The collection of data on physical parameters of body segments is a preliminary critical step in studying the biomechanics of locomotion. Little data on nonhuman body segment parameters has been published. The lack of standardization of techniques for data collection and presentation has made the comparative use of these data difficult and at times impossible. This study offers an approach for collecting data on center of gravity and moments of inertia for standardized body segments. The double swing pendulum approach is proposed as a solution for difficulties previously encountered in calculating moments of inertia for body segments. A format for prompting a computer to perform these calculations is offered, and the resulting segment mass data for Lemur fulvus is presented.  相似文献

A temporally continuous and spatially discrete stochastic model for the spread of an epidemic within some set of holdings is constructed. A recursion formula is given for the probability that a certain set of holdings is infected at a certain moment. Electric field induced light scattering by suspensions of cation-depleted purple membranes, obtained by deionization of purple membrane (PM) suspensions on a cation exchange column or by electrodialysis at a pH around 6, shows a strong drop (more than 5 times) in the value of the permanent dipole moment relative to that of PM fragments. The membrane dipole moments were measured both at low dc and ac electric fields as well as by using electric field pulses with reversing polarity. Some slight changes in the dispersion of the electric polarizability were also observed.Microelectrophoretic measurements showed that the electric charge of the membrane fragments is increased by 30% after deionization. The importance of these data for the understanding of the blue membrane properties and subsequently for the mechanism of proton pumping are discussed.  相似文献

Tail moments in the single cell gel electrophoresis (comet) assay usually do not follow a normal distribution, making the statistical analysis complicated. Researchers have used a wide variety of statistical techniques in an attempt to overcome this problem. In many cases, the tail moments follow a bimodal distribution that can be modeled with a mixture of gamma distributions. This bimodality may be due to cells being in two different stages of the cell cycle at the time of treatment. Maximum likelihood, modified to accommodate censored data, can be used to estimate the five parameters of the gamma mixture distribution for each slide. A weighted analysis of variance on the parameter estimates for the gamma mixtures can be performed to determine differences in DNA damage between treatments. These methods were applied to an experiment on the effect of thymidine kinase in DNA damage and repair. Analysis based on the mixture of gamma distributions was found to be more statistically valid, more powerful, and more informative than analysis based on log-transformed tail moments.  相似文献
