Behavioral adaptations increase the value of enemy-free space for Heliothis subflexa,a specialist herbivore 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We investigated the importance of specialized behaviors in the use of enemy-free space by comparing the host-use behavior of two closely related moths, Heliothis subflexa Guenee and H. virescens Fabricius. Heliothis subflexa is a specialist on plants in the genus Physalis, whereas H. virescens is an extreme generalist, feeding on plants in at least 14 families. Heliothis subflexa uses the inflated calyx surrounding Physalis fruits as enemy-free space, and field rates of parasitism for H. subflexa on Physalis are much lower than for H. virescens on tobacco and cotton, common hosts found in the same habitat as Physalis. If Physalis, architecture were solely responsible for H. subflexa's low rates of parasitism on Physalis, we predicted that H. virescens larvae experimentally induced to feed on Physalis would experience parasitism rates similar to those of H. subflexa. We found, however, that specialized host-use and host-acceptance behaviors are integral to the use of enemy-free space on Physalis and strongly augment the effects of the structural refuge. In laboratory assays, we found considerable differences between the larval behavior of the specialist. H. subflexa, and the generalist, H. virescens, and these contributed to H. subflexa's superior use of enemy-free space on Physalis. We tested the importance of these behavioral differences in the field by comparing parasitism of H. virescens on Physalis, H. virescens on tobacco, and H. subflexa on Physalis by Cardiochiles nigriceps Vierick, a specialist braconid parasitoid. For H. virescens, a threefold decrease in parasitism occurred when feeding on Physalis (mean parasitism +/- SEM = 13 +/- 4%) rather than tobacco (43 +/- 4%), a difference we attribute to the structural refuge provided by Physalis. However, parasitism of H. virescens on Physalis was more than ten times as great as that of H. subflexa on Pliv.salis (1 +/- 4%), supporting the hypothesis that specialized behaviors have a substantial impact on use of Physalis as enemy-free space. Behavioral adaptations may be central to the use of enemy-free space by phytophagous insects and may act as an important selective force in the evolution of dietary specialization. 相似文献

不同覆膜方式对旱砂田土壤水热效应

早春低温胁迫和生育期干旱胁迫是进一步提高旱砂田西瓜产量的主要限制因素。为提高旱砂田早春土壤温度和自然降水利用效率,在西北干旱区的旱砂田上开展了不同覆膜方式的对比试验,研究了全覆膜(FM)、起垄覆膜(RM)、半覆膜(HM)和不覆膜(CK)4个处理下旱砂田土壤水热效应及对西瓜产量和品质的影响。结果表明,不同覆膜方式0-25cm土壤温度日变化均以"S"的温波形式由表层向深层土壤传递,土层每加深5cm,土壤温波位相依次推移1h;不同覆膜方式0-25cm土层增温效应表现为FM>RM>HM>CK,日平均温度较CK分别提高2.8、2.0,1.8℃。FM和RM是影响旱砂田西瓜生长前期土壤水分变化的主要覆膜方式,播种至幼苗期,RM具有明显的集雨效果,抽蔓期FM具有显著的保墒效果。覆膜加快了旱砂田西瓜的生长,蔓长、叶绿素含量和叶面积指数均明显高于CK, FM、RM和HM产量分别较CK增加145.81%、99.32%和95.46%,西瓜可溶性固形物含量和可溶性糖含量均表现为FM>RM>HM>CK,而维生素C、粗纤维和有效酸含量受覆膜方式的影响较小。综合分析,FM和RM是旱砂田西瓜生产中优选的覆膜方式。 相似文献

External phosphorus load to a wetland with two shallow lakes in the Botshol Nature Reserve, The Netherlands, was reduced,
resulting in a rapid reduction of phytoplankton biomass and turbidity, and after 4 years, explosive growth of Characeae. The
clear water state was unstable, however, and the ecosystem then alternated between clear, high-vegetation and turbid, low-vegetation
states. A model of water quality processes was used in conjunction with a 14-year nutrient budget for Botshol to determine
if fluctuations in precipitation and nutrient load caused the ecosystem instability. The results indicate that, during wet
winters when groundwater level rose above surface water level, phosphorus from runoff was stored in the lake bottom and banks.
Stored phosphorus was released the following spring and summer under anaerobic sediment conditions, resulting in increased
phytoplankton density and light attenuation in the water column. During years with high net precipitation, flow from land
to surface water also transported humic acids, further increasing light attenuation. In years with dry winters, the phosphorus
and humic acid loads to surface water were reduced, and growth of submerged macrophytes was enhanced by clear water. Thus,
the temporal pattern of precipitation and flow from land to water gave a coherent, quantitative explanation of the observed
dynamics in phosphorus, phytoplankton, turbidity, and Characeae. Global warming has caused winters in The Netherlands to become
warmer and wetter during the last 50 years, increasing flow from land to water of humic acids and phosphorus and, ultimately,
enhancing instability of Characeae populations. In the first half of the 20th century interannual variation in precipitation
was not sufficient to cause large changes in internal P flux in Botshol, and submerged macrophyte populations were stable. 相似文献

