In the present communication, we propose a quantile-based measure for the divergence between two survival functions. This can also be used in a dynamic way where the divergence between survival functions varies with time. Several new properties of the proposed measure are investigated with suitable examples. The behavior of the measure for various reliability models is also investigated. A real data analysis is employed to compare the relative efficacy of two treatment groups using the proposed divergence measure.  相似文献

Treatment of chick embryos in ovo with IGF-I during the period of normal, developmentally regulated neuronal death (embryonic days 5–10) resulted in a dose-dependent rescue of a significant number of lumbar motoneurons from degeneration and death. IGF-II and two variants of IGF-I with reduced affinity for IGF binding proteins, des(1-3) IGF-I and long R3 IGF-I, also elicited enhanced survival of motoneurons equal to that seen in IGF-I-treated embryos. IGF-I did not enhance mitogenic activity in motoneuronal populations when applied to embryos during the period of normal neuronal proliferation (E2-5). Treatment of embryos with IGF-I also reduced two types of injury-induced neuronal death. Following either deafferentation or axotomy, treatment of embryos with IGF-I rescued approximately 75% and 50%, respectively, of the motoneurons that die in control embryos as a result of these procedures. Consistent with the survival-promoting activity on motoneurons in ovo, IGF-I, -II, and des(1-3) IGF-I elevated choline acetyltransferase activity in embryonic rat spinal cord cultures, with des (1-3) IGF-I demonstrating 2.5 times greater potency than did IGF-I. A single addition of IGF-I at culture initiation resulted in the maintenance of 80% of the initial ChAT activity for up to 5 days, during which time ChAT activity in untreated control cultures fell to 9%. In summary, these results demonstrate clear motoneuronal trophic activity for the IGFs. These findings, together with previous reports that IGFs are synthesized in muscle and may participate in motoneuron axonal regeneration and sprouting, indicate that these growth factors may have an important role in motoneuron development, maintenance, and recovery from injury. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Small individuals (<15 cm long) of the clingfish Sicyases sanguineus consume as many as 18 seaweed species in Central Chile. Enteromorpha sp. was the only species able to survive digestion by fish recently collected from the field. Enteromorpha compressa and Gelidium chilense also survived by tissue regeneration when offered as food in the laboratory, but only E. compressa showed stimulation of swarmer production. In general, our results on a vertebrate species reproduce previous findings on diverse invertebrate species. Since fish are highly motile, their capacity to disperse algal species by defecation might be of great ecological importance.  相似文献

Benthic algae survive passage through the digestive tract of different types of grazers, either regenerating new tissues or releasing protoplasts and swarmers which act as accessory means of reproduction to generate new individuals. The ecological importance of this phenomenon is evaluated here by studying spores and fecal pellets. Alga fragments egested alive inside fecal pellets have some ecological advantages over free propagules. In intertidal habitats, the sticky nature of the pellets permits attachment to the substratum while protecting the contained algae from desiccation. In subtidal habitats, the pellets sink 8–22 times faster than the fastest sinking algal propagule. Quantification of swarmers and protoplasts released from algal fragments in the fecal pellets indicates densities of about 217 germlings·cm?2 and values of 300–700 propagules per pellet. Extrapolation of these results to field conditions based on number of grazers and pellets suggest production figures varying from 0.5–3.5 × 105to 1.3–1.5 × 106 propagules·m?2·12 h?1. These values are within known density ranges of settling spores in the field. The ecological significance of the phenomenon may be especially important at seasons when the density of grazers increases and the normal reproductive activity of the algae being consumed decreases.  相似文献

Oviposition by northern corn rootworms, Diabrotica barberi Smith and Lawrence, and western corn rootworms, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), key pests of corn in the Great Plains of the USA, occurs in the soil during late summer. Overwintering eggs are exposed to variable soil moisture and temperatures below ?5 °C. The winter mortality of eggs in the soil is a primary factor that determines the potential for larval injury to corn the following spring. Our studies aimed to determine the comparative supercooling capacities of northern and western corn rootworm eggs and to assess egg mortality following brief exposure to extreme low temperature, ranging from ?12.0 to ?21.5 °C, under three moisture regimes. Eggs of northern corn rootworm were supercooled to a temperature as low as ?27 °C, and survived supercooling to a greater extent than did western corn rootworm eggs. Moisture treatment prior to supercooling had little effect on northern corn rootworm eggs. Western corn rootworm eggs were more resistant than northern corn rootworm eggs to the effects of desiccation followed by supercooling. The survival of northern corn rootworm eggs was better than western corn rootworms under dry conditions, followed by exposure to temperatures of ?12.0 and ?17.5 °C, but was very low at ?21.5 °C, regardless of the moisture regime. The results suggest that moisture and temperature may interact in the soil environment to determine the overwintering survival of corn rootworms. It is evident from these studies that both rootworm species experience mortality at temperatures well above the supercooling points of the eggs, but that differences exist in the effects of substrate moisture treatments on the cold‐hardiness of eggs from the two species.  相似文献

