas Pb2+ uptake on the significant level took place during cell wall regeneration. Using intracellular recording, we studied the effects of lead ions on the synaptic responses of neurons of the superior cervical ganglion (SCG) of the rat. Three groups of SCG neurons were found; they differed from each other in directions of the changes evoked by Pb2+ applications and in their sensitivity to this agent. In two groups of the phasic SCG neurons, Pb2+ decreased the amplitude of EPSP evoked by stimulation of the cervical sympathetic nerve with EC50 of (2.2 ± 0.2) · 10-6 M and (3.55 ± 0.29) · 10-5 M, respectively. In the tonic neurons, 2 · 10-6 M Pb2+ increased the EPSP amplitude by 27 ± 2%, on average, as compared with the control values. We postulate that the specificity of responses of these three groups of SCG neurons to the action of Pb2+ is determined by the different subunit composition of the nicotinic cholinoreceptors in the membrane of these cells.  相似文献

Implantation of temporary pacemaker lead is commonly performed procedure and is usually safe, but can sometimes develop rare and serious complication like intracardiac lead knotting which may require challenging retrieval techniques. We report a case of successful percutaneous retrieval of unusually knotted right internal jugular venous temporary pacing lead via left femoral transvenous approach using snare over a long sheath after cutting the electrode proximally and thus avoiding any surgical intervention.  相似文献

Contamination of surface soils with lead (Pb) is a global concern due to the release of hazardous materials containing the metal element. In order to explore ways to remediate contaminated soils with less impact on environment and costs, this study aimed at screening ornamental plant species exposed to Pb gradient in spiked soils for Pb phytoextraction. Twenty-one ornamental plant species that currently grow in Pakistan, were selected to assess their potential for Pb accumulation. Pot experiments were conducted to evaluate the accumulative properties of the different plant species in unspiked control (Pb = 0) and spiked soils with different levels of Pb at 500, 1000, 1500 and 2000 mg Pb kg?1 of soil. Biotranslocation factor (TF), Enrichment factor (EF) and Bioconcentration factor (CF) were calculated to assess the phytoremediation potential of tested plant species after seven weeks of exposure. Out of 21 plant species, Pelargonium hortorum and Mesembryanthemum criniflorum performed better and accumulated more than 1000 mg Pb kg?1 of shoot dry biomass when they were grown in 500, 1000 and 1500 mg Pb kg?1 contaminated soils. Both plants had no significant (P < 0.05) variation in the total dry biomass with increasing soil Pb concentration indicating a high tolerance to Pb. Considering the capacity of Pb accumulation, total dry biomass, TF, EF &; CF indices, Pelargonium hortorum and Mesembryanthemum criniflorum could be considered as Pb hyperaccumulators and could have the potential to be used in phytoremediation.  相似文献

This investigation reports, the effect of the concentration of erbium and lead ions on the physical, structural and optical properties of lead borosilicate glasses. These glasses were synthesized by the melt quench method. In the synthesis, the concentration of the erbium (Er3+) ion was varied in the order of 0.0, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mol% and lead (Pb2+) ion was varied in the order of 30, 29.9, 29.5, 29 and 28 mol%. The glasses were analyzed using X‐ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT‐IR) and UV–vis–NIR spectroscopy. From XRD, the amorphous nature of lead borosilicate glasses was confirmed. The functional groups which were present in the glasses have been identified by analyzing the FT‐IR spectrum. From the absorption spectra, the oscillator strengths as well as the Judd–Ofelt (JO) intensity parameters were determined and compared with other hosts. The JO intensity parameters were further used to calculate certain radiative properties for the excited luminescent levels of Er3+ ion. From emission spectra, full width at half maxima (FWHM), stimulated emission cross‐sections (σe) and certain lasing parameters were evaluated and compared with reference host glasses. The lifetimes of 4I13/2 excited level of Er3+ ion have also been recorded and analyzed. The calculated and experimental lifetimes were compared in terms of quantum efficiencies. From the photoluminescence analysis, the erbium doped lead borosilicate glasses well suited for optical fiber amplifiers are discussed.  相似文献

Herein, we report on unique bimetallic PtPb/Pt core/shell nanodisks consisting of structurally ordered PtPb hexagonal nanoplates as the core and the well‐organized Pt as the shell, as extremely active and selective catalysts towards CH3OH reformation. We found that the created Pt‐Pb nanodisks/C show the composition‐dependent activity with the optimized PtPb0.56 nanodisks/C being the most active for the CH3OH reformation to H2, 5.1 times higher than those of the commercial Pt/C. Significantly, only very limited carbon monoxide (CO) is produced during the CH3OH reformation, which is crucial for the practical application in fuel cells. The PtPb0.56 nanodisks/C is also more active for CH3OH reformation than PtPb hexagonal nanoplates/C and PtPb0.58 nanoparticles/C. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results reveal that the high ratio of Pt (0) to Pt (II) in Pt‐Pb nanodisks/C enhances the CH3OH reformation to H2, while the high content of Pb (0) is beneficial for decrease the CO production. Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS) of CO adsorption shows that Pt‐Pb nanodisks can promote the activation of CO molecules by forming the carboxylate (CO2δ?) intermediates, leading to the low CO production.  相似文献

