Postcopulatory processes might play an important role in sexualselection. In theory, fertilization success could be controlledby females via selection of particular sperm within their reproductivetract, or it could be determined by sperm competition per se.In practice, these two mechanisms are difficult to disentangle.To assess the relative importance of both mechanisms we usedartificial insemination in combination with measurements ofsperm quality (swimming speed and motility) in mallards. Inthis species, females often lack behavioral control over copulationsand hence may use postcopulatory mechanisms to optimize theirreproductive output. One important factor affecting female fitnessmay be selection of genetically compatible males. To investigatethe influence of sperm quality and parental relatedness on paternitywe inseminated 12 groups of related females with a sperm mixturecontaining equal numbers of sperm from a brother and from anunrelated male. Paternity was independent of the relatednessof the siring male to the female but was significantly affectedby long-term sperm swimming speed and motility. No interactionbetween relatedness and sperm quality on paternity was observed.These results suggest that female mallards are not able to selectsperm on a purely genetic basis and emphasize the importanceof sperm quality in gaining paternity.  相似文献

This paper compares two well-known arguments in the units of selection literature, one due to , the other due to . Both arguments concern the legitimacy of averaging fitness values across contexts and making inferences about the level of selection on that basis. The first three sections of the paper shows that the two arguments are incompatible if taken at face value, their apparent similarity notwithstanding. If we accept Sober and Lewontin's criterion for when averaging genic fitnesses across diploid genotypes is illegitmate, we cannot accept Sober and Wilson's criterion for when averaging individual fitnesses across groups is illegitimate, and vice versa. The final section suggests a possible way of reconciling the two arguments, by invoking an ambiguity in the concept of genic selection.  相似文献

During insemination, males of internally fertilizing speciestransfer a complex array of seminal fluid proteins to the femalereproductive tract. These proteins can have profound effectson female reproductive physiology and behavior and are thoughtto mediate postcopulatory sexual selection and intersexual conflict.Such selection may cause seminal fluid to evolve rapidly, withpotentially important consequences for speciation. Here we investigatethe evolution of seminal fluid proteins in a major mammalianradiation, the muroid rodents, by quantifying diversity in seminalfluid proteome composition for the first time across a broadrange of closely related species. Using comparative proteomicstechniques to identify and cross-match proteins, we demonstratethat rodent seminal fluid is highly diverse at the level ofboth proteomes and individual proteins. The striking interspecificheterogeneity in seminal fluid composition revealed by our surveyfar exceeds that seen in a second proteome of comparable complexity,skeletal muscle, indicating that the complement of proteinsexpressed in seminal fluid may be subject to rapid diversification.We further show that orthologous seminal fluid proteins exhibitsubstantial interspecific variation in molecular mass. Becausethis variation cannot be attributed to differential glycosylationor radical differences in termination sites, it is stronglysuggestive of rapid amino acid divergence. Sperm competitionis implicated in generating such divergence for at least onemajor seminal fluid protein in our study, SVS II, which is responsiblefor copulatory plug formation via transglutaminase-catalyzedcross-linking after insemination. We show that the molecularmass of SVS II is positively correlated with relative testissize across species, which could be explained by selection foran increased number of cross-linking sites involved in the formationof the copulatory plug under sperm competition.  相似文献

Structural class characterizes the overall folding type of a protein or its domain. A number of computational methods have been proposed to predict structural class based on primary sequences; however, the accuracy of these methods is strongly affected by sequence homology. This paper proposes, an ensemble classification method and a compact feature-based sequence representation. This method improves prediction accuracy for the four main structural classes compared to competing methods, and provides highly accurate predictions for sequences of widely varying homologies. The experimental evaluation of the proposed method shows superior results across sequences that are characterized by entire homology spectrum, ranging from 25% to 90% homology. The error rates were reduced by over 20% when compared with using individual prediction methods and most commonly used composition vector representation of protein sequences. Comparisons with competing methods on three large benchmark datasets consistently show the superiority of the proposed method.  相似文献

We model the optimal foraging strategies for 2 nectarivore species,differing in the length of their proboscis, that exploit thenectar provided by 2 types of flowers, differing in the depthsof their corollas. When like flowers appear in clumps, nectarivoresmust decide whether to forage at a patch of deep or shallowflowers. If nectarivores forage optimally, at least one flowertype will be used by a single nectarivore species. Long-tonguedforagers will normally visit deep flowers and short-tonguedforagers shallow flowers, although extreme asymmetries in metaboliccosts may lead to the opposite arrangement. When deep and shallowflowers are randomly interspersed, nectarivores must decide,on encounter with a flower, whether to collect its nectar orcontinue searching. At low nectarivore densities, the optimalstrategy involves exploiting every encountered flower; however,as nectarivore densities increase and resources become scarce,long-tongued individuals should start concentrating on deepflowers and short-tongued individuals on shallow flowers. Therefore,regardless of the spatial distribution of flowers, corolla depthcan determine which nectarivore species exploit the nectar fromeach flower type in a given community. It follows that corollaelongation can evolve as a means to keep nectar thieves at bayif short-tongued visitors are less efficient pollinators thanlong-tongued visitors.  相似文献

