Ontogenetic dietary shifts (ODSs), the changes in diet utilisation occurring over the life span of an individual consumer, are widespread in the animal kingdom. Understanding ODSs provides fundamental insights into the biological and ecological processes that function at the individual, population and community levels, and is critical for the development and testing of hypotheses around key concepts in trophic theory on model organisms. Here, we synthesise historic and contemporary research on ODSs in fishes, and identify where further research is required. Numerous biotic and abiotic factors can directly or indirectly influence ODSs, but the most influential of these may vary spatially, temporally and interspecifically. Within the constraints imposed by prey availability, we identified competition and predation risk as the major drivers of ODSs in fishes. These drivers do not directly affect the trophic ontogeny of fishes, but may have an indirect effect on diet trajectories through ontogenetic changes in habitat use and concomitant changes in prey availability. The synthesis provides compelling evidence that ODSs can have profound ecological consequences for fish by, for example, enhancing individual growth and lifetime reproductive output or reducing the risk of mortality. ODSs may also influence food‐web dynamics and facilitate the coexistence of sympatric species through resource partitioning, but we currently lack a holistic understanding of the consequences of ODSs for population, community and ecosystem processes and functioning. Studies attempting to address these knowledge gaps have largely focused on theoretical approaches, but empirical research under natural conditions, including phylogenetic and evolutionary considerations, is required to test the concepts. Research focusing on inter‐individual variation in ontogenetic trajectories has also been limited, with the complex relationships between individual behaviour and environmental heterogeneity representing a particularly promising area for future research.  相似文献

Diets play a key role in understanding trophic interactions. Knowing the actual structure of food webs contributes greatly to our understanding of biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. The research of prey preferences of different predators requires knowledge not only of the prey consumed, but also of what is available. In this study, we applied DNA metabarcoding to analyze the diet of 4 bird species (willow tits Poecile montanus, Siberian tits Poecile cinctus, great tits Parus major and blue tits Cyanistes caeruleus) by using the feces of nestlings. The availability of their assumed prey (Lepidoptera) was determined from feces of larvae (frass) collected from the main foraging habitat, birch (Betula spp.) canopy. We identified 53 prey species from the nestling feces, of which 11 (21%) were also detected from the frass samples (eight lepidopterans). Approximately 80% of identified prey species in the nestling feces represented lepidopterans, which is in line with the earlier studies on the parids' diet. A subsequent laboratory experiment showed a threshold for fecal sample size and the barcoding success, suggesting that the smallest frass samples do not contain enough larval DNA to be detected by high‐throughput sequencing. To summarize, we apply metabarcoding for the first time in a combined approach to identify available prey (through frass) and consumed prey (via nestling feces), expanding the scope and precision for future dietary studies on insectivorous birds.  相似文献

An evaluation of the factors affecting silage dry-matter intake (SDMI) of dairy cows was conducted based on dietary treatment means. The data were divided into six subsets based on the silage treatments used in the experiments: concentration of digestible organic matter in dry matter (D-value) influenced by the maturity of grass ensiled (n = 81), fermentation quality influenced by silage additives (n = 240), dry matter (DM) concentration influenced by wilting of grass prior to ensiling (W; n = 85), comparison of silages made from primary growth or regrowth of grass (n = 46), and replacement of grass silage with legume (L; n = 53) or fermented whole-crop cereal (WC; n = 37) silages. The data were subjected to the mixed model regression analysis. Both silage D-value and fermentation quality significantly affected SDMI. The average effects of D-value and total acid (TA) concentration were 17.0 g and − 12.8 per 1 g/kg DM, respectively. At a given D-value, silage neutral-detergent fibre (NDF) concentration tended to decrease SDMI. Silage TA concentration was the best fermentation parameter predicting SDMI. Adding other parameters into the multivariate models did not improve the fit and the slopes of the other parameters remained insignificant. Total NDF intake was curvilinearly related to silage D-value the maximum intake being reached at a D-value of 640 g/kg DM. Results imply that physical fill is not limiting SDMI of highly digestible grass silages and that both physical and metabolic factors constrain total DM intake in an interactive manner. Silage DM concentration had an independent curvilinear effect on SDMI. Replacing primary growth silage with regrowth, L or WC silages affected SDMI significantly, the response to regrowth silage being linearly decreasing and to L and WC quadratically increasing. The outcome of factors affecting SDMI was used to update the relative SDMI index as follows: SDMI index = 100+10 × [(D-value − 680) × 0.0170 − (TA − 80) × 0.0128+(0.0198 ×  (DM − 250) − 0.00002364 × (DM2 − 250 2)) − 0.44 × a+4.13 × b − 2.58 × b2+5.90 × c − 6.14 × c2 − 0.0023 × (550 − NDF)], where a, b and c represent the proportions (0–1) of regrowth, L or WC silages from total silage DM. For the whole data set, one index unit corresponded to the default value of 0.10 kg in SDMI. The SDMI index explained proportionally 0.852 of the variation in SDMI with 0.34 kg DM per day residual. The updated SDMI index provides improved basis for the practical dairy cow ration formulation and economic evaluation.  相似文献