I review literature on juvenile mortality of captive prosimians in order to evaluate the available information on captive breeding. Juvenile mortality includes abortion, premature mortality, stillbirth, and death of the unweaned young. Prosimian juvenile mortality ranges between 25 and 45% in captive populations. It is generally lower in the Lemuroidea, particularly the Cheirogaleidae, than in the Lorisoidea. Mortality is particularly high in the Lorisinae. Most mortality, including a high stillbirth rate, occurs on the first day and during the first 10 days thereafter. Stress, maternal neglect and traumatic insults, not infrequently linked to each other, are the most frequently reported causes of death. The percentage of congenital malformations tends to be high in some colonies. Sex of the infant and parity seem to be important risk factors for juvenile mortality, whereas litter size does not appear to be important. Based on few data, wild- caught females appear to have higher breeding success than those born in captivity. Synchronized births in lemuroids and isolated births in Galagoare more likely to result in successfully weaned infants.  相似文献

Coloration of phyllopods varies from place to place and from one life stage to another. It ranges from translucent or whitish through gray, blue, green, orange, and reddish. Here, we present experimental evidence for a food- dependent color pattern inThamnocephalus platyurus Packard. The presence or absence of the synthetic pigment trans — — carotene in a baker's yeast diet was the controlling factor. All the 24 old larvae used in the experiment were whitish in color. From day 6 until the end the experiment (day 11), 100% of the shrimps under a diet with synthetic trans — — carotene (treatment 1) exhibited a characteristic color pattern which consisted of an orange color in the cercopods, and in all theracopods; the rest of the body exhibited no particular color. In comparison, 100% of the shrimps under a diet without synthetic trans — — carotene (treatment 2) were whitish throughout the body. In females from treatment 1, the ovaries and oocytes were green-bluish, while in females from treatment 2 the ovaries and oocytes were whitish. No significant differences in survival and growth were found, except that at day 9, there was a significant difference in growth, the females with the synthetic trans — — carotene group growing faster.  相似文献

The life-history parameters reproduction rate, developmental time and age specific survival of the western flower thrips,Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) [Thysanoptera: Thripidae], were determined on susceptible and resistant cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) genotypes. Both newly emerged andF. occidentalis females of mixed ages showed a substantial reduction (36 to 50%) of the reproduction rate on all resistant genotypes, in particular after the second day. On the resistant genotypes 9127 and 9140,F. occidentalis had a prolonged developmental period. This was primarily due to a prolongation of the second larval stage. On all resistant genotypes,F. occidentalis suffered from high (82 to 97%) preadult mortality, predominantly at the second larval stage. It is conclude that the resistant genotypes do not cause an immediate intoxication of adult nor preadult thrips stages.  相似文献

Human and murine blood cells treated with ZnCl2 and bis(sulfosuccinimidyl)suberate (BS3) (a cross linking agent) undergo band 3 clustering and binding of hemoglobin to red blood cell membrane proteins. These clusters induce autologous IgG binding and complement fixation, thus favouring the phagocytosis of ZnCl2/BS3 treated cells by macrophages. The extension of red blood cell opsonization can be easily modulated by changing the ZnCl2 concentration in the 0.1–1.0 mM range thus providing an effective way to affect blood cell recognition by macrophages. In fact, murine erythrocytes treated with increasing ZnCl2 concentrations have proportionally reduced survivals when reinjected into the animal. Furthermore, the organ sequestration of ZnCl2/BS3 treated cells strongly resembles the typical distribution of the senescent cells. Since the ZnCl2/BS3 treatment can also be performed on red blood cells loaded with drugs or other substances, this procedure is an effective drug-targeting system to be used for the delivery of molecules to peritoneal, liver and spleen macrophages.  相似文献
