Evolutionary biologists typically assume that the number of eggs fertilized or developing embryos produced is correlated with an individual's fitness. Using microsatellite markers, we document for the first time estimates of realized fitness quantified as the number of offspring surviving to adulthood in an insect under field conditions. In a territorial damselfly whose males defend tree hole oviposition sites, patterns of offspring survivorship could not be anticipated by adults. Fewer than half of the parents contributing eggs to a larval habitat realized any reproductive success from their investment. The best fitness correlate was the span over which eggs in a clutch hatched. Among parents, female fecundity and male fertilization success were poor predictors of realized fitness. Although body size was correlated with female clutch size and male mating success, larger parents did not realize greater fitness than smaller ones. The uncoupling of traditional fitness surrogates from realized fitness provides strong empirical evidence that selection at the larval stage constrains selection on mated adults. 相似文献

1972. Toxocara canis: Some characteristics of larval precipitating antibodies in rat serum. International Journal for Parasitology 2: 471–479. Serum from rats infected with 1000 T. canis eggs had larval precipitating antibodies present at least between 21 and 183 days post infection. The precipitating antibodies in whole serum were stable to heating at 60°C for 1 h and excretory pore precipitates developed in serum treated with 2-mercaptoethanol.
Fractionation of serum on G-200 and DEAE-cellulose and analysis of the fractions by immunoelectrophoresis indicated the fraction containing fast 7S globulin was primarily responsible for precipitating activity. Purified precipitating antibodies were stable to heating at 70°C for 15 min.
No skin fixing antibodies were detected in immune sera employing both a homologous and heterologous PCA text. 相似文献

The role of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE, peptidyl dipeptidase A) in metamorphic- and reproductive-related events in the Egyptian cotton leafworm, Spodoptera littoralis (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae) was studied by using the selective ACE inhibitor captopril. Although oral administration of captopril had no effect on larval growth, topical administration to new pupae resulted in a large decrease of successful adult formation. Oviposition and overall appearance of adults emerging from treated larvae did not differ significantly from those emerging from non-treated larvae. In contrast, topical or oral administration of captopril to newly emerged adults caused a reduction in oviposition. By evaluating the effect of captopril on ecdysteroid titers and trypsin activity, we revealed an additional physiological role for ACE. Captopril exerted an inhibitory effect on ecdysteroid levels in female but not in male adults. Larvae fed a diet containing captopril exhibited increased trypsin activity. A similar captopril-induced increase in trypsin activity was observed in female adults. In male adults, however, captopril elicited reduced levels of trypsin activity. Our results suggest that captopril downregulates oviposition by two independent pathways, one through ecdysteroid biosynthesis regulation, and the other through regulation of trypsin activity. Apparently, fecundity is influenced by a complex interaction of ACE, trypsin activity, and ecdysteroid levels. 相似文献

The effects of larval nutrition and parental size on offspring horn (male) and body size (male and female) were examined in the Japanese horned beetle Allomyrina dichotoma L. (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae). Offspring-parent regressions for both horn size and body size of males show no heritable effect, and the magnitudes of these traits were primarily determined by the larval nutritional condition. Male Allomyrina dichotoma also displayed dimorphic horn size-body size allometry, that is, larger males had longer horns relative to their body size and vice versa. Because it has been suggested that males of different body sizes adopt different reproductive tactics, the dimorphic horn size–body size allometry and male reproductive tactics are also a result of the larval environment. Similarly, female body size was determined by larval nutrition, and, thus, larval condition might influence future female fecundity. Females under low nutrition treatment spent longer duration of the third larval instar than females under high nutrition. Females under poor nutrition treatment probably attempted to be as large as possible by the extent of larval duration. Since horn and/or body sizes of males and females affect their fitness, this suggests the evolution of female choice for better oviposition site. 相似文献

