Increasing evidence of the effects of changing climate on physical ocean conditions and long-term changes in fish populations adds to the need to understand the effects of stochastic forcing on marine populations. Cohort resonance is of particular interest because it involves selective sensitivity to specific time scales of environmental variability, including that of mean age of reproduction, and, more importantly, very low frequencies (i.e., trends). We present an age-structured model for two Pacific salmon species with environmental variability in survival rate and in individual growth rate, hence spawning age distribution. We use computed frequency response curves and analysis of the linearized dynamics to obtain two main results. First, the frequency response of the population is affected by the life history stage at which variability affects the population; varying growth rate tends to excite periodic resonance in age structure, while varying survival tends to excite low frequency fluctuation with more effect on total population size. Second, decreasing adult survival strengthens the cohort resonance effect at all frequencies, a finding that addresses the question of how fishing and climate change will interact.  相似文献

A photothermogram constructed for a central Missouri population (ca. 39°N latitude) of the sunflower moth, Homoeosoma electellum (Hulst) predicted that this population has a seasonal life cycle of 2 complete and a partial third generation per year, and that daylengths of less than 13 h 30 min light/day and mean temperatures of less than 20°C induce the mature larval diapause. A test of the predicted life cycle revealed that larvae entered diapause when they were exposed from their first instar onwards to natural conditions in central Missouri beginning September 15, 1982. Sunflower moths obtained from northwest Texas (ca. 35°N latitude) and northeast South Dakota (ca. 45°N latitude) displayed shorter critical photoperiods for diapause induction at 20°C (12 h 30 min light/day and 12 h 15 min light/day, respectively) than did those from Missouri. The population of the sunflower moth obtained from South Dakota does not, therefore, appear to be adapted to local conditions, and moths might disperse from lower latitudes to establish transiet populations each year.  相似文献

The multidrug resistance gene MDR1 (ABCB1) codes for a P-glycoprotein that acts as an ATP-dependent transporter and is involved in removing drugs, xenobiotics, and peptides from the cell. MDR1 is expressed in the brain, kidneys, liver, and gastrointestinal tract. The P-glycoprotein is thought to play a role in individual resistance to xenobiotics and infections. Several polymorphisms of MDR1 are associated with the level of its expression and resistance to various neurodegenerative and gastrointestinal diseases. The allele and haplotype frequencies, genetic differentiation, and linkage disequilibrium for five MDR1 single nucleotide polymorphisms (3435C/T, 2677G/T/A, 1236C/T, +139C/T, and ?1G/A) were studied in the Russian, Tuvinian, and northern and southern Kyrgyz populations. Significant genetic differences were observed between Russians and northern Kyrgyz and between Tuvinians and northern Kyrgyz. The linkage disequilibrium pattern was characterized by high population specificity.  相似文献

Calculations to derive effective population size become highly complicated when complex population structure is considered. We provide an easy method of computing the effective size of a subdivided population with overlapping generations (a spatiotemporally structured population) using an approximation based on separation of time scales. We also numerically compute the effective size to verify the accuracy of the derived formula. Various interesting quantities, including moments of coalescent time, are readily derived using this approach.  相似文献

The causes, effects and extent of minnow Phoxinus phoxinus introductions in Norway are reviewed to assess why the introductions have had severe effects, especially where brown trout Salmo trutta is the only fish species present. The natural distribution of minnow in Norway was mainly restricted to low altitude localities in the south-eastern part of the country and in some northern areas. The distribution area expanded considerably throughout the 1900s, especially in mountain areas, due in part to the use of minnows as live bait for angling. Although minnow densities do not seem unusually high in the relatively complex fish communities of its native range, the species can achieve very high population densities when introduced to communities with few fish species, such as in the numerous recently invaded lakes where brown trout was the only fish species present. The dense minnow populations in these lakes appear to have led to reduced recruitment and growth rates in the brown trout, with abundances on average 35% lower in lakes where minnow has been introduced. The success of minnow in harsh habitats demonstrates their phenotypic and ecological plasticity, but also implies that their original distribution in Norway was restricted by early immigration history and not by environmental limitations. This suggests that human-assisted spread of the species could have strong adverse effects in Scandinavia lakes of low fish species richness.  相似文献

