Antioxidant defence is one of the important biological adaptations to thermal stress in animals. Micronutrients play crucial roles in the bioactivity of several antioxidant systems. Shelter management by providing a thermo-comfort micro-environment to animals may also combat the heat stress during summer. Hence, the aim of the present study was to assess the biological ability of Malpura lambs to counter thermal stress following supplementation of micronutrients and providing shelter in a temperature-controlled climatic chamber during the hot day-hours in summer. Twenty-one lambs of 3 - 5 months age were equally divided in to three group viz. Group1: control, Group2: micronutrient- supplemented and Group3: housing in thermo-neutral climatic chamber. Lambs in group1 and 2 were maintained in a shed having free access to hot wind while the lambs in group 3 were kept inside a climatic chamber (temperature and relative humidity about 30 °C and 40%, respectively) between 10 am to 4:30 pm. All the lambs were provided identical diet consisting of 2.5 kg concentrate and ad libitum quantities of Cenchrus ciliaris hay and clean water. Group3 lambs were additionally supplemented with 0.150 g micronutrient pellet per animal per day for a period of 30 days. Blood samples were collected at 0, 15, 30 days and plasma antioxidants activity were estimated. The catalase activity in the micronutrient-pellet supplemented group was significantly (p < 0.05) higher than the control both at day15 and day30. The superoxide dismutase activity was increased significantly (p < 0.05) at day30 than the day0 in both the micronutrient-supplemented and climatic chamber groups. In conclusion, both the micronutrient supplementation and housing in a thermo-comfort environment enhance the antioxidant defence and biological adaptation in lambs during thermal stress in summer.  相似文献

To examine the involvement of supraspinal inputs in the maturation of motor activity patterns in the developing fetal lamb, we recorded spontaneous electromyographic activity from spinally innervated muscles at approximately 45, 65, and 95 days gestation (G45, G65, and G95; term = 147 days). At G45, fetal activity occurred in synchronized activity-inactivity cycles of approximately 2 min duration, with the activity phase lasting 22.2 ± 4.8 s and the inactivity phase lasting 95.4 ± 13.3 s (mean ± standard error of the mean, n = 5). At G65 and G95, the organization of activity was clearly different from that at G45 in that it was no longer cyclic, nor was the discharge of different muscles synchronized. By contrast, after spinal cord transection at G62, synchronised cyclic activity occurred in muscles innervated by segmental levels below the transection, both at G65 and G95. At G65 the duration of the activity phase of the cycle was 53.5 ± 6.0 s, while the inactivity phase lasted 171.6 ± 22.1 s; these durations did not alter between G65 and G95. Since spinal cord transection leads to the motor behavior of the G65 fetus reverting to the cyclic pattern characteristic of the G45 fetus, we conclude that supraspinal inputs begin to modulate the output of the spinal pattern generators at some stage between G45 and G65. The observation that spinally transected fetuses generate identical behavior at G65 and G95, both in terms of its cyclic character and the duration of cycles, suggests that spinal circuits undergo little autonomous development overthis period; that is, the altered behavior observed in the developing intact fetus reflects the influence of supra-spinal inputs on the motor circuits of the spinal cord. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Polymorphisms in the growth hormone (GH) and IGF type-1 (IGF1) genes have been associated with the economic traits in farm animals, including BW of some sheep breeds. However, it remains unknown if these polymorphisms also affect carcass traits in sheep. Thus, we aimed to identify polymorphisms in the GH and IGF1 genes in Santa Ines sheep in order to describe their allelic and genotypic frequencies as well as to test the hypotheses that they are associated with the carcass traits. Fragments of 4550 bp (IGF1) and 1194 bp (GH) were sequenced in up to 191 lambs. In all, 18 polymorphisms were identified in the IGF1 and 21 in the GH gene. The IGF1 polymorphisms rs430457475, rs412470350, rs409110739 and rs400113576 showed an additive effect on the internal carcass length (−0.9265±0.4223), rump girth (−2.9285±1.1473), rib yield (−1.0003±0.4588) and neck weight (−0.0567±0.0278), respectively. In addition, the polymorphisms rs58957314 in the GH affected the rib weight (−0.4380±0.1272) and rib yield (−2.2680±0.6970), loin weight (−0.1893±0.0516) and loin yield (−0.9423±0.3259), palette weight (−0.2265±0.0779) and palette yield (−0.9424±0.4184), leg weight (−0.3960±0.1375), neck weight (−0.0851±0.0394) and carcass finishing score (−0.1700±0.0839). These results allow us to conclude that there are polymorphisms in the IGF1 and GH genes associated with carcass traits in Santa Ines sheep, which can provide important information for marker-assisted selection.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of increasing levels of saponins from Quillaja saponaria on fatty acid (FA) composition and cholesterol content in muscle Longissimus dorsi of lambs. A total of 24 Barbarine lambs were assigned to four dietary treatments: control diet (C) consisting of oat hay ad libitum and 400 g of concentrate (80% barley, 17.5% soybean meal and 2.5% vitamin and mineral supplement); C diet plus 30 ppm of Q. saponaria L. (QS30); C diet plus 60 ppm of Quillaja (QS60); C diet plus 90 ppm of Quillaja (QS90). Saponin supplementation reduced the concentration of C14:1 cis-9 (P = 0.001) and of its desaturation index (P = 0.002). None of the FA intermediates of ruminal biohydrogenation (BH) was affected by Quillaja saponin supplementation (P > 0.05). The concentration of C20:4n-6 was higher in the meat of animals receiving 60 ppm of Quillaja than C and QS30 groups. Supplementing 60 ppm of Quillaja reduced the ratio between α-linolenic and linoleic acids compared with the C group (P = 0.023). We did not find any significant effect of Quillaja saponins on muscle cholesterol level. Further investigations are necessary to assess the metabolic fate of saponins in the rumen and to understand whether there is an effect of saponin on Δ9-desaturase enzyme activity, ruminal BH and cholesterol metabolism in ruminants. Supplementing up to 90 ppm of Quillaja saponins did not produce detrimental effects on the overall meat FA profile.  相似文献