A large-scale transformation procedure handling an adequate number of stable transformants with highly efficient positive-negative selection is a necessary prerequisite to successful gene targeting by homologous recombination, as the integration of a transgene by somatic homologous recombination in higher plants has been reported to be 10-3 to 10-5 compared with random integration by non-homologous end joining. We established an efficient and large-scale Agrobacterium-mediated rice transformation protocol that generated around 103 stable transformants routinely from 150 seeds and a strong positive-negative selection procedure that resulted in survivors at 10-2 using the gene for diphtheria toxin A fragment as a negative marker. Stegosaurian dinosaurs have a quadrupedal stance, short forelimbs, short necks, and are generally considered to be low browsers. A new stegosaur, Miragaia longicollum gen. et sp. nov., from the Late Jurassic of Portugal, has a neck comprising at least 17 cervical vertebrae. This is eight additional cervical vertebrae when compared with the ancestral condition seen in basal ornithischians such as Scutellosaurus. Miragaia has a higher cervical count than most of the iconically long-necked sauropod dinosaurs. Long neck length has been achieved by ‘cervicalization’ of anterior dorsal vertebrae and probable lengthening of centra. All these anatomical features are evolutionarily convergent with those exhibited in the necks of sauropod dinosaurs. Miragaia longicollum is based upon a partial articulated skeleton, and includes the only known cranial remains from any European stegosaur. A well-resolved phylogeny supports a new clade that unites Miragaia and Dacentrurus as the sister group to Stegosaurus; this new topology challenges the common view of Dacentrurus as a basal stegosaur.  相似文献

Despite many decades of multilateral global efforts, a significant portion of the world population continues to be plagued with one or more mosquito‐vectored diseases. These include malaria and filariasis, as well as numerous arboviral‐associated illnesses, such as dengue and yellow fevers. The dynamics of disease transmission by mosquitoes is complex, and involves both vector competence and vectorial capacity. One area of intensive effort is the study of chemosensory‐driven behaviours in the malaria vector mosquito Anopheles gambiae Giles, the modulation of which is likely to provide opportunities for disease reduction. In this context, recent studies characterize a large divergent family of An. gambiae odorant receptors (AgORs) that play critical roles in olfactory signal transduction. This work facilitates high‐throughput, cell‐based calcium mobilization screens of AgOR‐expressing human embryonic kidney cells identifying a large number of conventional AgOR ligands, as well as the first nonconventional Orco (olfactory receptor co‐receptor) family agonist. As such, ligand‐mediated modulation serves as a proof‐of‐concept demonstration that AgORs represent viable targets for high‐throughput screening and for the eventual development of behaviour‐modifying olfactory compounds. Such attractants or repellents could foster malaria reduction programmes.  相似文献

Genomic selection (GS) has been implemented in animal and plant species, and is regarded as a useful tool for accelerating genetic gains. Varying levels of genomic prediction accuracy have been obtained in plants, depending on the prediction problem assessed and on several other factors, such as trait heritability, the relationship between the individuals to be predicted and those used to train the models for prediction, number of markers, sample size and genotype × environment interaction (GE). The main objective of this article is to describe the results of genomic prediction in International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center''s (CIMMYT''s) maize and wheat breeding programs, from the initial assessment of the predictive ability of different models using pedigree and marker information to the present, when methods for implementing GS in practical global maize and wheat breeding programs are being studied and investigated. Results show that pedigree (population structure) accounts for a sizeable proportion of the prediction accuracy when a global population is the prediction problem to be assessed. However, when the prediction uses unrelated populations to train the prediction equations, prediction accuracy becomes negligible. When genomic prediction includes modeling GE, an increase in prediction accuracy can be achieved by borrowing information from correlated environments. Several questions on how to incorporate GS into CIMMYT''s maize and wheat programs remain unanswered and subject to further investigation, for example, prediction within and between related bi-parental crosses. Further research on the quantification of breeding value components for GS in plant breeding populations is required.  相似文献

We used DNA fingerprints to determine whether the population structure and colony composition of the cooperative social spider Stegodyphus dumicola are compatible with requirements of interdemic ('group') selection: differential proliferation of demes or groups and limited gene flow among groups. To investigate gene flow among groups, spiders were collected from nests at 21 collection sites in Namibia. Analysis of molecular variance showed a small but highly significant differentiation among geographic regions (ΦPT = 0.23, P  = 0.001). Thirty-three nests at four collection sites (6–10 spiders per nest, 292 individual spiders) were investigated in more detail to evaluate variation within and among colonies and among collection sites. In these 33 nests, an average of 15% of loci (fingerprint bands) were polymorphic among nestmates; 16% of observed variance was partitioned among collection sites, 48% among nests within a collection site, and 36% among individuals within nests. Spatial autocorrelation analyses of spiders at three collection sites showed that the maximum extent of detectable spatial autocorrelation among individuals was approximately 30 m, indicating dispersal over greater distances is not typical. These results indicate limited gene flow among nests, as well as spatial structuring at the level of regions, local populations, and nests, compatible with interdemic selection.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 97 , 235–246.  相似文献
