Seasonal changes of fish species composition in terms of biomass, density and number of species in three areas of the main channel of the Paranaguá Estuary (axis east–west) are described in relation to seasonal fluctuations in salinity, water temperature and dissolved oxygen in the main channel. Two hundred and thirty‐four samples were collected monthly, between July 2000 and June 2001, in the main channel. Seventy‐nine species of 29 families were captured with a total estimated mean density and biomass of 1513 individuals ha?1 and 34 kg ha?1, respectively. The number of species and total mean density differed significantly among areas and seasons, but the total mean biomass differed only significantly throughout the ecocline (areas) of the Paranaguá Estuary. For the most abundant species, the mean densities of Stellifer rastrifer, Aspistor luniscutis, Menticirrhus americanus, Sphoeroides testudineus, Cynoscion leiarchus and Symphurus tesselatus (with the exception of Cathorops spixii and Genidens genidens) differed significantly among seasons. The mean biomass of these species, with the exception of G. genidens, S. rastrifer, A. luniscutis and S. testudineus, also differed significantly for the factor seasons. Area was a significant factor for the eight most abundant species (density and biomass), except S. testudineus (density), G. genidens, C. leiarchus and S. tesselatus (biomass). The season v. area interaction term was significant for C. leiarchus (density). Most of these differences occurred during the rainy season when fishes concentrated principally in the middle of the estuary, where the salinity remained stable. It is suggested that the salinity stability in the middle of the estuary is the main reason why the most estuarine resident fish species move downstream and remain there, regardless of the increased freshwater runoff. Moreover, canonical correspondent analysis output detected that during the late rainy season, the variable dissolved oxygen (P < 0·01) was the most important environmental variable, responsible for structuring patterns of fishes assemblages in the west–east axis of Paranaguá Estuary. During the end of the dry season, both salinity (P < 0·01) and dissolved oxygen (P < 0·05) were responsible for this ecological feature in the estuary. Finally, it was possible to detect that juveniles and adults of some important species respond differently to seasonal fluctuations of the ecocline‐determining environmental factors. This behaviour is suggested as a strategy to avoid competition and predation during the rainy season in the middle estuary. The Paranaguá Estuary did not fit with the pre‐existing models described in the tropical and subtropical estuarine fish literature since its main channel fish assemblages remained within its bounds even during the rainy season. 相似文献

Gill-nets are highly selective in terms of the sizes of fish they catch, but often unselective in terms of the suite of fish species they capture. We investigated gill-net selectivity from the point of view of behavioural interactions between the fish and the gear. We observed interactions between fish and gill-nets of three mesh sizes (65 mm, 88 mm & 110 mm) set over rocky reefs in southern New Zealand. There were significant differences among eight species of mobile reef fish in their response to gill-nets and in their capture rates. Some species were more vulnerable because of their use of habitat, swimming motion or morphology. Species that occupied low visibility habitats (e.g., the herbivorous Odax pullus, which mostly swims beneath the algal canopy) were more susceptible to being caught because they had little time to detect and avoid the gill-nets. Species with carangiform or sub-carangiform swimming motion (e.g., Latridopsis ciliaris or O. pullus) were more susceptible to being caught because once in the gill-net, they could only attempt to force their way forwards becoming wedged further into the mesh. Species whose morphology makes tangling in the mesh more likely (e.g., large or protruding spines (Aplodactylus arctidens), fins (L. ciliaris) or opercula) are also more susceptible to being caught. Some species, particularly the common labrid Notolabrus celidotus, were less susceptible than other species to being caught. Fewer than 1% of 538 N. celidotus observed within one metre of the gill-nets were caught. Most N. celidotus altered their swimming direction near the gill-nets and did not hit the mesh. N. celidotus that swam through the nets were smaller than those that swam over the gill-nets or turned away. The fact that different size classes had different responses suggests that interactions with the gill-net are actively controlled. To divers, it appeared that this species could readily detect the gill-nets and treated them as part of the seascape. Furthermore, their labriform swimming motion allowed them to swim backwards out of gill-nets to avoid becoming caught. The species-specific responses of reef fish near the gill-nets and behavioural differences may explain the low numbers of some common reef fish that are caught in gill-nets and the disproportionately high numbers of others. The potentially great ancillary effects from by-catch of important species of untargeted reef fish, birds and marine mammals make gill-nets a somewhat blunderbuss method of catching fish on coastal reefs. 相似文献