The 'Organic' product label guarantees a production process that avoids the use of synthetic fertilisers, pesticides and hormones and minimises recourse to pharmaceuticals or veterinary drugs; however, the product's quality remains an issue that needs to be addressed in response to consumer demand. Consequently, this study was conducted to compare the sensory and nutritional qualities of meat and carcasses from pasture-fed lambs reared organically (O) or conventionally (C). Mean lamb growth profile was kept similar between the two treatments to avoid confounding effects with lamb age or weight at slaughter. The experiment was conducted over 3 years (2005 to 2007) with 12 O and 12 C lambs each year. The O and C treatments differed in the level of on-pasture mineral N fertilisation inducing a higher proportion of white clover in the organic pasture than the conventional pasture. Lambs were slaughtered when they attained a fat class of 2 to 3, and carcass and meat quality were evaluated. Lambs were slaughtered at an average weight and age of 35.3 kg and 156 days in the O treatment, respectively, and 35.2 kg and 155 days in the C treatment, respectively. Sensory evaluation indicated that loin chops from the O treatment had a higher level of abnormal fat odour compared with the C treatment. Carcasses from the O treatment had a softer subcutaneous fat one among 3 years (2007) compared to the C treatment. These results are probably due to a higher proportion of white clover in the diet. Organically reared lambs did offer the slight advantage of muscle fatty acid containing a higher level of stearic acid, which may have positive effects in the prevention of cardiovascular disease in humans. This may be the result of a higher rumen bio-hydrogenation of C18:3n-3 due to differences in the botanical composition between the O and the C pasture. Production system had no effect on the colour characteristics of the meat and subcutaneous fat, except lightness of subcutaneous dorsal fat, which was slightly higher in the O lambs. There were no differences between O and C lambs in terms of colour stability and lipid oxidation of the meat during the 6-day refrigerated storage under gas-permeable film.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of the inclusion of stoned olive cake and rolled linseed in a concentrate-based diet for lambs on the fatty-acid composition of polar and non-polar intramuscular lipids of the longissimus dorsi muscle. To achieve this objective, 32 Appenninica lambs were randomly distributed into four groups of eight lambs each and were fed conventional cereal-based concentrates (diet C); concentrates containing 20% on a dry matter (DM) basis of rolled linseed (diet L); concentrates containing 35% DM of stoned olive cake (diet OC); and concentrates containing both rolled linseed (10% DM) and stoned olive cake (17% DM; diet OCL). The concentrates were administered together with grass hay at a 20:80 forage:concentrate ratio. Growing performances and carcass traits were evaluated. The fatty-acid composition was analysed in the total intramuscular lipids, as well as in the polar and neutral lipids. The average feed intake and the growth performance of lambs were not affected by the dietary treatments, as a consequence of similar nutritional characteristics of the diets. The inclusion of rolled linseed in the L and OCL diets increased the content of C18:3 n-3 in intramuscular total lipids, which was threefold higher in meat from the L lambs and more than twofold higher in meat from the OCL lambs compared with the C and OC treatments. The n-6:n-3 ratio significantly decreased in the meat from lambs in the L and OCL groups, reaching values below 3. The L treatment resulted in the highest level of trans-18:1 fatty acids in the muscle. Regardless of the dietary treatment, the t10-18:1 was the major isomer, representing 55%, 45%, 49% and 45% of total trans-18:1 for C, L, OC and OCL treatments, respectively. Neutral lipids from the OC-fed lambs contained the highest amount of c9-18:1 (more than 36% of total fatty acids); however, the content of c9-18:1 did not differ between the OC and C lambs, suggesting an intensive biohydrogenation of dietary c9-18:1 in the case of OC treatment. The highest content of c9,t11-18:2 was detected in the intramuscular fat from the L-fed lambs, followed by the OCL treatment. A similar trend was observed in the neutral lipid fraction and, to a lower extent, in the polar lipids.  相似文献