Abstract: There is interest in expanding eastern wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris) populations north of their current range. We hypothesized that winter survival and food availability are primary determinants in setting the northern extent of wild turkey distribution. To test our hypothesis, we translocated wild turkey females north of their present range into central Minnesota, USA, and compared survival in areas with supplemental food in the form of corn food plots versus areas with no supplemental food. During 2 winters with below-average snow, winter survival was higher for females with supplemental food. In one winter with above-average snow depths, survival was extremely low even with supplemental food. Supplemental food could augment survival during mild winters if wildlife managers arrange with farmers to, annually, retain standing corn near roosting habitat, but food plots may only partially offset effects of deep snow. Managers should critically evaluate northern habitats, long-term costs of sustained feeding, and potential outcomes of concentrating animals and introducing wild animals into new ecosystems. Winter survival may delimit the northern range of wild turkeys, though annual survival rates may also be important and need further research.  相似文献

A previous study showed that some individuals of the tetraploid Galápagos endemic Scalesia affinis were able to produce offspring after selfing. The present study compares the fitness of self-pollinated offspring with the fitness of cross-pollinated offspring. Germination success, seedling survival, and four different growth parameters was measured. In most of the studied characters selfed offspring were significantly inferior to outcrossed progeny. The effect was very clear in germination and survival. Outcrossed embryos were 3.4 times more likely to germinate than those that were selfed-fertilized, and the mortality was 84% higher among selfed individuals. Also, there was no genetic variation in inbreeding depression. The present study is based on material from a large population on Isabela Island, Galápagos. At other localities in the archipelago, populations have been through recent dramatic bottlenecks due to the grazing of introduced mammals. Considering the significant inbreeding depression found in the large population and the presence of a partial self-incompatibility system, these small populations are likely to be highly vulnerable and their future survival critically threatened.  相似文献

To characterize the formation of silica spicules, the dynamics of spiculogenesis of an intertidal marine sponge Hymeniacidon perlevis (Montagu 1818) (Porifera: Demospongiae) were investigated by measuring the gene expression of silicatein (the enzyme responsible for spicule silicification) and the dimensional changes of spicules during the developmental process of individual sponges and in cell cultures of primmorphs of archaeocyte-dominant cell populations. The different developmental stages of spicules were documented by time-lapse microscopy and observed by transmission electron microscopy during a 1-month culture period. During its annual life cycle, H. perlevis has four different developmental stages: dormancy, resuscitation, bloom, and decline. Field-grown individual sponge samples at different stages were collected over 7 months (March to September 2005). The dimensions of the silica spicules from these samples were microscopically measured and statistically analyzed. This analysis and the material properties of the spicules allowed them to be classified into four groups representing the different developmental stages of spiculogenesis. Silicatein expression in the bloom stage was more than 100 times higher than that in the other stages and was correlated with the spicule developmental stage. The trend of spicule formation in field-grown sponges was consistent with the trend in cell culture. A new parameter, the maturation degree (MD) of spicules (defined as the ratio of actual to theoretical silica deposition of mature spicules), was introduced to quantify spicule development. Silica spiculogenesis during H. perlevis development was delineated by comparing MD and silicatein expression.  相似文献

Studies of the quantitative genetics of natural populations have contributed greatly to evolutionary biology in recent years. However, while pedigree data required are often uncertain (i.e. incomplete and partly erroneous) and limited, means to evaluate the effects of such uncertainties have not been developed. We have therefore developed a general framework for power and sensitivity analyses of such studies. We propose that researchers first generate a set of pedigree data that they wish to use in a quantitative genetic study, as well as data regarding errors that occur in that pedigree. This pedigree is then permuted using the data regarding errors to generate hypothetical 'true' and 'assumed' pedigrees that differ so as to mimic pedigree errors that might occur in the study system under consideration. Phenotypic data are then simulated across the true pedigree (according to user-defined genetic and environmental covariance structures), before being analysed with standard quantitative genetic techniques in conjunction with the 'assumed' pedigree data. To illustrate this approach, we conducted power and sensitivity analyses in a well-known study of Soay sheep (Ovis aries). We found that, although the estimation of simple genetic (co)variance structures is fairly robust to pedigree errors, some potentially serious biases were detected under more complex scenarios involving maternal effects. Power analyses also showed that this study system provides high power to detect heritabilities as low as about 0.09. Given this range of results, we suggest that such power and sensitivity analyses could greatly complement empirical studies, and we provide the computer program PEDANTICS to aid in their application.  相似文献
