Intelligence is not a term commonly used when plants are discussed. However, I believe that this is an omission based not on a true assessment of the ability of plants to compute complex aspects of their environment, but solely a reflection of a sessile lifestyle. This article, which is admittedly controversial, attempts to raise many issues that surround this area. To commence use of the term intelligence with regard to plant behaviour will lead to a better understanding of the complexity of plant signal transduction and the discrimination and sensitivity with which plants construct images of their environment, and raises critical questions concerning how plants compute responses at the whole-plant level. Approaches to investigating learning and memory in plants will also be considered.  相似文献

Electroencephalography (EEG) signals collected from human brains have generally been used to diagnose diseases. Moreover, EEG signals can be used in several areas such as emotion recognition, driving fatigue detection. This work presents a new emotion recognition model by using EEG signals. The primary aim of this model is to present a highly accurate emotion recognition framework by using both a hand-crafted feature generation and a deep classifier. The presented framework uses a multilevel fused feature generation network. This network has three primary phases, which are tunable Q-factor wavelet transform (TQWT), statistical feature generation, and nonlinear textural feature generation phases. TQWT is applied to the EEG data for decomposing signals into different sub-bands and create a multilevel feature generation network. In the nonlinear feature generation, an S-box of the LED block cipher is utilized to create a pattern, which is named as Led-Pattern. Moreover, statistical feature extraction is processed using the widely used statistical moments. The proposed LED pattern and statistical feature extraction functions are applied to 18 TQWT sub-bands and an original EEG signal. Therefore, the proposed hand-crafted learning model is named LEDPatNet19. To select the most informative features, ReliefF and iterative Chi2 (RFIChi2) feature selector is deployed. The proposed model has been developed on the two EEG emotion datasets, which are GAMEEMO and DREAMER datasets. Our proposed hand-crafted learning network achieved 94.58%, 92.86%, and 94.44% classification accuracies for arousal, dominance, and valance cases of the DREAMER dataset. Furthermore, the best classification accuracy of the proposed model for the GAMEEMO dataset is equal to 99.29%. These results clearly illustrate the success of the proposed LEDPatNet19.  相似文献

The Province of Alberta in Canada was the only jurisdiction in the British Empire where a eugenic sterilization law was passed (in 1928) and vigorously implemented. The pace of sterilization orders accelerated during the Nazi era and remained high after World War II, terminating only in 1972 when the Sexual Sterilization Act was repealed. The Alberta Eugenics Board operated away from public and legislative scrutiny, and many things done in the name of eugenics were clearly illegal. Eugenics was put on trial in Alberta in 1995 and a judge of the Court of Queen's Bench ruled in 1996 that the government had wrongly sterilized Leilani Muir. After hearing evidence about the history of the eugenics movement, the origins of Alberta's Sexual Sterilization Act, the operation of the Eugenics Board, and details of Muir's life, Madam Justice Joanne B. Veit found that ‘the damage inflicted by the operation was catastrophic’, the ‘wrongful stigmatization of Ms. Muir as a moron ⋯ has humiliated Ms. Muir every day of her life’, and ‘the circumstances of Ms. Muir's sterilization were so high-handed and so contemptuous of the statutory authority to effect sterilization, and were undertaken in an atmosphere that so little respected Ms. Muir's human dignity that the community's, and the court's, sense of decency is offended’. Veit awarded Muir damages of $740,780 CAD and legal costs of $230,000 CAD. The order for Muir's sterilization was signed by John M. MacEachran, founder of the Department of Philosophy and Psychology at the University of Alberta and chairman of the Eugenics Board from 1929 to 1965. An exponent of Platonic idealism, MacEachran believed sterilization of children with a low IQ test score was a means of ‘raising and safeguarding the purity of the race’. However, the Alberta Sterilization Act was passed and implemented with cavalier disregard for the principles of genetics as well as the rights of children. Rules incorporating influences on global temperature, an estimate of radiation balance, were induced from astronomical, geophysical, and anthropogenic variables. During periods of intermediate global temperatures (generally like the present century), the influences assume cancelingroles; influences cancel the effects of extreme states potentially imposed by other influences because they are, in aggregate, most likely to be assuming opposite values. This imparts an overall stability to the global temperature. To achieve cold or hot global temperature, influences assume reinforcingroles. CO 2 is an active influence on global temperature. By virtue of its constancy in the atmosphere, it can be expected to sponsor frequent hot years in combination with the other influences as they cycle through their periods. If measures were implemented to maintain warm or cool global temperatures, it could retain the status quoof present global agricultural regions. They are probably more productive than hot world regions would be because of narrow storm tracks.  相似文献

