In this article, we demonstrate that arts integration holds unique promise and benefits for helping rural teachers to provide more equitable arts opportunities for their students. These benefits include: professional network development in the service of both curricular development for arts integration and connecting teachers who often work in isolation; additional funding to allow for collaborative planning; and introduction to arts experiences and cultural resources for use in arts-integrated unit planning and implementation. We describe the Perpich Arts Integration Project—an innovative, state-funded program centered on a Collaborative Arts Integration Framework in three rural regions of Minnesota. Then, through data collected via a three-year longitudinal program documentation and evaluation, we describe several themes that we have identified about the implementation of arts integration in rural schools. Finally, we will describe a series of considerations and implications for rural schools seeking to implement such a program in the future.  相似文献

The integration of root and shoot activity for resource acquisition and allocation is a central problem both in experimental physiology and in mathematical growth modelling. A key feature in all proposed solutions is the mechanism by which roots and shoot communicate their resource status, their needs or their demands. In experimental studies, chemical messengers (hormones or nutrients) have been central. In mathematical models, partitioning or productivity functions of one form or another have been incorporated to fill a similar role. In this paper, the central hypothesis is that growth and resource allocation can be based solely on local, internal, non-structural resource concentrations and local kinetic rules, without the need for additional mechanisms to integrate activities at the organis-mal level. The specific objective was to develop a formal model using the classical two-compartment, two-resource framework which did not include direct intercompartmental coordinating or communicating mechanisms or resource partitioning functions. The formalization effort was successful based on two criteria. First, the ‘plants’ grow at steady and balanced rates when ‘growth conditions’ are constant; and second, challenged with experimental manipulations such as pruning or limitations in resource acquisition, their growth responses mimic those of real plants. Analysis of the results indicates that the complex integrated growth patterns of the modelled plants are emergent properties – having no direct or indirect mechanistic basis – of the simple system. They imply that similar ‘mechanism-less’ integration is possible in real plants as an emergent property of strictly local, cellular-level activities.  相似文献

Abstract We have developed a strategy for the integration and stable amplification of DNA sequences in the chromosome of poorly transformable bacilli, which avoids the presence of a functional plasmid replication system in the integrated DNA. The parental vector for integration contains two plus origins of replication from pUB110 in the same orientation on a single plasmid. Due to the direct repeats, such plasmids produce two individual progeny vectors, one of which is dependent on the other for replication, as it lacks a functional rep gene. We have used such a progeny vector system to integrate and amplify DNA on the chromosome of Bacillus licheniformis , and show that the structure is stable in the absence of selective pressure.  相似文献

With school days seemingly getting shorter and packed with more and more obligations, teachers integrate core subjects like science and reading in the hopes of delivering a curriculum that is meaningful and content rich. Using trade books, primary teachers can develop and deliver science content designed to introduce students to proenvironmental behaviors built around the Next Generation Science Earth and Human Activity Standard, Human Impacts on Earth Systems, ESS3-C. The Next Generation Science standards call for integrating literacy skills and science to develop knowledge of scientific topics. This article shares ideas on how primary teachers can use a variety of children’s literature as a foundation to inspire young students to take small steps toward developing proenvironmental behaviors. Under an umbrella of three environmental themes, proenvironmental behavior, trash, and water pollution, the article describes key concepts, vocabulary, and activities designed to develop a mindfulness of proenvironmental behaviors for each selected text. While texts and learning experiences are intentionally focused on young learners (Kindergarten/first grade), they can be adapted and used in all primary grades.  相似文献

Phenotypic integration and modularity represent important factors influencing evolutionary change. The mammalian cervical vertebral column is particularly interesting in regards to integration and modularity because it is highly constrained to seven elements, despite widely variable morphology. Previous research has found a common pattern of integration among quadrupedal mammals, but integration patterns also evolve in response to locomotor selective pressures like those associated with hominin bipedalism. Here, I test patterns of covariation in the cervical vertebrae of three hominoid primates (Hylobates, Pan, Homo) who engage in upright postures and locomotion. Patterns of integration in the hominoid cervical vertebrae correspond generally to those previously found in other mammals, suggesting that integration in this region is highly conserved, even among taxa that engage in novel positional behaviors. These integration patterns reflect underlying developmental as well as functional modules. The strong integration between vertebrae suggests that the functional morphology of the cervical vertebral column should be considered as a whole, rather than in individual vertebrae. Taxa that display highly derived morphologies in the cervical vertebrae are likely exploiting these integration patterns, rather than reorganizing them. Future work on vertebrates without cervical vertebral number constraints will further clarify the evolution of integration in this region.  相似文献

