Trait-based ecology predicts that evolution in high-resource agricultural environments should select for suites of traits that enable fast resource acquisition and rapid canopy closure. However, crop breeding targets specific agronomic attributes rather than broad trait syndromes. Breeding for specific traits, together with evolution in high-resource environments, might lead to reduced phenotypic integration, according to predictions from the ecological literature. We provide the first comprehensive test of these hypotheses, based on a trait-screening programme of 30 herbaceous crops and their wild progenitors. During crop evolution plants became larger, which enabled them to compete more effectively for light, but they had poorly integrated phenotypes. In a subset of six herbaceous crop species investigated in greater depth, competitiveness for light increased during early plant domestication, whereas diminished phenotypic integration occurred later during crop improvement. Mass-specific leaf and root traits relevant to resource-use strategies (e.g. specific leaf area or tissue density of fine roots) changed during crop evolution, but in diverse and contrasting directions and magnitudes, depending on the crop species. Reductions in phenotypic integration and overinvestment in traits involved in competition for light may affect the chances of upgrading modern herbaceous crops to face current climatic and food security challenges. 相似文献

This article assesses the impact of economic integration on Tanzania's sociometabolic profile for the years 1970–2011, which witnessed an opening and further integration of Tanzania's economy through increased trade and foreign investment, through a time‐series economy‐wide material flows analysis (EW‐MFA). The EW‐MFA results show that contrary to the trade patterns of many developing countries, increased economic integration has resulted in Tanzania becoming a net importer of resources across all material categories when measured by the physical trade balance indicator. Additionally, the article discusses the conceptual and empirical challenges of measuring ecologically unequal exchange with EW‐MFAs for developing countries whose export profiles are dominated by lightweight, high‐value precious stones and metals. It also assesses the degree to which the Tanzanian economy has undergone dematerialization over the past 40 years of economic integration. 相似文献

Trotz intensiver Bemühungen im Bereich des Pflanzenschutzes sind weltweit erhebliche Verluste im Bereich pflanzlicher Erntegüter zu verzeichnen. Rund ein Drittel der Verluste werden mikrobiellen Schaderregern, also Pilzen, Bakterien und Viren, zugeschrieben. Besonders schwierig ist der Tatsache zu begegnen, dass Pilze gegenüber spezifisch wirkenden Fungiziden Insensitivitäten bzw. Resistenzen entwickeln. Aus diesem Grunde muss über geeignete Strategien beim Fungizideinsatz, beim ‘Disease management’ und bei der Suche nach neuen, hochwirksamen Fungiziden nachgedacht werden. Der Erfolg bei der Suche nach neuen Fungiziden wird stark davon abhängen, ob neue Zielmoleküle für potentielle Fungizide entdeckt werden können. Inspired by recent efforts in the United States to quantify the degree of transnational ties that immigrants possess, this article explores and analyses the prevalence and determinants of transnational family ties of immigrants in the Netherlands. Using data from a representative survey of four immigrant groups in the Netherlands, this paper also aims to fill the gap in knowledge regarding the effects of incorporation into an immigrant's host society on transnational family ties. Findings show that, while the vast majority of immigrants with relatives in the country of origin have frequent contact with these relatives, only a third of respondents contribute to the livelihood of family members in the homeland. Incorporation characteristics show distinct patterns over different types of involvement. While incorporation variables have a negative effect on the frequency of contact, they show little effect on remittances. 相似文献

Early psychological theories of autism explained the clinical features of this condition in terms of perceptual and sensory processing impairments. The arrival of domain-specific social cognitive theories changed this focus, postulating a ‘primary’ and specific psychological impairment of social cognition. Across the years, evidence has been growing in support of social cognitive and social attention explanations in autism. However, there has also been evidence for general non-social cognitive impairments in representational understanding, attention allocation and sensory processing. Here, I review recent findings and consider the case for the specificity and primacy of the social cognitive impairment, proposing that we should focus more explicitly on clinically valid features for insights on the integration of ‘social’ and ‘non-social’ cognition. 相似文献

Despite recent advances, accurate gene function prediction remains an elusive goal, with very few methods directly applicable to the plant Arabidopsis thaliana. In this study, we present GO‐At (gene ontology prediction in A. thaliana), a method that combines five data types (co‐expression, sequence, phylogenetic profile, interaction and gene neighbourhood) to predict gene function in Arabidopsis. Using a simple, yet powerful two‐step approach, GO‐At first generates a list of genes ranked in descending order of probability of functional association with the query gene. Next, a prediction score is automatically assigned to each function in this list based on the assumption that functions appearing most frequently at the top of the list are most likely to represent the function of the query gene. In this way, the second step provides an effective alternative to simply taking the ‘best hit’ from the first list, and achieves success rates of up to 79%. GO‐At is applicable across all three GO categories: molecular function, biological process and cellular component, and can assign functions at multiple levels of annotation detail. Furthermore, we demonstrate GO‐At’s ability to predict functions of uncharacterized genes by identifying ten putative golgins/Golgi‐associated proteins amongst 8219 genes of previously unknown cellular component and present independent evidence to support our predictions. A web‐based implementation of GO‐At ( http://www.bioinformatics.leeds.ac.uk/goat ) is available, providing a unique resource for plant researchers to make predictions for uncharacterized genes and predict novel functions in Arabidopsis. 相似文献

We previously reported an accumulative site-specific gene integration system using Cre recombinase and mutated loxP sites, where a recombinase-mediated cassette exchange (RMCE) reaction is repeatable. This gene integration system was applied for antibody production using recombinant Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. We introduced an exchange cassette flanked by wild-type and mutated loxP sites into the chromosome of CHO cells for the establishment of recipient founder cells. Then, the donor plasmids including an expression cassette for an antibody gene flanked by a compatible pair of loxP sites were prepared. The donor plasmid and a Cre expression vector were co-transfected into the founder CHO cells to give rise to RMCE in the CHO genome, resulting in site-specific integration of the antibody gene. The RMCE procedure was repeated to increase the copy numbers of the integrated gene. Southern blot and genomic PCR analyses for the established cells revealed that the transgenes were integrated into the target site. Antibody production determined by ELISA and western blotting was increased corresponding to the number of transgenes. These results indicate that the accumulative site-specific gene integration system could provide a useful tool for increasing the productivity of recombinant proteins. 相似文献
