In a series of 188 experiments on the, light-saturation curve for natural assemblages of phytoplankton at 3 stations in Nova Scotia coastal waters, it was found that both the initial slope (α) of the curve and the assimilation number (PmB) varied about 5-fold throughout the year. No differences could be detected between stations, but both α and PmB decreased with depth. The mean value of α for all the experiments was 0.21 mg C[mg Chl a]?1· h?1· W?1· m2 with a range from 0.03 to 0.63. An explanation is offered for the nonconstancy of a in terms of the effect of cell-size and shape on self-shading. An estimate is made from first principles of the physiological maximum-attainable value of α. This estimate corresponds, within the limits of experimental error, to the highest values of α observed in the study. It is deduced that on the average the phytoplankton were photosynthesizing at only 44% maximum capacity. The mean value of PmB for all experiments was 4.9 mg C[mg Chl a]?1· h?1, with a range from 0.73 to 24.8. In the matrix of partial correlation coefficients, α and PmB were positively correlated with each other; α was correlated with mean solar radiation averaged over the 3 days prior to the experiment, but uncorrelated with temperature; PmB was correlated strongly with temperature but uncorrelated with recent solar radiation. The results show that PmB could be estimated from α and temperature using an empirical multiple regression equation, independent of depth. It is suggested that α and PmB are both correlated with some other factor not measured in the study, perhaps the mean cell-size of the populations, or the nutrient status of the cells. The predictability of primary production is discussed in the light of this evidence.  相似文献

Local populations of Sulfolobus islandicus diverge genetically with geographical separation, and this has been attributed to restricted transfer of propagules imposed by the unfavorable spatial distribution of acidic geothermal habitat. We tested the generality of genetic divergence with distance in Sulfolobus species by analyzing genomes of Sulfolobus acidocaldarius drawn from three populations separated by more than 8000 km. In sharp contrast to S. islandicus, the geographically diverse S. acidocaldarius genomes proved to be nearly identical. We could not link the difference in genome conservation between the two species to a corresponding difference in genome stability or ecological factors affecting propagule dispersal. The results provide the first evidence that genetic isolation of local populations does not result primarily from properties intrinsic to Sulfolobus and the severe discontinuity of its geothermal habitat, but varies with species, and thus may reflect biotic interactions that act after propagule dispersal.  相似文献

A direct relationship exists between soil temperature and Heterodera schachtii development. The average developmental period of two nematode populations from Lewiston, Utah, and Rupert, Idaho, from J2 to J3, J4, adult, and the next generation J2 at soil temperatures of 18-28 C were 100, 140,225, and 399 degree-days (base 8 C), respectively. There was a positive relationship (P < 0.05) between nematode Pi, nematode generations, and sugarbeet yields. The greatest sugarbeet growth inhibition (87%) occurred when sugarbeets were exposed to a Pi of 12 eggs/cm³ soil for five generations (1,995 degree-days), compared with a 47% inhibition when plants were exposed to the same Pi for two generations. There was a negative correlation (P < 0.05) between the Pi, Pf, and sugarbeet yield for each population threshold. The smaller the Pi, the greater the sugarbeet yields and the greater the Pf. Root yields were 80 and 29 t /ha and Pf were 8.4 and 3.6 eggs/cm³ soil when sugarbeet seeds were planted at Pi of 0.4 and 7.9 eggs/cm³. respectively, at a soil temperature of 8 C. The number of years rotation with a nonhost crop required to reduce the nematode population density below a damage threshold level of 2 eggs/cm³ depends on the Pi. A Pi of 33.8 eggs/cm³ soil required a 5-year crop rotation, whereas a Pi of 8.4 eggs/cm³ soil required a 2-year crop rotation.  相似文献

Many heavy metals inhibit electron transfer reactions in Photosystem II (PSII). Cd2+ is known to exchange, with high affinity in a slow reaction, for the Ca2+ cofactor in the Ca/Mn cluster that constitutes the oxygen-evolving center. This results in inhibition of photosynthetic oxygen evolution. There are also indications that Cd2+ binds to other sites in PSII, potentially to proton channels in analogy to heavy metal binding in photosynthetic reaction centers from purple bacteria. In search for the effects of Cd2+-binding to those sites, we have studied how Cd2+ affects electron transfer reactions in PSII after short incubation times and in sites, which interact with Cd2+ with low affinity. Overall electron transfer and partial electron transfer were studied by a combination of EPR spectroscopy of individual redox components, flash-induced variable fluorescence and steady state oxygen evolution measurements. Several effects of Cd2+ were observed: (i) the amplitude of the flash-induced variable fluorescence was lost indicating that electron transfer from YZ to P680+ was inhibited; (ii) QA to QB electron transfer was slowed down; (iii) the S2 state multiline EPR signal was not observable; (iv) steady state oxygen evolution was inhibited in both a high-affinity and a low-affinity site; (v) the spectral shape of the EPR signal from QAFe2+ was modified but its amplitude was not sensitive to the presence of Cd2+. In addition, the presence of both Ca2+ and DCMU abolished Cd2+-induced effects partially and in different sites. The number of sites for Cd2+ binding and the possible nature of these sites are discussed.  相似文献

Data on quantities of glasseels and elvers caught at 11 stations on the western and northern coast of Europe together with abundance indices for glass eels at Den Oever, Netherlands and for larvae in the Bay of Biscay are presented covering the period 1924 to 1988. Large catches were made in the 1960's and 1970's followed by a sudden and widespread, but not universal, decline in the 1980's. Catches within years between stations showed significant correlations in some cases but not in all.  相似文献

In September 2020, Project South, along with numerous other organizations, released a report detailing abuses in a Georgia Detention Center – including forced hysterectomies. Whatever other factors are at play, one of them is an intrinsic connection between obstetric violence against pregnant migrants and immigration injustice. It is not incidental that these acts – in US detention centers, along the US-Mexico border, in Colombian hospitals and clinics – are being perpetrated on immigrant bodies. And it is not accidental or random which immigrant bodies are vulnerable to these violations. Understanding and confronting obstetric violence directed at pregnant migrants, though, requires reconceptualizing the nature of obstetric violence itself. In particular, we must recognize that obstetric violence against pregnant Latin American migrants in the United States and Colombia is a type of immigration injustice, a means to perpetrate immigration injustice, and a product of immigration injustice. As such, bioethicists need to collaborate with immigration scholars to resist it. After providing some background on the nature of obstetric violence and some ways it is perpetuated against pregnant migrants in the United States and Colombia, I will give a brief overview of how I conceptualize immigration justice. From there, I explain how this type of obstetric violence constitutes a type of immigration injustice, a means to perpetrate immigration injustice, and a product of immigration injustice. My hope is that this analysis motivates bioethicists throughout the Americas to engage with immigration scholars and activists to confront the issue more forcefully.  相似文献

An autoradiographic study of the incorporation of [3H] thymidine into nuclei of cambial initials in stems of Lycopersicon esculentum has permitted the identification of subpopulations of cambial cells with differing rates of turnover.