Morphological variation among larval body plans must be placed into a phylogenetic and ecological context to assess whether similar morphologies are the result of phylogenetic constraints or convergent selective pressures. Investigations are needed of the diverse larval forms within the Lophotrochozoa, especially the larvae of phoronids and brachiopods. The actinotroch larva of Phoronis pallida (Phoronida) was reared in the laboratory to metamorphic competence. Larval development and growth were followed with video microscopy, SEM, and confocal microscopy. Early developmental features were similar to other phoronid species. Gastrulation was accomplished by embolic invagination of the vegetal hemisphere. Mesenchymal cells were found in the remaining blastocoelic space after invagination began. Mesenchymal cells formed the body wall musculature during the differentiation of larval features. Body wall musculature served as the framework from which all other larval muscles proliferated. Larval growth correlated best with developmental stage rather than age. Consistent with other phoronid species, differentiation of juvenile tissues occurred most rapidly at the latest stages of larval development. The minimum precompetency period of P. pallida was estimated to be approximately 4-6 weeks. Previously published studies have documented that the planktonic embryos of P. pallida develop faster than the brooded embryos of P. vancouverensis. However, these data showed that the difference in developmental rate between the two species decreased in succeeding larval stages. There may be convergent selective pressures that result in similar timing to metamorphic competence among phoronid and brachiopod planktotrophic larval types. Morphological differences between these larval types result from heterochronic developmental shifts in the differentiation of juvenile tissue. Similarities in the larval morphology of phoronids and basal deuterostomes are likely the result of functional and developmental constraints rather than a shared (recent) evolutionary origin. These constraints are imposed by the functional design of embryological stages, feeding structures, and swimming structures. 相似文献

The relative contributions of ancestry, chance, and past and ongoing election to variation in one adaptive (larval feeding
rate) and one seemingly nonadaptive (pupation height) trait were determined in populations ofDrosophila melanogaster adapting to either low or high larval densities in the laboratory. Larval feeding rates increased rapidly in response to
high density, and the effects of ancestry, past selection and chance were ameliorated by ongoing selection within 15–20 generations.
Similarly, in populations previously kept at high larval density, and then switched to low larval density, the decline of
larval feeding rate to ancestral levels was rapid (15-20 generations) and complete, providing support for a previously stated
hypothesis regarding the costs of faster feeding inDrosophila larvae. Variation among individuals was the major contributor to variation in pupation height, a trait that would superficially
appear to be nonadaptive in the environmental context of the populations used in this study because it did not diverge between
sets of populations kept at low versus high larval density for many generations. However, the degree of divergence among populations
(FST) for pupation height was significantly less than expected for a selectively neutral trait, and we integrate results from
previous studies to suggest that the variation for pupation height among populations is constrained by stabilizing selection,
with a flat, plateau-like fitness function that, consequently, allows for substantial phenotypic variation within populations.
Our results support the view that the genetic imprints of history (ancestry and past selection) in outbreeding sexual populations
are typically likely to be transient in the face of ongoing selection and recombination. The results also illustrate the heuristic
point that different forms of selection-for example directional versus stabilizing selection—acting on a trait in different
populations may often not be due to differently shaped fitness functions, but rather due to differences in how the fitness
function maps onto the actual distribution of phenotypes in a given population. We discuss these results in the light of previous
work on reverse evolution, and the role of ancestry, chance, and past and ongoing selection in adaptive evolution. 相似文献

Results from previous studies using an inbred strain of Xenopus laevis have led to the proposition that metamorphosis includes the events by which the newly differentiating adult immune system, including T lymphocytes, recognizes and eliminates larval skin cells as 'non-self'. More recently, a larval antigen targeted by adult T cells was identified as a 59 kDa protein with a specific peptide sequence. Using antisera directed against the larval antigen and the peptide, immunohistochemistry and western blotting were done to examine expression of the 59 kDa larval antigen in the skin during larval and metamorphic periods. There was no expression before Nieuwkoop and Faber stage 53. Expression was first seen at the beginning of metamorphic stage 54, when hind limbs appear, and increased thereafter, in apical and skein cells of both trunk and tail regions. In the trunk region, expression started to decrease at stage 58, until it completely disappeared at stage 62 (metamorphic climax). In the tail skin, however, expression persisted throughout the metamorphic stages. Treatment of larvae with thyroid hormone (TH) resulted in repression of expression of the 59 kDa molecule in a dose-dependent manner. Downregulation occurred earlier in the trunk than in the tail skin. These results suggest involvement in metamorphic events of an immunological mechanism: differential expression of the larval antigen in the trunk and tail skin cells due to their differing concentration of TH results in the tail, but not the trunk skin, being selectively attacked by the newly differentiating adult-type immune system. 相似文献

