Dung burial strategies in some South African coprine and onitine dung beetles (Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
ABSTRACT.
- 1 The dung colonization and dung burial behaviour of twelve crepuscular/nocturnal tunnelling (paracoprid) species of beetles were examined in order to identify mechanisms which might facilitate resource (dung) partitioning. The species were selected from a diverse assemblage of dung beetles, the members of which coexist in the sandy-soil regions of Natal, South Africa.
- 2 The pattern of dung colonization in relation to dung age was examined in the field using baited pitfall traps. Some species, e.g. Onitis deceptor Peringuey, Catharsius tricornutus De Geer and Copris elphenor Klug, showed a marked preference for fresh dung (1–2 days old) whereas other species, e.g. O. viridulus Boheman and Copris fallaciosus Gillet, preferred older dung (3–7 days old).
- 3 Two distinct patterns of dung burial were recognized. In the Coprini, dung burial was complete within 24–48h of pad colonization, and the level of dung burial was similar in the laboratory and in the field. In the Onitini, dung burial occurred progressively over a 12-day period, although the timing of initiation of dung burial varied between species: in O. deceptor nearly all individuals had begun burial within 2 days of pad colonization, whereas only 20% of O. viridulus had commenced dung burial by that time. However, nearly all O. viridulus had buried substantial quantities of dung by day 12.
- 4 The mass of dung buried per pair by the larger coprine beetles (100–300 g) and onitine beetles (400–1000 g) suggests that there is potential for inter- and intraspecific competition, even in pads colonized by relatively few beetles. The colonization and use of dung of different ages are discussed as means of resource partitioning in relation to the relative abilities of species to compete for dung.

ABSTRACT.
- 1 In a given ant species, the number of ants collecting honeydew in an aphid colony or extrafloral nectar on a plant is proportional to the productivity of the colony or plant. Thus, the number of ants per resource unit and the ingestion rate per ant are constant for a species.
- 2 Mean number of ants per resource unit and ingestion rate per ant differed considerably between the investigated species. The ingestion rate increases with the body size of the species and decreases with an increase of the mean number of ants per resource unit.
- 3 Ingestion rates were higher in ants foraging singly at the resource than in ants foraging in the normal way in a group.
- 4 It is suggested that the ingestion rate per ant is reduced below a maximum level by the number of ants present per resource unit because a certain number of ants is needed to defend the resource against alien ants. Small species need more individuals for this purpose than large species, and consequently suffer a larger reduction of their ingestion rate.

The host suitability of five of the most common weed species occurring in maize (Zea mays L.) fields in South Africa to Pratylenchus zeae was tested. Based on the number of nematodes per root unit, mealie crotalaria (Crotalaria sphaerocarpa) was a good host; goose grass (Eleusine indica), common pigweed (Amaranthus hybridus), and thorn apple (Datura stramonium) were moderate hosts; and khaki weed (Tagetes minuta) was a poor host. Only the root residues of khaki weed suppressed the P. zeae infestation of subsequently grown maize. When goose grass, khaki weed, and mealie crotalaria were grown in association with maize in soil infested with P. zeae, goose grass and khaki weed severely suppressed maize root development; this resulted in a low number of nematodes per maize root system and a high number of nematodes per maize root unit. Mealie crotalaria did not restrict maize root growth and did not affect nematode densities per maize root system or maize root unit. Special attention should be given to the control of mealie crotalaria, which is a good host for P. zeae, and goose grass, which, in addition to its ability to compete with maize, is also a suitable host for P. zeae. 相似文献