The swimming behaviour of 534 coral reef fish larvae from 27 species was explored at Moorea Island (French Polynesia) while they searched for a suitable settlement habitat, on the first night of their lagoon life. Most larvae swam actively (74%) and avoided the bottom (77%). A significant relationship was highlighted between the vertical position of larvae in the water column and the distance they travelled from lagoon entrance to settlement habitat: larvae swimming close to the surface settled farther away on the reef than bottom-dwelling larvae. 相似文献

This study considered a model for species abundance dynamics in two local community (or islands) connected to a regional metacommunity. The model was analyzed using continuous probabilistic technique that employs Kolmogorov-Fokker-Planck forward equation to derive the probability density of the species abundance in the two local communities. Using this technique, we proposed a classification for the species abundance dynamics in the local communities. This classification was made based on such characteristics as immigration intensity, species representation in the metacommunity and the size of local communities. We further distinguished several different scenarios for species abundance dynamics using different ecological characteristics such as species persistence, extinction and monodominance in one or both local communities. The similarity of the species abundance distributions between the two local communities was studied using the correlation coefficient between species abundances in two local communities. The correlation is a function of migration rates between local communities and between local and metacommunity. Immigration between local communities drives the homogenization of the local communities, while immigration from the metacommunity will differentiate them. This community subdivision model provides useful insights for studying the effect of landscape fragmentation on species diversity. 相似文献

Microbial communities from the surface of ancient seeds of higher plants and embedding frozen material dated to the late Pleistocene (formed about 30 thousand years ago) were studied by various methods: scanning electron microscopy, epifluorescence microscopy, and inoculation of nutrient media, followed by identification of isolated cultures. Both prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms were found on the surface of ancient seeds. The total quantity of bacterial cells determined by direct counting and dilution plating (CFU) for the samples of ancient seeds exceeded the value in the embedding frozen material by one to two orders of magnitude. This pattern was not maintained for mycelial fungi; their quantity in the embedding material was also rather high. A significant difference was revealed between the microbial communities of ancient seeds and embedding frozen material. These findings suggest that ancient plant seeds are a particular ecological niche for microorganisms existing in permafrost and require individual detailed study. 相似文献

The present paper studies a minimal prey-predator model in the context of marine plankton interaction together with predation by planktivorous fish. The time lag required for gestation of the predator is incorporated and the resulting delayed model is analyzed for stability and bifurcation phenomena. A stochastic extension of the model is considered by perturbing the growth process of phytoplankton using colored noise process known to be more appropriate for the marine environment. The stochastic models with and without gestation delay are analyzed for stability aspects and a threshold value of gestation delay is obtained; this threshold is then compared with that of the deterministic model. 相似文献

Under a particular set of selective forces, specific combinations of traits (strategies) will be favored in a given population,
within the particular constraints of the considered species. For fishes, three demographic strategies have been suggested
to result from adaptive responses to environmental predictability (i.e., seasonality): periodic, opportunistic and equilibrium
[Winemiller KO, Rose KA (1992) Patterns of life-history diversification in North American fishes: implications for population
regulation. Can J Fish Aquat Sci 49:2196–2218]. These strategies optimize fitness within predictable, unpredictable and stable
systems, respectively. We tested these predictions of life history trait distribution along a gradient of hydrologic seasonality
in West African tropical rivers at the drainage basin scale. We used logistic regression of species presence–absence data
to test whether dominant life history traits of species caused community compositional change in response to a gradient of
seasonality in hydrologic regime across basins. After accounting for taxonomic relatedness, species body size and statistical
redundancy inherent to related traits, we found a higher proportion of species producing a great number of small oocytes,
reproducing within a short period of time and presenting a low degree of parental care (the periodic strategy) in highly seasonal
drainage basins (e.g., rivers with a short and predictable favorable season). Conversely, in more stable drainage basins (e.g.,
rivers with a wet season of several months), we observed a greater proportion of species producing small numbers of large
oocytes, reproducing within a long period of time and providing parental care to their offspring (the equilibrium strategy).
Our results suggest that distributions of tropical freshwater fishes at the drainage basin scale can be partly explained by
the match between life history strategies and seasonality gradients in hydrological conditions.

