How will climate change affect the sustainability of Arctic villages over the next 40 years? This question motivated a collaboration of 23 researchers and four Arctic communities (Old Crow, Yukon Territory, Canada; Aklavik, Northwest Territories, Canada; Fort McPherson, Northwest Territories, Canada; and Arctic Village, Alaska, USA) in or near the range of the Porcupine Caribou Herd. We drew on existing research and local knowledge to examine potential effects of climate change, petroleum development, tourism, and government spending cutbacks on the sustainability of four Arctic villages. We used data across eight disciplines to develop an Arctic Community Synthesis Model and a Web-based, interactive Possible Futures Model. Results suggested that climate warming will increase vegetation biomass within the herd’s summer range. However, despite forage increasing, the herd was projected as likely to decline with a warming climate because of increased insect harassment in the summer and potentially greater winter snow depths. There was a strong negative correlation between hypothetical, development-induced displacement of cows and calves from utilized calving grounds and calf survival during June. The results suggested that climate warming coupled with petroleum development would cause a decline in caribou harvest by local communities. Because the Synthesis Model inherits uncertainties associated with each component model, sensitivity analysis is required. Scientists and stakeholders agreed that (1) although simulation models are incomplete abstractions of the real world, they helped bring scientific and community knowledge together, and (2) relationships established across disciplines and between scientists and communities were a valuable outcome of the study. Threeline grunt (Parapristipoma trilineatum) distributes around the southwestern coast of Japan and the east coast of China. The Chinese P. trilineatum was imported by Japan as an aquacultural seed because of its rapid growth compared with that of the Japanese P. trilineatum. The Japanese P. trilineatum differs from the Chinese P. trilineatum in some quantitative traits, and it has been suggested that these two P. trilineatum populations are genetically different. In order to identify the population structures around Japan and China, 5 local populations of the Japanese P. trilineatum and 2 local populations of the Chinese P. trilineatum were analyzed using 4 microsatellite DNA markers. Significant differences were detected between Japanese and Chinese P. trilineatum and among samples of Chinese P. trilineatum; however, among the samples of Japanese P. trilineatum, no significant differences were detected. These results suggest that care must be taken to prevent the escape of the Chinese P. trilineatum from culture cages around the Japanese coast, in order to preserve the genetically different population structures of Japanese and Chinese P. trilineatum. 相似文献

The effects of glucose concentration and irradiance on mixotrophiccultivation of Platymonas subcordiformis were investigated in flaskcultures. The optimal glucose concentration was 24 g L-1, andirradiance was 95 mol photon m-2 s-1. Based on theoptimization of culture conditions and a modified SK(IA) medium, themaximum biomass was 3.68 g L-1 after 14 days, which was about6 times that in autotrophic culture, and the specific growth rate reached0.62 d-1, twice that in autotrophic culture. Using the optimalconditions established in flasks, mixotrophic culture in a 5.0-Lphotobioreactor was achieved, and the yield after 8 days was 3.30 gL-1. 相似文献

The hexamitid flagellate Spironucleus vortens, previously reported from Pterophyllum scalare from Florida, was found in the intestine of Leuciscus idus in Norway. The flagellate was cultivated and studied by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Identification was based on a suite of ultrastructural features unique for S. vortens: compound lateral ridges, a swirled posterior end, and a distinctive microtubular cytoskeleton. Microfibrillar structures with a periodicity of 0.13 microm in the right peripheral part of the compound lateral ridges were shown to be responsible for the distinctive rope-like appearance of the peripheral ridge seen in scanning electron micrographs, and not previously reported for S. vortens. The present results show a wide geographic distribution and a wide temperature tolerance for S. vortens. The flagellate was successfully cultivated at 5 degrees C and 15 degrees C, having previously been cultivated between 2-34 degrees C. Spironucleus vortens is believed to be endemic in Norwegian waters, but an introduction hypothesis is also discussed. The similarity is striking between S. vortens and S. elegans, previously described from amphibians and fish in Europe, and the possibility of conspecificity is believed to be high. 相似文献

Vibrio harveyi was isolated from internal organs or ulcers of diseased and apparently healthy gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) and European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) cultured in several fish farms located on the Spanish Mediterranean coast. The prevalence of the bacterium was significantly higher in European sea bass than in gilthead sea bream, and was closely related to the season in both fish species, occurring almost exclusively on warm months (June to November). After phenotypic characterization, a selection of forty five isolates from gilthead sea bream, sea bass, and several isolates previously obtained from common dentex (Dentex dentex) of the same area, were molecularly typed by automated ribotyping and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis. Cluster analysis of data established 8 RAPD types and 13 ribotypes among wild isolates, and the combination of both techniques allowed to define fourteen different groups and a clear discrimination of all outbreaks and samplings. Several strains isolated from diseased gilthead sea bream and sea bass and also from asymptomatic sea bream, were tested for virulence in both fish species by intracoelomic injection. All the isolates (11) were pathogenic for sea bass, with nine out of the eleven LD50 values ranging from 1.5 x 10(5) to 1.6 x 10(6) cfu/fish. Gilthead sea bream was unaffected by the seven tested strains, even by those more virulent for sea bass, and only one strain caused a 10% mortality at 4.2 x 10(7) cfu/fish. While pond culturing is still the staple of Chinese freshwater fisheries, its extensive development is handicapped by the increasing shortage of land resource for cereal production in face of China’s population growth. Accordingly, people have looked towards the development of aquaculture in lakes (and reservoirs) in the 1970s. This paper reviews the successful integrated measures taken in an experiment for raising fish in Donghu lake (East lake) of Wuhan. By way of (1) stocking the right kinds of fish; (2) producing a large number of sizeable fingerlings; (3) improving fish screens; (4) controlling predatory fish; and (5) applying the ‘driving and concentrating’ bulk harvesting fishing method, fish production of the lake has increased steadily from 180 t in 1971 to 800 t in 1978, and then to 1840 t in 1995, all in an area of 1500 ha, and all without any supplementary feeding. Integrated aquaculture in paddy fields, known to be beneficial to both rice and fish production, has been regaining momentum in recent years. Abstract: A conventional sampling plan for the leafhopper Empoasca kraemeri Ross & Moore (Auchenorrhyncha: Cicadellidae) in common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is presented based on samples from 51 commercial fields. The research encompassed three phases. The first phase had the objective of determining the most suitable leaf to be used as a precise and representative sampling unit. In the second phase of the project, the available sampling methods for E. kraemeri were compared, including the approach identified in the first phase. In the third phase, the theoretical frequency distribution of the sampling data was assessed and the number of samples necessary for the sampling plan was established. The best leaves to sample adult leafhoppers were the fourth and the fifth from the apex, while the best leaf for sampling nymphs was the fifth from the apex. The best sampling technique for nymphs and adults was the beating of the apical leaves against a plastic tray. The sampling data obtained with this technique were fit to a negative binomial distribution with common aggregation parameter for adults ( K common = 1.04) and nymphs ( K common = 0.47). This sampling plan required 16.8 and 31.2 min to be carried out at an expense of US$ 0.31 and US$ 0.54 for sampling adults and nymphs in a field, respectively. 相似文献
