The sterile insect technique (SIT) is used to control Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), but its effectiveness is limited by low sexual competitiveness of mass‐reared males. This study investigated whether wild and mass‐reared [from a temperature sensitive lethal (tsl) genetic sexing strain] females display similar mate preferences and thus exert similar selective forces on the evolution of male courtship behaviour. Wild females preferred wild males over tsl males, whereas tsl females mated indiscriminately. The probability that mounting resulted in copulation was related to the duration of pre‐mount courtship for wild females, and wild males performed longer courtships than tsl males. Copulation occurred independently of courtship duration in tsl females. Counter to the aim of the SIT, female choice by tsl females appears to promote the evolution of male behaviour disfavoured by wild females.

Male moths locate conspecific females by pheromone‐induced upwind flight maintained by detecting a visual flow, termed optomotor anemotaxis. Their behavioural pattern is characterized by an upwind surge in response to a pheromone stimulus and crosswind casting after odour loss, which is considered to be reset and restarted on receipt of another pheromone pulse. However, pheromone‐stimulated males of the potato tuberworm moth Phthorimaea operculella exhibit a series of short and straight intermittent flights, or hops, when moving upwind. It is unclear whether they navigate by employing the same behavioural pattern and wind detection mechanism as that used by flying moths. To analyze odour‐modulated anemotaxis in male potato tuberworm moths, a flat wind tunnel is constructed to give regular odour stimuli to an insect regardless of its location. Moths are subjected to pheromone pulses of different frequencies to test whether they show a behavioural pattern that is reset and restarted by a pheromone pulse. Moths on the ground are also subjected to crosswind shear to examine their detection of wind direction. Path analyses reveal that males surge upwind when they receive a pheromone pulse and exhibit casting by successive hops when they lose odour. This behavioural pattern appears to be similar to that of flying moths. When the direction of the airflow is switched orthogonally, males adjust their course angle accordingly when they are on the ground. It is suggested that, instead of optomotor anemotaxis, this ‘aim‐then‐shoot’ system aids the detection of wind direction, possibly by mechanosensory means.

Animals must contend with an ever-changing environment. Social animals, especially eusocial insects such as ants and bees, rely heavily on communication for their success. However, in a changing environment, communicated information can become rapidly outdated. This is a particular problem for pheromone trail using ants, as once deposited pheromones cannot be removed. Here, we study the response of ant foragers to an environmental change. Ants were trained to one feeder location, and the feeder was then moved to a different location. We found that ants responded to an environmental change by strongly upregulating pheromone deposition immediately after experiencing the change. This may help maintain the colony''s foraging flexibility, and allow multiple food locations to be exploited simultaneously. Our treatment also caused uncertainty in the foragers, by making their memories less reliable. Ants which had made an error but eventually found the food source upregulated pheromone deposition when returning to the nest. Intriguingly, ants on their way towards the food source downregulated pheromone deposition if they were going to make an error. This may suggest that individual ants can measure the reliability of their own memories and respond appropriately.

Abstract.  1. Interactions among predators may influence the total efficiency of a predator complex. The effect of intra- and interspecific interactions of the generalist predators Orthotylus marginalis (Heteroptera: Miridae) and Anthocoris nemorum (Heteroptera: Anthocoridae) was investigated in a laboratory experiment. Outcomes of the interactions were determined by comparing predation rates on eggs and larvae of the blue willow beetle Phratora vulgatissima of single individuals with those of two individuals of the same or different species.
2. A non-additive, antagonistic effect on predation rates due to intraspecific interactions was found between individuals of A. nemorum . No such effect was found in O. marginalis . These results are as expected as a consequence of differences in behaviour of the two predator species: A. nemorum is a much more active and mobile predator than O. marginalis .
3. Contrary to expectation, interspecific interactions between A. nemorum and O. marginalis did not affect the total predation rate.
4. An observation from the field corroborated the results obtained in the laboratory study; there was no negative relationship between the densities of the two predator species, indicating that the two species do not interact negatively in the field at their natural densities.
5. It is concluded that the additive effect of multiple predator species is of potential value in biological control.