With representation of the global carbon cycle becoming increasingly complex in climate models, it is important to develop ways to quantitatively evaluate model performance against in situ and remote sensing observations. Here we present a systematic framework, the Carbon‐LAnd Model Intercomparison Project (C‐LAMP), for assessing terrestrial biogeochemistry models coupled to climate models using observations that span a wide range of temporal and spatial scales. As an example of the value of such comparisons, we used this framework to evaluate two biogeochemistry models that are integrated within the Community Climate System Model (CCSM) – Carnegie‐Ames‐Stanford Approach′ (CASA′) and carbon–nitrogen (CN). Both models underestimated the magnitude of net carbon uptake during the growing season in temperate and boreal forest ecosystems, based on comparison with atmospheric CO2 measurements and eddy covariance measurements of net ecosystem exchange. Comparison with MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) measurements show that this low bias in model fluxes was caused, at least in part, by 1–3 month delays in the timing of maximum leaf area. In the tropics, the models overestimated carbon storage in woody biomass based on comparison with datasets from the Amazon. Reducing this model bias will probably weaken the sensitivity of terrestrial carbon fluxes to both atmospheric CO2 and climate. Global carbon sinks during the 1990s differed by a factor of two (2.4 Pg C yr?1 for CASA′ vs. 1.2 Pg C yr?1 for CN), with fluxes from both models compatible with the atmospheric budget given uncertainties in other terms. The models captured some of the timing of interannual global terrestrial carbon exchange during 1988–2004 based on comparison with atmospheric inversion results from TRANSCOM (r=0.66 for CASA′ and r=0.73 for CN). Adding (CASA′) or improving (CN) the representation of deforestation fires may further increase agreement with the atmospheric record. Information from C‐LAMP has enhanced model performance within CCSM and serves as a benchmark for future development. We propose that an open source, community‐wide platform for model‐data intercomparison is needed to speed model development and to strengthen ties between modeling and measurement communities. Important next steps include the design and analysis of land use change simulations (in both uncoupled and coupled modes), and the entrainment of additional ecological and earth system observations. Many areas in Europe are dominated by agricultural land use, and as a consequence, many typical forest plant species suffer
from habitat loss and fragmentation. Hedgerows, one of the common elements of rural landscapes, have been considered as potential
refuges for these species. The main objective of this study was to examine whether forests and hedgerows differ in environmental
conditions, and whether important life-history attributes of the populations differ between the two habitat types. We selected
five species commonly found in the region in both forests and hedgerows (Adoxa moschatellina, Anemone nemorosa, Circaea lutetiana, Polygonatum multiflorum and Stellaria holostea), and sampled data on 10 populations of each species in each habitat type, including measurements of light and various soil
factors. Hedgerows had higher relative light availability and tended to have higher soil nutrient contents and lower soil
water values than forests. The comparison of plant performance values between habitat types did not show consistent patterns
across species. Anemone and Polygonatum performed equally well in hedgerows and forests, whereas Stellaria appeared to have a higher fitness in hedgerows. In contrast, Circaea showed a higher reproduction under forest conditions. For Adoxa, the results were somewhat contradictory: whereas the reproductive output of this species was higher in forests, population
density was higher in hedgerows. The abiotic factors most closely related to the performance values were relative light and
soil water availability. The majority of plant performance values did not differ between hedgerows and forests. We therefore
conclude that the tested forest species are capable of growing also in hedgerows and will survive equally well in forest and

Olfactory studies are truly multidisciplinary, from anthropology to zoology. What literary criticism can offer is analysis of the language of smell and the discourses of olfactory practice which give smell meanings. In this paper I explore the poetics of odour in selected contexts in the developed West of the twenty-first century. I argue that the language of smell is elusive, contradictory, disguised: nonetheless, it deploys metaphor, story, personal meaning and social meaning, all frames that ‘nest’ together. I demonstrate contradictions of olfactory practice with reference to urban space and technologies of scent, acting on bodies and places. I argue that a relationship between scent, identity and space can be understood in terms of an olfactory sublime, to which there is also resistance, sanctioned by new laws. In public space, the complexity of deodorisation appears in the conflict between fragrance-free and compulsory olfaction, as I argue with reference to Halifax, Nova Scotia and to the London Underground. 相似文献

On a continental scale a river system itself is an ecotone, mediating between the terrestrial system and the sea. On the landscape scale, ecotones appear between terrestrial and river systems. At decreasing scales, the number and diversity of ecotones increases. Ecotone processes are discussed in relation to the entire river ecosystem, on scales ranging from the activity range of fish fry up to that of adult fish.The introduction of patch theory into the River Continuum Concept (RCC) allows for the proper consideration of hydraulics and time. The relationships between stream order and patch distribution, patch size and lifetime and age diversity of patches are described.