Contrasting ectomycorrhizal fungal communities on the roots of co-occurring oaks (Quercus spp.) in a California woodland 总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Plant host species is considered an important factor influencing ectomycorrhizal (EM) communities. To gain insights into the role of host species in structuring EM communities, EM communities on sympatric oak (Quercus) species were compared in the Sierra Nevada foothills of California. Using molecular methods (polymerase chain reaction, cloning, restriction fragment length polymorphism and DNA sequencing), EM fungi on roots of deciduous Quercus douglasii and evergreen Quercus wislizeni trees were identified from 64 soil cores. The total EM species richness was 140, of which 40 taxa were detected on both oak hosts. Greater diversity and frequency of EM fungi with epigeous fruiting habit were found on Q. wislizeni, while taxa in the Ascomycota were more frequent and diverse on Q. douglasii. Using ordination, it was determined that both soil extractable phosphorus and oak host species explained a significant proportion of the variation in EM species distribution. These results indicate that plant host species can be an important factor influencing EM fungal community composition, even within congeneric trees. 相似文献

AIMS: To investigate the difference between Lancefield group C Streptococcus dysgalactiae (GCSD) strains isolated from diseased fish and animals by sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of the sodA gene. METHODS AND RESULTS: The sodA gene of Strep. dysgalactiae strains isolated from fish and animals were amplified and its nucleotide sequences were determined. Although 100% sequence identity was observed among fish GCSD strains, the determined sequences from animal isolates showed variations against fish isolate sequences. Thus, all fish GCSD strains were clearly separated from the GCSD strains of other origin by using phylogenetic tree analysis. In addition, the original primer set was designed based on the determined sequences for specifically amplify the sodA gene of fish GCSD strains. The primer set yield amplification products from only fish GCSD strains. CONCLUSIONS: By sequencing analysis of the sodA gene, the genetic divergence between Strep. dysgalactiae strains isolated from fish and mammals was demonstrated. Moreover, an original oligonucletide primer set, which could simply detect the genotype of fish GCSD strains was designed. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study shows that Strep. dysgalactiae isolated from diseased fish could be distinguished from conventional GCSD strains by the difference in the sequence of the sodA gene. 相似文献

Novel ecological niche of Cetobacterium somerae, an anaerobic bacterium in the intestinal tracts of freshwater fish 总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
AIMS: This study was conducted to clarify the taxonomic status of Bacteroides type A strains with high vitamin B(12)-producing ability that is widely distributed in the intestinal tracts of freshwater fish. METHODS AND RESULTS: Seventeen strains of Bacteroides type A isolated from five fish species were all rod-shaped and gram-negative. The strains were positive for esculin hydrolysis, nitrate reduction, resistance to bile, acid phosphatase, and negative for the production of catalase and urease and the susceptibility to vancomycin. The G+C content of DNA from the 17 strains was 29 x 1-31 x 9 mol%, and 16S rDNA sequence analysis revealed a close phylogenetic relationship between Bacteroides type A strains and Cetobacterium somerae sharing 99 x 7-100% sequence similarity. In addition, strains were capable of producing vitamin B(12) at a rate of 1 x 82-13 x 98 ng ml(-1) in 48 h. CONCLUSION: Phenotypic and phylogenetic characteristics indicated that all isolates previously classified as Bacteroides type A strains belong to C. someare. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study provided the important finding of novel niche of vancomycin-resistant bacteria such as C. somerae in the intestinal tract of freshwater fish. 相似文献