Microgeographical variation in shell morphology of the rock-dwelling land snail Chondrina clienta , collected from 30 sites within an area of 0.5 km2 on the island of Öland, Sweden, was examined in relation to its own population density and that of a potential competitor (the land snail Balea perversa ) and to environmental factors. Dispersal of marked individuals averaged 83 cm per year within a stone pile and 291 cm in an area of exposed bedrock. Local population density of active C. clienta ranged from 5 to 794 individuals per m2 . Shell characters were highly intercorrelated, both within and between populations. Principal component analysis revealed that most of the interpopulational variation could be expressed by the single character of shell height, which ranged from 5.54 to 6.94 mm. In all populations, snails of a given size had the same whorl number. Shell size was not influenced by habitat type (exposed rock surface, stone pile or stone wall) or proportion of calcareous stones within habitat. It was, however, negatively correlated with local population density, indicating intraspecific competition, and positively correlated with the degree of plant cover within the habitat. Analysis of variance revealed additionally a density effect of B. perversa on shell size in C. clienta , probably as a result of interspecific competition. Breeding experiments using C. clienta from different sites and carried out under unifrom conditions caused most of the phenotypic variation to disappear, demonstrating the high phenotypic plasticity of the species. 相似文献

Summary
Leucaena leucocephala generally produces pods with more than 7–9 seeds. This is regulated by the stigmatic inhibition of pollen grain germination when the pollen grains are less than a critical number in the stigma. This number-dependent inhibition of pollen grain germination is effected by a pH-dependent proteinaceous inhibitor active at the stigmatic pH. Only when the pollen grains in the stigma exceed the critical number, they inactivate the inhibitor by collectively raising the stigmatic pH and thus overcoming the inhibition. The adaptive significance of such pre-fertilization mechanism for the female in inciting mate competition among the pollen grains is discussed. The evolution of en masse pollen grain dispersal units is explained as a sexual selection strategy by males in response to such stigmatic inhibition by females. 相似文献

The maintenance of sexual reproduction is discussed using a model based on the familiar Lotka-Volterra competition equations. Both the equilibrium and the stability conditions that allow a sexual population to resist invasion by a single asexual clone are considered. The equilibrium conditions give results similar to previous models: When the cost of sex, within phenotype niche width, and environmental variance are low, the sexual population coexists with the asexual clone and remains at a high density. However, the asexual clone is never completely excluded. Analysis of the stability conditions shows a different picture: The introduction of an asexual clone considerably reduces the stability of the community. However, owing to its larger total niche width, the sexual population exists partly in a “competitor-free space” where the asexual clone has almost no influence on the outcome of the interactions. Therefore the asexual clone is less stable than the sexual population and has a higher probability of extinction. In contrast, the sexual population does not become extinct, since the extreme phenotypes remain at a stable, though low, density, and the central phenotypes, where stability is low, are recreated every generation through recombination. I therefore conclude that the ecological conditions under which sexual reproduction is favored over asexual reproduction are fairly easily attained and are more general than previous analyses had suggested. 相似文献

Guild structure in solitary spider-hunting wasps (Hymenoptera: Pompilidae) compared with null model predictions 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
JEREMY FIELD 《Ecological Entomology》1992,17(3):198-208
Abstract.
- 1 Three aspects of prey utilization are documented in a guild of spider-hunting pompilid wasps at a Breckland heath site: female phenology, size, and microhabitat utilization.
- 2 Twenty-four species were present at the site, 59% of the British fauna. Ten species individually represented more than 1% of the guild.
- 3 Pompilid abundance peaked in early July and mid-late August. Anoplius viaticus had a different life-history from other common guild members, making its inclusion in the guild questionable.
- 4 Most species represented by large samples occurred in all microhabitats and time intervals, and all species overlapped in size with all other species except A. viaticus. Arachnospila anceps was numerically dominant in all microhabitats and most time intervals.
- 5 Mean pair-wise overlaps in phenology and microhabitat utilization were significantly lower than predicted by null models, consistent with the idea that interspecific competition has been important in determining guild structure.
- 6 Female size is highly correlated with prey size, but the distribution of mean female sizes did not generally differ from null expectations.
- 7 Interpretation of comparisons with null models is problematic, particularly because it is difficult to quantify evolutionary ‘favourability’ of different resource states. Null models are currently of limited use because the patterns expected to result from key processes such as competition are uncertain in multi-dimensional systems.