许昌人遗址位于河南省许昌市灵井镇,2005-2017年发掘,揭露面积500余平方米,2007、2014年在9号探方出土包括2颗"许昌人"头骨在内的5个古人类个体,大量的石制品和21种哺乳动物化石。头骨具有东亚古人类、欧洲尼安德特人和早期现代人的镶嵌特征,可能代表一种新型的古老型人类。石制品研究显示,石核类型多样,且以小型双锥形盘状石核为特色;小型工具类型分异明显、加工精细,显示出不同于旧石器时代早期遗址中的工具技术,而与西方旧石器时代中期遗址工具技术上的特点较为一致。此外,遗址出土7件软锤工具,以动物长骨或鹿角为原料,用以修理石质工具。软锤工具的发现,对于认识中国旧石器时代技术的发展有重要意义。通过对遗址形成过程的分析,"许昌人"生活时期的沉积环境经历了三个阶段:下部灰绿色滨湖相粉砂堆积所指示的水流动力相对较弱的沉积环境,中部综红色粉砂堆积所指示的水流动力相对较强的沉积环境,以及上部浅棕红色粉砂堆积所指示的相对冷湿、水动力仍然较强的沉积环境。尽管存在水动力强弱上的相对变化,但水动力总体上并不大,以低能量水流为主,文化遗物属于原地埋藏。今后将开展人类艺术行为能力、古人用软锤和压制法制作石器的技术、动物埋藏学和年代学等方面的深入研究。  相似文献

Mitochondrial damage triggers mitochondrial quality control pathways, which act to ensure the health of the mitochondrial network. The turnover of damaged mitochondria by mitophagy is initiated by the Parkinson disease-linked genes PRKN and PINK1, and we recently investigated the role that interorganellar contact sites between the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and the outer mitochondrial membrane (OMM) play in this pathway. In this punctum, we summarize our findings that show that the ER-OMM tether MFN2 acts as a suppressor of mitophagy through its ability to link the OMM to the ER, potentially limiting the accessibility of other ubiquitination substrates to PINK1 and PRKN. PINK1, PRKN and the AAA-ATPase VCP disrupt contact between mitochondria and the ER via MFN2 ubiquitination, retrotranslocation and turnover from the mitochondrial membrane. Our study provides insight into the role of OMM remodeling in mitophagy.  相似文献

Hypoxia‐dependent accumulation of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) plays a major role in retinal diseases characterized by neovessel formation. In this study, we investigated whether the glial water channel Aquaporin‐4 (AQP4) is involved in the hypoxia‐dependent VEGF upregulation in the retina of a mouse model of oxygen‐induced retinopathy (OIR). The expression levels of VEGF, the hypoxia‐inducible factor‐1α (HIF‐1α) and the inducible form of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), the production of nitric oxide (NO), the methylation status of the HIF‐1 binding site (HBS) in the VEGF gene promoter, the binding of HIF‐1α to the HBS, the retinal vascularization and function have been determined in the retina of wild‐type (WT) and AQP4 knock out (KO) mice under hypoxic (OIR) or normoxic conditions. In response to 5 days of hypoxia, WT mice were characterized by (i) AQP4 upregulation, (ii) increased levels of VEGF, HIF‐1α, iNOS and NO, (iii) pathological angiogenesis as determined by engorged retinal tufts and (iv) dysfunctional electroretinogram (ERG). AQP4 deletion prevents VEGF, iNOS and NO upregulation in response to hypoxia thus leading to reduced retinal damage although in the presence of high levels of HIF‐1α. In AQP4 KO mice, HBS demethylation in response to the beginning of hypoxia is lower than in WT mice reducing the binding of HIF‐1α to the VEGF gene promoter. We conclude that in the absence of AQP4, an impaired HBS demethylation prevents HIF‐1 binding to the VEGF gene promoter and the relative VEGF transactivation, reducing the VEGF‐induced retinal damage in response to hypoxia.  相似文献

Coccinellid pupae have various defensive traits, such as keeping their final‐instar larval exuviae and secreting droplets containing defensive chemicals at the tips of glandular hairs. Although each of these traits has been described separately in different species, it is unclear how each defensive trait functions when more than one trait coexists. We found that pupae of the ladybird Scymnus posticalis have two different types of traits; they were partially covered with their own final‐instar larval exuviae, with thick wax structures, and had many glandular hairs secreting transparent droplets on the exposed parts of the body without waxy exuviae (head and medial parts of thoracic and abdominal dorsum). In this study, the defensive effects of these two traits were evaluated against two ant species, Tetramorium tsushimae and Lasius japonicus, which are potential predators. When encountering a pupa, neither ant species were able to make frequent physical contact with the exposed parts of the pupa because of the presence of the waxy exuviae. When touching the exposed body part that was covered with droplets, both ant species immediately stepped backward and then swept their antennae. The droplets suppressed ant feeding when mixed with sucrose solution, suggesting that the droplets contain repellent chemicals. These results indicate that the two traits of S. posticalis pupae (the larval waxy exuviae and the droplets) effectively play defensive roles against ants, functioning as a physical obstruction and a chemical repellent, respectively.  相似文献