In this study, six biomechanical models for simulating lamb liver behaviour are presented. They are validated using similarity coefficients from Medical Image on reconstructed volumes from computerised tomography images. In particular, the Jaccard and Hausdorff coefficients are used. Loads of 20 and 40 g are applied to the livers and their deformation is simulated by means of the finite element method. The models used are a linear elastic model, a neo-Hookean model, a Mooney–Rivlin model, an Ogden model, a linear viscoelastic model and a viscohyperelastic model. The model that provided a behaviour that is closest to reality was the viscohyperelastic model, where the hyperelastic part was modelled with an Ogden model.  相似文献

There is a wide range of feed additives deliberately designed to be used in sheep diets that can improve production performance. Whereas herbal supplementation is gaining popularity not only for improving sheep productivity and mutton quality but also for safe application without any harmful residual effects. The present study was designed to investigate the effect of plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.) and/or garlic leaf (Allium sativum) dietary supplementation on growth performance, immunity, rumen histology, serum antioxidants and meat quality of sheep. The experiment consisted of a completely randomized design with 32 one-year-old sheep (initial mean live weight 9 ± 0.2 kg) allocated to four groups (8 sheep per group). Rice straw and concentrates-based total mixed ration pellets (2390 kcal/kg DM, CP = 15.1%) were offered as a control diet (CL diet). Herbal treatment diets included (i) CL diet + 10 g DM of plantain herb (PL diet), (ii) CL diet + 10 g DM of garlic leaf (GL diet) and (iii) CL diet + 5 g DM of PL and 5 g DM of GL (PG diet). Compared with the CL diet group, the live weight gain and feed conversion ratio were 18% to 26% and 13% to 20% higher in herbal-supplemented groups, respectively. Moreover, the herbal-supplemented groups, especially the PL diet group had higher serum immunoglobulin concentration, antioxidant capacity and rumen papillae size compared to the control. Besides, the lowest caul fat and pelvic fat levels were observed in the PL diet group followed by PG, GL and CL diet groups. In addition, lower mutton ether extract and saturated fatty acid along with higher polyunsaturated fatty acid levels were found in all herbal-supplemented groups. In conclusion, dietary supplementation with PL and/or GL might be used as an alternative in sheep to promote growth, health status and lean mutton production.  相似文献

The study involved 120 crossbred ewes (sixty 1.5 years old animals and sixty 2.5 years old animals; initial liveweight 67.6 kg, condition score 3.7), that were mated in October. They were assigned to six treatments (two shearing treatments (shorn and unshorn) × two silage feed values (low and medium) and two extended grazed herbage allowances (1.0 and 1.8 kg dry matter (DM)/day)) designed to evaluate the effects of shearing at housing, grass silage feed value and extended-grazed herbage allowance on their performance and the performance of their progeny. Swards, which had silage harvested on 6 September, received fertiliser N (34 kg/ha) for extended (deferred) grazing between 19 December and lambing in mid-March. The herbage was allocated at DM allowances of 1.0 or 1.8 kg/ewe daily until 1 February. For the final 6 weeks of pregnancy, daily herbage DM allowances were 1.5, 1.6, 2.0, 2.0 and 2.0 kg for weeks 6, 5, 4, 3 and 2 to parturition, respectively. Two grass silages (low and medium feed value) were offered from housing on 19 December to lambing in mid-March. At housing, half the ewes were shorn whilst the remainder remained unshorn. Each ewe received 23.4 kg concentrate prior to lambing. For the extended-grazed herbage and the low and medium feed-value silages, DM concentrations were 132, 225 and 265 g/kg, and metabolisable energy (ME) concentrations were 10.0, 10.0 and 10.7 MJ/kg DM, respectively. Treatment did not alter (P > 0.05) litter size or number reared. Grass silage feed value did not significantly alter silage DM intake, or ewe and subsequent lamb performance. Increasing herbage allowance in mid-pregnancy decreased herbage utilisation (P < 0.05) and increased herbage intake (P < 0.05). Shearing increased silage intake (P < 0.05), lamb birth weight (P < 0.01) and tended to increase lamb weaning weight (P = 0.07). Relative to the housed shorn ewes, extended grazing did not alter (P > 0.05) ewe or subsequent lamb performance. It is concluded that shearing ewes at housing increased lamb birth weight due to increased silage intake probably associated with cold stress immediately post shearing and reduced heat stress in late pregnancy. Based on differences in lamb weight at weaning 0.8 kg of grass silage DM intake had the same feed value as a daily extended herbage DM allowance of 1.8 kg per ewe throughout the study. Neither silage feed value nor herbage allowance in mid-pregnancy affected lamb birth weight or subsequent growth rate.  相似文献
