In this article we show that technological development in agriculture exhibits general trends when assessed on a large scale. These trends are generated by changes in the larger socioeconomic context in which the farming system operates. We characterize agricultural performance by land and farm labor productivity and the pattern of use of technological inputs. By means of a cross-sectional analysis of agricultural performance of 20 countries (at the national level), we show that increases in demographic pressure and socioeconomic pressure (increases in average income and labor productivity) in society are the main driving forces of technological development in agriculture. Further, it is shown that the ecological impact of farming (environmental loading) is linked to the particular combination of land productivity and labor productivity at which the agricultural sector operates (through the particular mix and the level of inputs used in agricultural production). Briefly we discuss the role of international trade in agricultural policies and performance. Special attention is given to the situation of Chinese agriculture.  相似文献

There continues to be much debate in anthropology concerning the mechanism by which agricultural intensification takes place and its impact on labor efficiency, farm diversity, and quality of diet. A major reason for this lack of consensus is the paucity of data from case studies that focus on specific agricultural systems at the point of transition from extensive to intensive methods of cultivation. Research in a frontier community in the Philippines, where farmers are making the shift from swidden cultivation to small-scale irrigated rice production, indicates that intensification does not necessarily result in lower efficiency or a decline in dietary standards. Rather, farmers faced with growing population pressure and an unproductive short fallow swidden system have been motivated to adopt irrigation because it increases the efficiency of their labor while maintaining a reliable and diverse farming system.  相似文献

5-Hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (5-HETE) is an arachidonic acid (AA) metabolite derived from the lipoxygenase pathway which is capable of inducing uterine contractions. The purpose of this study was to determine a). whether 5-HETE concentrations in amniotic fluid increase before or after the onset of labor and b). whether acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) could modulate the production of 5-HETE by human amnion cells. 5-HETE concentrations are increased in amniotic fluid before the onset of labor. Furthermore, ASA treatment as expected inhibited PGE2, but also significantly increased 5-HETE production by amnion cells. 5-HETE concentrations on average increased by greater than 2.5 fold (p < 0.001) in amniotic fluid prior to spontaneous labor when compared with samples obtained from the same patients earlier in gestation and therefore may be important in mechanisms regulating the onset of labor. ASA provokes an increase in 5-HETE biosynthesis by amnion cells: control media 2.60 ± 1.5, ASA treatment alone 5.17 ± 0.20, IL-1β alone 6.39 ± 2.1, and ASA + IL-1β 8.95 ± 1.2 (mean ± SEM) picograms per microgram protein per 16 hours. These findings may explain in part why cyclooxygenase inhibitors are not always successful in treating women with preterm labor.  相似文献

The initial examination of a male subject’s body temperature revealed that it was highest during the evening. Based on this observation, I measured grasping power, calculation speed, performance time on a light sensory task and body temperature, all of which were highest or best during the evening. The time of this subject’s best physical condition shifted from the evening to morning hours when the subject executed hard physical labor in the morning, and the shifted phase was maintained after the termination of the labor period.  相似文献

Even though female food acquisition is an area of considerable interest in hunter-gatherer research, the ecological determinants of women’s economic decisions in these populations are still poorly understood. The literature on female foraging behavior indicates that there is considerable variation within and across foraging societies in the amount of time that women spend foraging and in the amount and types of food that they acquire. It is possible that this heterogeneity reflects variation in the trade-offs between time spent in food acquisition and child care activities that women face in different groups of hunter-gatherers. In this paper we discuss the fitness trade-offs between food acquisition and child care that Hiwi and Ache women foragers might face. Multiple regression analyses show that in both populations the daily food acquisition of a woman’s spouse is negatively related to female foraging effort. In addition, nursing mothers spend less time foraging and acquire less food than do nonnursing women. As the number of dependents that a woman has increases, however, women also increase foraging time and the amount of food they acquire. Some interesting exceptions to these general trends are as follows: (a) differences in foraging effort between nursing and nonnursing women are less pronounced when fruits and roots are in season than in other seasons of the year; (b) foraging return rates decrease for Ache women as their numbers of dependents increase; and (c) among Ache women, the positive effect of number of dependents on foraging behavior is less pronounced when fruits are in season than at other times of the year. Lastly, in the Hiwi sample we found that postreproductive women work considerably harder than women of reproductive age in the root season but not in other seasons of the year. We discuss how ecological variation in constraints, the number of health insults to children that Hiwi and Ache mothers can avoid, and the fitness benefits they can gain from spending time in food acquisition and child care might account for differences and similarities in the foraging behaviors of subgroups of Hiwi and Ache mothers across different seasons of the year. Valid tests of the explanations we propose will require considerable effort to measure the relationship between maternal food acquisition, child care, and adverse health outcomes in offspring. We aimed to evaluate the effects of intra-amniotic surfactant administration on alveolar lecithin/sphingomyelin ratio, density of type II pneumocytes, and fetal lung function in preterm merino sheep. Pregnant ewes at 119 days gestation either received 200 mg intra-amniotic surfactant (n=4) or saline solution (n=4). After 24 h, the lambs were delivered by hysterotomy and mechanically ventilated. Lecithin/sphingomyelin ratios in alveolar fluid, inflating pressure–volume relationships, and type II pneumocyte counts in histological specimens were compared among the groups. All of the lambs completed the protocol. Mean lecithin/sphingomyelin ratio increased significantly in amniotic (p=0.03) and alveolar fluid (p=0.03) samples of surfactant-treated animals. Lung function in terms of pressure–volume curves did not differ between two groups. Type II pneumocyte density tended to be higher (p=0.057) after intra-amniotic surfactant administration. Single-dose treatment with intra-amniotic surfactant seems to improve amniotic and alveolar lecithin/sphingomyelin ratio questionably by increasing alveolar type II cells. Pressure–volume relationships from inflation of the lungs might be unaltered with intra-amniotic surfactant treatment.  相似文献

I measured oocyte sizes of Polybia occidentalis workers to assess whether ovary development corresponded with adult age or with individual variation in behavior. Workers exhibited temporal polyethism by first working inside the nest, then performing on-nest tasks, and later foraging and defending the nest. Individuals varied in their ages at first performance of each of these sets of behavioral acts. Ovary development corresponded strongly with adult age. Workers' ovaries declined quickly after an initial phase of partial development. The period of ovary decline overlapped with the age range at which most workers began performing tasks on the exterior nest surface. However, after accounting for age effects, individual behavioral differences (rate of temporal polyethism and performance of foraging and defense tasks) did not correspond with ovary development. These data suggest that ovary development had little or no effect on variation in task performance by P. occidentalis workers on the nest surface.  相似文献