The metabolism of succinate was examined in the housefly Musca domestica L. The labeled carbons from [2,3-14C]succinate were readily incorporated into cuticular hydrocarbon and internal lipid, whereas radioactivity from [1,4-14C]succinate was not incorporated into either fraction. Examination of the incorporation of [2,3-14C]succinate, [1-14C]acetate, and [U-14C]proline into hydrocarbon by radio-gas-liquid chromatography showed that each substrate gave a similar labeling pattern, which suggested that succinate and proline were converted to acetyl-CoA prior to incorporation into hydrocarbons. Carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance showed that the labeled carbons from [2,3-13C]succinate enriched carbons 1, 2, and 3 of hydrocarbons with carbon-carbon coupling showing that carbons 2 and 3 of succinate were incorporated as an intact unit. Radio-high-performance liquid chromatographic analysis of [2,3-14C]succinate metabolism by mitochondrial preparations showed that in addition to labeling fumarate, malate, and citrate, considerable radioactivity was also present in the acetate fraction. The data show that succinate was not converted to methylmalonate and did not label hydrocarbon via a methylmalonyl derivative. Malic enzyme was assayed in sonicated mitochondria prepared from the abdomens and thoraces of 1- and 4-day-old insects; higher activity was obtained with NAD+ in mitochondria prepared from thoraces, whereas NADP+ gave higher activity with abdomen preparations. These data document the metabolism of succinate to acetyl-CoA and not to a methylmalonyl unit prior to incorporation into lipid in the housefly and establish the role of the malic enzyme in this process.

Starvation, chilling, and injury of last instar Galleria mellonella larvae typically elicit extra larval molts or a delay in pupation. The primary sites of action and the nature of the signals by which these treatments affect development are not known. However, since the connections of the brain to the nerve cord are crucial for the effects of starvation and chilling, these signals apparently affect the brain-centered program of developmental regulation via the nerve cord. Chilling, and occasionally starvation, cause extra larval molts in last instar larvae treated prior to the nervous inhibition of their corpora allata; release of a cerebral allatotropin, which stimulates the production of juvenile hormone, appears to be involved in this effect. After this time, a delay in pupation is the principal effect of starvation and chilling, and is apparently due to a temporal inhibition of the release of the prothoracicotropic hormone. Chilling also appears to inhibit unstimulated ecdysteroid production by the prothoracic glands. The effect of injury is not mediated by the nerve cord, but appears to involve an inhibitory humoral factor that affects either the brain or the prothoracic glands themselves. Injury also stimulates juvenile hormone production, an effect which is enhanced when the brain is separated from the nerve cord and which is evidenced by a delay of ecdysis and the occasional retention of some larval features in the ecdysed insects. None of the effects of these various treatments on the brain and the endocrine glands persist when the brains or glands are implanted into untreated hosts.

The olfactory response from male pheromone sensitive sensilla was investigated in the endemic New Zealand brownheaded leafrollers Ctenopseustis obliquana (Walker) and C. sp. ropeana (Lepidoptera, Tortricidae). The responses from 281 sensilla from the parental strains and from both the reciprocal crosses, including F1, F2 and maternal and paternal backcrosses were recorded, and statistically analysed using a multivariate analysis. In males of both the parental strains, a large amplitude cell responded to the main pheromone component of the conspecific female, in C. obliquana (Z)-8-tetradecenyl acetate (Z8-14:OAc) and in C. sp ropeana (Z)-5-tetradecenyl acetate (Z5-14:OAc). Both male types also possessed a small amplitude cell, which in C. obliquana responded weakly to Z5-14:OAc and tetradecyl acetate (14:OAc), and in C. sp ropeana responded to Z8-14:OAc. The responses from the different types of hybrid males were more variable than the responses from parental males. A main pattern could, however be seen, corresponding with the expected pattern in a sex-linked inheritance on the Z-chromosome of a C. sp ropeana type dominant genetic factor. The more pronounced variation in the hybrids could not be explained by this model, and might be due to the involvement of additional genes.

As shown by chemical analysis and field trapping, the sex pheromone of Grapholita lobarzewskii consists of a blend of (E)-8-dodecenyl acetate and (Z)-8-dodecenyl acetate. Maximum attractiveness was found at 80–95%. Dodecyl acetate and tetradecyl acetate, both present in the female gland, did not affect trap catch. G. lobarzewskii has recently gained importance as a pest of apple and plum, but has so far been referred to as Grapholita janthinana. The latter is attracted to the same two compounds, but in reversed portions (20% E).