Bee dietary preferences,or the floral resources that they consistently collect,likely impact where a species can persist.For this reason it is likely that bee dietary preferences are dependent upon the composition of the plant community.In this study,we evaluated floral visits and pollen loads of the mining bee,Andrena angustitarsata Viereck,across a 630 km north-south range to understand dietary preferences along a floral resource gradient.Previous research,in a more geographically limited area,suggested this species was an eclectic oligolege on predominantly Apiaceae and in part Rosaceae.In the present study we found the species predominately visited and collected pollen from Apiaceae and Rosaceae,but visited 12 flower families and collected pollen from 32,distinguishing them as generalist foragers.The frequency of Apiaceae pollen on the bees and the species-level specialization index(a measure of visit specialization)were higher in regions with higher Apiaceae abundance.In addition Apiaceae and Rosaceae were the only plant families significantly preferred for pollen collection,regardless of floral abundance.We conclude that across our study region A.angustitarsata has a generalist dietary breadth,but also has dietary preference for Apiaceae and Rosaceae.Our study indicates that while bees may overall make generalist foraging decisions they may still prefer and likely benefit from selecting fewer flower taxa.  相似文献

The purpose of this present study was to compare the physiological effects of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties of the fabrics investigated in exercising and resting subjects at an ambient temperature of 30°C and a relative humidity of 50% with and without wind. Three kinds of clothing ensemble were tested: wool and cotton blend with high moisture regain (A), 100% cotton with intermediate moisture regain (B), 100% polyester clothing with low moisture regain (C). The experiments were performed using seven young adult women as subjects. They comprised six repeated periods of 10-min exercise on a cycle ergometer at an intensity of 40% maximal oxygen uptake followed by 5 min of rest (20 min for the last rest). The experiments comprised two sessions. During session I (first three repetitions of exercise and rest) the subjects were exposed to an indifferent wind velocity and during session II (last three repetitions of exercise and rest) they were exposed to a wind velocity of 1.5 m · s−1. Rectal temperature and skin temperatures at eight sites, pulse rate and clothing microclimate were recorded throughout the whole period. The main findings can be summarized as follows: rectal temperature during session II was kept at a significantly lower level in A than in B and C. Clothing microclimate humidity at the chest was significantly lower in A than in B and C during session II. Skin and clothing microclimate temperatures at the chest were significantly lower in A than in B and C during session II. Pulse rate was significantly higher in C than in A and B during sessions I and II. It was concluded that the hydrophilic properties of the fabrics studied were of physiological significance for reducing heat strain during exercise and rest especially when influenced by wind. Objective: Dietary zinc repletion can ameliorate sucrose‐induced obesity. A positive correlation between zinc and leptin has been recently noted, and both are known as important mediators in appetite control. In this study, we examined whether the reported amelioration of sucrose‐induced obesity by zinc repletion was consequent on the changes in circulating leptin levels. Research Methods and Procedures: Mice with obesity that was induced by giving a 32% sucrose solution in addition to a semipurified diet were divided into two groups based on whether they had 20 mg/liter zinc supplementation in their drinking water. Results: As expected, the mice with sucrose‐induced obesity had hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, hypertriglyceridemia, hyperleptinemia, and hypozincemia when compared with the mice given the diet alone. Body weight gain, body fat content, and food and sucrose intake tended to decrease but not with statistical significance in sucrose‐fed obese mice with zinc supplementation. Nevertheless, some serum variables (glucose, insulin, triglycerides, and zinc) in sucrose‐fed obese mice with zinc treatment were approximate to those values of the mice given the diet alone. Moreover, sucrose‐fed obese mice with zinc supplementation had the highest serum values of leptin. Discussion: This study indicates that the amelioration of sucrose‐induced obesity by zinc repletion may be partly attributable to the hyperleptinemia induced by the mineral.  相似文献

Abstract. The distribution of chlorophyll fluorescence was measured within leaves of Medicago saliva with a fibre optic microprobe. Leaves were irradiated with broad band blue light (1000 μmol m−2s−1) and chlorophyll fluorescence was measured at 688 nm. The amount of fluorescence measured within the leaf depended upon the direction in which the probe was inserted. When the probe was advanced directly through the leaf from the shaded towards the irradiated surface, the maximum amount of detected fluorescence occurred near the boundary between the palisade and spongy mesophyll. When the probe was advanced through the leaf from the opposite direction maximum detected fluorescence was at the boundary between the epidermis and palisade. These results appear to be a consequence of the blue light gradient, which declined exponentially within the palisade but was counterbalanced by increasing chlorophyll content within the leaf. Modelling indicates that the measured distribution of chlorophyll fluorescence can be explained by relatively uniform emission of fluorescence throughout the palisade layer, indicating that the chloroplasts may be photosynthetically specialized to their light environment within the leaf.  相似文献