Behavioral adaptations increase the value of enemy-free space for Heliothis subflexa,a specialist herbivore 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We investigated the importance of specialized behaviors in the use of enemy-free space by comparing the host-use behavior of two closely related moths, Heliothis subflexa Guenee and H. virescens Fabricius. Heliothis subflexa is a specialist on plants in the genus Physalis, whereas H. virescens is an extreme generalist, feeding on plants in at least 14 families. Heliothis subflexa uses the inflated calyx surrounding Physalis fruits as enemy-free space, and field rates of parasitism for H. subflexa on Physalis are much lower than for H. virescens on tobacco and cotton, common hosts found in the same habitat as Physalis. If Physalis, architecture were solely responsible for H. subflexa's low rates of parasitism on Physalis, we predicted that H. virescens larvae experimentally induced to feed on Physalis would experience parasitism rates similar to those of H. subflexa. We found, however, that specialized host-use and host-acceptance behaviors are integral to the use of enemy-free space on Physalis and strongly augment the effects of the structural refuge. In laboratory assays, we found considerable differences between the larval behavior of the specialist. H. subflexa, and the generalist, H. virescens, and these contributed to H. subflexa's superior use of enemy-free space on Physalis. We tested the importance of these behavioral differences in the field by comparing parasitism of H. virescens on Physalis, H. virescens on tobacco, and H. subflexa on Physalis by Cardiochiles nigriceps Vierick, a specialist braconid parasitoid. For H. virescens, a threefold decrease in parasitism occurred when feeding on Physalis (mean parasitism +/- SEM = 13 +/- 4%) rather than tobacco (43 +/- 4%), a difference we attribute to the structural refuge provided by Physalis. However, parasitism of H. virescens on Physalis was more than ten times as great as that of H. subflexa on Pliv.salis (1 +/- 4%), supporting the hypothesis that specialized behaviors have a substantial impact on use of Physalis as enemy-free space. Behavioral adaptations may be central to the use of enemy-free space by phytophagous insects and may act as an important selective force in the evolution of dietary specialization. 相似文献

Some features of three-host exophilic ticks important for their survival differ at the generic level in relation to the types
of their habitat. Ixodes and Haemaphysalis are typical forest genera, Hyalomma is an open country genus, whereas Dermacentor and Rhipicephalus, having some features of forest ticks, are closer to the ticks of open country. Forest ticks encounter rather stable and
favorable temperature, humidity and illumination conditions as compared with open country ticks. A few differences determining
every-day survival, host-seeking, and reproduction of ticks are considered. (1) Tolerance to desiccation is very low in forest
ticks and much greater in ticks of open country. (2) Lack of eyes in forest ticks (having, however, epithelial photoreceptor
cells) and formation of eyes as special morphological structures in ticks of open country. (3) Capability of mating and insemination
of unfed specimens both on and off hosts in forest ticks (Ixodes) and insemination of partially engorged females only on hosts by fed males in open country ticks. (4) Reciprocal sexual dimorphism
where in forest ticks females have a larger body than males and in open country ticks this correlation is opposite. (5) Linear
dependence between female weight and number of eggs laid is established in forest ticks after the female weight becomes higher
than 50% of mean engorgement weight whereas in open country ticks linear dependence begins to reveal itself much earlier.
(6) In forest ticks the compensatory growth occurs only during adult feeding whereas in open country ticks such a growth occurs
both during nymphal and adult feeding. The adaptive nature of the above differences and their evolutionary trends have been
hypothesized.
