The feeding ecology of whitefish, Coregonus , larvae in oligotrophic Lake Sarnen and eutrophic Lake Hallwil is presented, taking into consideration the size of the prey ingested in relation to the mouth size of larvae and to the availability of zooplankton.
When larvae grow from 10 to 16 mm their mouth width increases from 500 to 1000 μm while their gape height, with the mouth open at 45 and 90°, increases from 200 to 400 μm and from 400 to 700 μm, respectively, whichever lake is considered.
The differences found in the mean prey width between the two lakes arise in part from the composition of diets, and in part from differences in size of the available prey organisms. Whatever the origin of the larvae and the taxon we consider, larvae seem to ingest the most abundant prey size without selecting the biggest ones available even if, from a mechanical point of view, they would be able to ingest them.
Taking into account the generally low density of zooplankton in the uppermost layer of the lake, we conclude that whitefish larvae eat in the manner such as to decrease the cost of prey capture, in terms of energy and time, by choosing the more abundant prey available. 相似文献

The presence of cilia was documented in the hindgut of larval Atlantic halibut ( Hippoglossus hippoglossus ) with the use of electron microscopy. The present study was carried out on the Catalan coast, the northern limit of the geographic distribution of Pomatomus saltatrix (Linnaeus, 1766) in the Mediterranean. Within the area studied, both larvae and adults were more abundant in the southern part, where surface temperature was slightly higher than in the north. Spawning of P. saltatrix was limited to the warmest months, from July to September, when the surface temperature was about 25° C, The most common larval sizes, between 2.25 and 2.75 mm s.l. , were distributed over the continental shelf, and the greatest concentrations were found between 20 and 100 m, suggesting an inshore spawning. Larvae, including the smallest sizes, were found in the most superficial layers and no evidence of vertical migration was observed. The species was regularly fished in the southern zone, maximum monthly catches ranging between 10–20 tonnes. The presence of adults in the coastal zone showed a marked seasonality closely related to temperatur, the lowest catches corresponding to the coldest months. 相似文献

Abstract The seasonality of the field population of Lagria hirta L. is remarkable: adults occur only from the end of June to the beginning of August, whereas larvae exist in the whole year except June. Based on the data of field observations and larval head-width measuring, the author demonstrated that L. hirta would reproduce in a very short interval in June to August; eggs hatch and develop (molt) into the 3rd, 4th or 5th (sometimes 6th) instar before winter; after larval overwintering, the beetles complete the larval development after total 8–10 times of molts and pupate in June. The larval development rate is decreased but not completely stopped during winter (the nonparametric median test, P<0. 01). Environmental variables and macroinvertebrate communities are studied in two sites of the Lower Rhône River, the main channel and a lateral, occasionally connected dike field. Environmental variables and faunistic communities allow discrimination the two compartments. The environmental and faunistic differences the two sites change over time. The physical and chemical differences are significantly correlated with water discharge of the main channel. The faunistic ones are significantly correlated with the temperature of the dike field water. A cladistic analysis of the lower Hymenoptera, including all the ‘symphytan’ families and the apocritan families Stephanidae, Megalyridae, Trigonalyidae, Ibaliidae, Vespidae and Gasteruptiidae, has been undertaken. A total of 98 characters were scored for 21 taxa. Twenty equally parsimonious minimum-length trees were obtained. The phylogenetic status of the Xyelidae is uncertain: they might be monophyletic. or the Xyelinae might be the sistergroup of the rest of the Hymenoptera. The non-xyelid Hymenoptera are probably monophyletic; the phylogeny Tenthredinoidea + (Megalodontoidea + (Cephidae + (Anaxyelidea + (Siricidae + (Xiphydriidae + (Orussidae + Apocrita)))))) is proposed for this clade. The Blasticotomidae are probably the sistergroup of all othe Tenthredinoidea, but tenthredinoid phylogeny is otherwise uncertain. Substantial homoplasy occurs within the ‘siricoid’ families, making the relative positions of the Anaxyelidae and Siricidae uncertain. The Stephanidae might be the sistergroup of the rest of the Apocrita; the phylogeny of the remaining apocritan taxa included is insufficiently elucidated. The phylogeny proposed here supports the hypothesis that the appearance of parasitism in the Hymenoptera took place in the common ancestor of Orussidae + Apocrita, the host of which was probably wood boring insect larvae. The exact larval mode of feeding of the ancestral hymenopteran cannot be determined due ot the diversity of lifestyles in the basal lineages of the order. 相似文献

The mass production of juvenile seeds of the sea cucumber,Stichopus japonicus has recently developed by the SeaFarming Center of Saga Prefecture. Methods for the culture ofperiphicic diatoms have been improved. There are three importantsteps in propagating the diatoms. The first step is theenrichment, with the addition of the nutrient salts, undercontrolled light intensity. The second step is washing withhigh pressure seawater and reversal of the plates. The laststep is elimination of copepods, which feed on diatoms, usinga pesticide. Small periphitic diatoms such as Navicula,Amphora, Achnanthes, and Nitzschia are easily culturedat a density of more than one million cells cm–2, andthese diatoms are able to induce larval metamorphosis andserve as a food source for juvenile sea cucumbers. 相似文献

Taenia taeniaeformis: characterization of larval metabolic products and growth of host gastric cells in vitro 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Development of larvae of the cestode parasite Taenia taeniaeformis in the liver of rats induces gross hyperplasia of the gastric mucosa and excessive mucus production in the stomach without any direct contact with the stomach. Because the taeniid larvae are known to elaborate excretory-secretory (E-S) product in vivo and in vitro, the product was analyzed further, and its effects on cultured rat and dog stomach cells were investigated. In vitro E-S product contained less negatively charged glycosaminoglycan than either heparin or chondroitin sulfate, and proteins of various molecular weights. It stimulated the growth of both rat and dog stomach cells at concentrations of 3-9 micrograms protein/ml culture medium. At a concentration of 30 micrograms protein/ml culture medium, it stimulated hexosamine production in the cells up to 20 times, and multiple intracytoplasmic granules were found in both rat and dog cultured cells by light and electron microscopy. These results suggest that larval E-S product may be involved in the induction of gastric hyperplasia and hypermucus secretion. 相似文献

The larval midgut of the silkmoth Hyalophora cecropia was examined using scanning electron microscopy. Goblet cells were observed to contain within their cavities a matrix plug. This matrix material was extruded onto the lumen side of the epithelium when the tissue was stretched.