Lead was ubiquitous on Caribbean sugar plantations, where it was used extensively in the production of sugar and rum. Previous studies suggest that skeletal lead contents can be used to identify African‐born individuals (as opposed to Creoles) among slave burials found in the New World. To test this hypothesis, we measured lead concentrations in enamel samples from 26 individuals from the Newton Plantation cemetery in Barbados, which was in use from around 1660 to 1820, and compared the results with enamel 87Sr/86Sr measurements that had been previously obtained for the same population. Results show a clear association between low (i.e., below 1 ppm) enamel lead concentrations and higher enamel 87Sr/86Sr ratios which have previously been interpreted as being indicative of African birth, suggesting that individuals with low enamel lead levels were indeed born in Africa as opposed to the New World. Based on these results, we propose that enamel lead measurements provide an effective and inexpensive way to determine African birth from skeletal remains. Furthermore, the lead measurements can provide useful insights into the health status and childhood environment of enslaved Africans during the colonial period. The sorptive behavior of bacteria—iron oxide composites was investigated in batch metal sorption assays using ferrihydrite in isolation (0.13 and 0.14 g/L ferrihydrite in cadmium and lead systems, respectively) as well as in combination with Bacillus subtilis (0.25 g/L adsorbent mixture) and Escherichia coli (0.27 g/L adsorbent mixture). A pH range from 3.0 to 6.5 was studied using total metal concentrations of 1.0 × 10 ? 4.0 and 3.2 × 10 ? 5 M with adsorbent mixtures proportioned on a 1:1 mass/volume basis. The log of the apparent surface complex formation constants (log K S M ) and sorption capacity (S max ) values were determined by fitting the experimental data to one-site Langmuir sorption isotherms. The one-site model effectively described the sorption data (r 2 > 0.9), where Cd 2 + exhibited somewhat lower sorption affinities (log K S M = ?3 for ferrihydrite, ?1.7 for B. subtilis–ferrihydrite, and ?1.1 for E. coli–ferrihydrite) than Pb 2 + (log K S M = ?0.9 for ferrihydrite, ? 0.2 forB. subtilis–ferrihydrite, and –0.1 for E. coli–ferrihydrite). The corresponding S max values for Cd 2 + and Pb 2 + on ferrihydrite were 0.78 mmole/g and 1.34 mmole/g, respectively. For the B. subtilis–ferrihydrite composites, Cd 2 + and Pb 2 + S max values were lower at 0.29 mmole/g and 0.5 mmole/g, respectively. Similar values were determined for the E. coli–ferrihydrite composites (0.15 mmole/g and 0.68 mmole/g for Cd 2 + and Pb 2 + , respectively). The sorption of Cd 2 + and Pb 2 + by each of the sorbent systems exhibited a strong dependence on pH with sorption edges in the range of pH 4.0 to 7.3. The observed S max of the composites were lower than values predicted upon available site additivity (Cd 2 + B. subtilis ?ferrihydrite : 0.29 mmole/g (observed) < 0.57 mmole/g (calculated); Cd 2 + E. coli ?ferrihydrite : 0.15 mmole/g (observed) < 0.44 mmole/ g (calculated); Pb 2 + B. subtilis ?ferrihydrite : 0.5 mmole/g (observed) < 0.805 mmole/g (calculated); Pb 2 + E. coli –ferrihydrite : 0.68 mmole/g (observed) < 0.775 mmole/g (calculated)), implying that a masking of reactive surface sites by attachment had occurred between the bacteria and ferrihydrite. Electrophoretic mobility analysis indicated that the ferrihydrite surface properties dominate the net surface charge for each composite system with lesser contributions from the bacteria.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to measure the levels of lead, cadmium, and mercury in the muscle tissues of halfbeaks (Hyporhampus affinis) captured at five stations along the East Java coast, Indonesia. This fish is one of the important species and consumed by local people as a cheap source of protein. We evaluated the hazard level posed by the metals in relation to the maximum residual limit for human consumption and to estimate the weekly intake and compare it with the provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI). The Pb, Cd, and Hg concentrations in fish at all stations ranged from 0.006 to 0.023 mg/kg, 0.007 to 0.024 mg/kg, and 0.047 to 0.055 mg/kg wet weight, respectively. All samples of halfbeaks collected from this area appear to be safe for human consumption because their metals’ levels are below the permissible limit for human consumption and the maximum weekly intakes are below the recommended values of PTWI.  相似文献