目的:探讨胃癌围手术期能量及营养物质的代谢特点,研究强化胰岛素治疗对围手术营养代谢的影响。方法:选取胃中、下部癌病理诊断明确并且外科病房ICU住院时间不少于24h的患者64例,取得知情同意后随机分到强化胰岛素治疗(IIT)组血糖控制在4.4~6.1mmol/L,和传统治疗(CIT)组血糖控制在10mmol/L以下;应用CCM营养代谢监测系统测定围手术期静息能量消耗(REE),呼吸商(RQ),每公斤体重静息能量消耗(REE/kg)和脂肪氧化比率,应用多频人体生物电阻抗分析仪测定围手术期人体组分的变化及应用稳态模式评估法计算胰岛素抵抗指数(HOMA-IR)。结果:64例病人入选,每组32例,手术创伤引起术后第1、3天REE水平增加约22%和12%,呼吸商降低至0.759和0.791,REE/kg增加28kcal/kg和26kcal/kg,脂肪氧化比率增加至78%和65%,Ln-HOMA-IR明显增加(P〈0.05);IIT治疗能降低术后第1、3天Ln-HOMA-IR和REE/kg水平;术后人体指标如细胞内液、脂肪组织、蛋白组织、肌肉组织、瘦体组织和体质量较术前水平明显降低(P〈0.05);IIT能明显减少脂肪组织、蛋白组织和细胞内液的消耗量(P=0.009,t=0.026)。结论:IIT能够有效降低胃癌围手术期胰岛素抵抗程度、降低静息能量消耗的水平和减少脂肪及蛋白质的消耗。  相似文献

Objective: Neuropeptide Y (NPY), a 36‐amino acid peptide with orexigenic properties, is expressed abundantly in the central nervous system and binds to several NPY receptor subtypes. This study examines the roles of the NPY Y1, Y2, and Y5 receptor(s) in energy homeostasis. Research Methods and Procedures: We administered intracerebroventricular NPY (3 μg/d) or selective peptide agonists for the Y1, Y2, and Y5 receptor subtypes to C57Bl/6 mice for 6 days by mini‐osmotic pumps to assess the role of each receptor subtype in NPY‐induced obesity. Energy expenditure (EE) and respiratory quotient (RQ) were studied using indirect calorimetry. Adiposity was measured by DXA scanning and fat pad dissection. Insulin sensitivity was tested by whole‐blood glucose measurement after an insulin challenge. Results: Central administration of the selective Y1 agonist, Y5 agonist, or NPY for 6 days in mice significantly increased body weight, adiposity, and RQ, with significant hyperphagia in the Y5 agonist‐ and NPY‐treated groups but not in the Y1 agonist‐treated group. The NPY, Y1, or Y5 agonist‐treated mice had little change in total EE during ad libitum and pair‐feeding conditions. Conversely, selective activation of the Y2 receptor reduced feeding and resulted in a significant, but transient, weight loss. Discussion: Central activation of both Y1 and Y5 receptors increases RQ and adiposity, whereas only Y5 receptor activation reduces energy expended per energy ingested. Selective activation of Y2 autoreceptors leads to hypophagia and transient weight loss, with little effect on total EE. Our study indicates that all three NPY receptor subtypes may play a role in regulating energy homeostasis in mice.  相似文献

The question of whether a dietary supply of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and arachidonic acid (ARA) imparts advantages to visual or cognitive development in term infants has been debated for many years. DHA and ARA are present in human milk, and nursing infants consume these fatty acids needed for rapid synthesis of cell membranes, particularly neural cells. The reported mean DHA and ARA levels of human milk worldwide are 0.32% and 0.47% of total fatty acids, respectively. Prior to 2002 in the US, formula-fed infants did not receive these fatty acids and relied solely on endogenous conversion of the dietary essential omega-3 (n-3) and omega-6 (n-6) fatty acids, α-linolenic and linoleic acids, to DHA and ARA, respectively. Formula-fed infants were found to have significantly less accretion of DHA in brain cortex after death than breastfed infants. Numerous studies have found positive correlations between blood DHA levels and improvements in cognitive or visual function outcomes of breastfed and formula-fed infants. Results of randomized controlled clinical trials of term formula-fed infants evaluating functional benefits of dietary DHA and ARA have been mixed, likely due to study design heterogeneity. A comparison of visual and cognitive outcomes in these trials suggests that dietary DHA level is particularly relevant. Trials with formulas providing close to the worldwide human milk mean of 0.32% DHA were more likely to yield functional benefits attributable to DHA. We agree with several expert groups in recommending that infants receive at least 0.3% DHA, with at least 0.3% ARA, in infant feedings; in addition, some clinical evidence suggests that an ARA:DHA ratio greater than 1:1 is associated with improved cognitive outcomes.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This study investigated Hg uptake from soil into garden crops to help assess the significance of human consumption of crops as a potential route of exposure to Hg. Locations for both a floodplain and a control garden were identified within the Augusta Forestry Center near Crimora, VA, USA, which is about 16 river-km downstream from the city of Waynesboro, along the South River. The floodplain garden had measured soil Hg concentrations ranging from 4.2 to 78 mg Hg kg?1 dry weight basis in the surface to 15-cm deep layer. A total of 139 samples from the floodplain garden from 17 different crops were analyzed for Hg. All crop samples (except for nine) had less than 0.1 μg Hg g?1 wet weight basis (ww). Many samples were less than the method detection limit (MDL) of 0.003 μg Hg g?1 ww. Based on the measured Hg concentrations and several conservative assumptions (e.g., Hg assumed present when less than MDL; 100% consumption from the geographical area in which study was conducted; and 100% bioavailable Hg as methyl Hg), consumption of crops with these Hg levels is not expected to be a significant route of Hg exposure.  相似文献
