Migration is ubiquitous and can strongly shape food webs and ecosystems. Less familiar, however, is that the majority of life cycle, seasonal and diel migrations in nature are partial migrations: only a fraction of the population migrates while the other individuals remain in their resident ecosystem. Here, we demonstrate different impacts of partial migration rendering it fundamental to our understanding of the significance of migration for food web and ecosystem dynamics. First, partial migration affects the spatiotemporal distribution of individuals and the food web and ecosystem-level processes they drive differently than expected under full migration. Second, whether an individual migrates or not is regularly correlated with morphological, physiological, and/or behavioural traits that shape its food-web and ecosystem-level impacts. Third, food web and ecosystem dynamics can drive the fraction of the population migrating, enabling the potential for feedbacks between the causes and consequences of migration within and across ecosystems. These impacts, individually and in combination, can yield unintuitive effects of migration and drive the dynamics, diversity and functions of ecosystems. By presenting the first full integration of partial migration and trophic (meta-)community and (meta-)ecosystem ecology, we provide a roadmap for studying how migration affects and is affected by ecosystem dynamics in a changing world.  相似文献

Dispersal propensity of green leafhoppers was compared between a tropical species, Nephotettix virescens, and a temperate species, N. cincticeps. The flight ability was measured with tethered flight technique under laboratory conditions (25°C, 16L-8D). The pre-flight period was shorter and the flight duration was longer in N. virescens than in N. cincticeps in both sexes. No significant correlations were found between the flight activity and morphometric characters for either of the two species. The results suggested that dispersal propensity of N. virescens is higher than that of N. cincticeps.  相似文献

The coevolutionary relationship between fungus-growing ants (Formicidae: Attini: Attina) and their symbionts has been well studied in the Panamanian rain forests. To further understand the ecological context of these evolutionary relationships, we have examined the population-genetic structure of the fungus-growing ant species Mycetomoellerius mikromelanos Cardenas, Schultz, Adams 2021 in the Panama Canal Zone. We specifically investigated the presence of population structure, the significance of geographic features (i.e., creeks) limiting gene flow, and relatedness between ant colonies. To accomplish this, we genotyped 85 ant colonies from nine creeks across an approximately 30 km transect in Parque National Soberanía, Panama, using double-digest restriction-site-associated DNA sequencing. We did not find distinct population structure using two genetic clustering methods; however, we did detect an effect of isolation by distance. Furthermore, related colonies were frequently detected on the same creek or neighboring creeks, and some at further geographic distances. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that new colonies tend to establish on natal creeks and occasionally on distant creeks following long-distance dispersal events. We discuss how population-genetic patterns reveal the natural history of M. mikromelanos in Parque National Soberanía and how these results fit into the context of fungus-growing ant mutualisms. The breeding sites of Styan's grasshopper warblers are restricted to small islands and distributed discretely. The study on the marked population was conducted on two islets, Okitsu-jima and Ohtsukue-jima, located near Fukuoka, Japan, from 1981 to 1989. About 20 and 70 birds bred on the two islets, respectively, and the mean density of breeding pairs was 25.5 ha−1. The dispersal pattern and population, structure were examined. Adult birds returned to the same breeding site. Males always reoccupied the same territory as in previous years but females not. Males were more philopatric and only female yearlings dispersed over long distances and moved between the breeding sites in Hakata Bay. The returning rate was 0.57 for adults, and 0.21 for juveniles. The age distribution of birds at Ohtsukue-jima was almost stable, while that at Okitsu-jima was unstable because it was a marginal habitat for the birds. Estimating from the dispersal pattern and age structure of this warbler the population near Fukuoka consists of only four islets and is almost stable.  相似文献

Four experimental stream channels were used to study instantaneous downstream dispersal rates of young trout, Salmo trutta L., and salmon, S. salur L ., relative to four different water velocities.
Young salmon showed a high rate of dispersal at a low velocity of 7.5 cm s−1 and lower rates at higher velocities of 25 to 70cm s−1. Trout showed their lowest rate at 25cm s−1 with a slightly higher rate at 7.5 cm s−1 and increasingly higher rates at velocities in excess of 25 cm s−1. These results are consistent with field observations on the velocity preferences of young trout and salmon.  相似文献

The meiobenthos are regarded as the first metazoans to appear on earth This paper considers some aspects of their role in the marine ecosystem over evolutionary time. It is speculatively suggested that they have had a profound influence on many structural and functional attributes of the marine ecosystem as we see it today, both in the benthic and pelagic realms. Certain features such as size spectra, the life-history characteristics of the macrobenthos, and the energetic balance between ecological compartments of the marine ecosystem are considered to result from evolution away from negative interactions with the meiobenthos.  相似文献

The currently widespread abandoning of agricultural land use in Western Europe offers new opportunities for ecological restoration and nature conservation. This is illustrated for abandoned arable fields and for permanent grasslands cut for hay after the cessation of fertilizer application. Although initiated by a sudden reduction of nutrient input to the system, the changing nutrient supply from the soil is considered to be the main driving force of succession. The soil nutrient supply is affected by soil organisms, both directly (root symbionts and herbivores) and indirectly (nutrient mineralization from dead organic matter). It is argued that because of the close association of changes in species diversity with changes in the functioning of ecosystems, biodiversity has to be studied in an ecosystem ecology context.  相似文献

Dispersal by young mammals away from their natal site is generallythought to reduce inbreeding, with its attendant negative fitnessconsequences. Genetic data from the dwarf mongoose, a pack-livingcarnivore common in African savannas, indicate that there areexceptions to this generalization. In dwarf mongoose populationsin the Serengeti National Park, Tanzania, breeding pairs arecommonly related, and close inbreeding has no measurable effecton offspring production or adult survival. Inbreeding occursbecause average relatedness among potential mates within a packis high, because mating patterns within the pack are randomwith respect to the relatedness of mates, and because dispersaldoes little to decrease the relatedness among mates. Young femalesare more likely to leave a pack when the dominant male is aclose relative but are relatively infrequent dispersers. Abstract The seasonality of the field population of Lagria hirta L. is remarkable: adults occur only from the end of June to the beginning of August, whereas larvae exist in the whole year except June. Based on the data of field observations and larval head-width measuring, the author demonstrated that L. hirta would reproduce in a very short interval in June to August; eggs hatch and develop (molt) into the 3rd, 4th or 5th (sometimes 6th) instar before winter; after larval overwintering, the beetles complete the larval development after total 8–10 times of molts and pupate in June. The larval development rate is decreased but not completely stopped during winter (the nonparametric median test, P<0. 01). This result changes the hitherto opinion of 4 or 5-instar larval development of L. hirta and will stimulate the studies on its life history.  相似文献
