The present study focuses on the impact of age at menarche on body composition development during adulthood. With 459 healthy middle-class women between 18 and 67 years (x = 41.5) the association between age at menarche and body composition was tested. Body composition, described by absolute and relative amount of fat mass, lean body mass, and bone mass, was estimated by means of dual energy x-ray absorptiometry. In order to exclude the influence of the menopausal transition on body composition, pre- and postmenopausal females were examined separately. The absolute amount of body fat was significantly lower within the group of women whose menarche occurred later. However, postmenopausal females exhibit less significant relations between the two trait systems than premenopausal women. This may be due to the impact of menopausal transition which affected the hormone levels and body composition development independently from the adolescent hormonal transition. While in both proband groups the quantitative amount of body fat was significantly related to menarcheal age, a significant relation between menarcheal age and adult body fat distribution could not be verified. The low brachial and crural indices of the European Neandertals have long been considered indicative of cold adaptation. Recent work has documented lower limb/trunk ratios and deeper chests (anterior-posterior diameter) in European Neandertals than among their successors. The present study uses variables reflective of limb length, body mass and trunk height, and compares European Neandertals to 15 globally diverse recent human samples (1 “Eskimo,” 3 North African, 4 sub-Saharan African and 7 European). Bivariate plots, as well as principal components analysis plots of log shape-transformed data, indicate that European Neandertals had an overall body shape that falls at the extreme end of modern higher latitude groups' range of variation. Cluster analysis (minimum spanning tree on a principal coordinates plot) indicates that the Neandertals are closest in body shape to modern “Eskimos,” but even in this dendrogram, they are joined to the “Eskimo” via a long branch. In fact, it appears that European Neandertals were “hyperpolar” in body shape, likely due to two factors: 1) the extremely cold temperatures of glacial Europe and 2) less effective cultural buffering against cold stress. Fertilization of the mammalian egg initiates numerous biochemical and structural changes which remodel the egg into a single-celled zygote. To date, the most extensively studied phenomenon of fertilization in virtually all species has been the relationship between sperm penetration and the induction of the initial rise in intracellular-free calcium ([Ca2+]i) concentration within the egg. In contrast, relatively few studies have focused on the biochemical events following this rise in calcium, and even fewer studies have directly linked the biochemical events to the structural changes which must ensue for proper development of the embryo. In this study, we exploited recently developed technologies to investigate the action of protein kinase C (PKC), a presumed downstream transducer of the initial rise in [Ca2+]i, during fertilization and artificial activation with calcium ionophore or phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA). The newly developed myristoylated PKC pseudosubstrate (myrPKCΨ) was used to specifically inhibit PKC, thereby averting the trauma of injecting the egg with nonmyristoylated PKCΨ. Following fertilization, eggs which were pretreated with myrPKCΨ were not capable of forming a second polar body and pronuclear formation was significantly inhibited. Spatial and temporal localization of PKC using confocal microscopy to visualize the PKC reporter dye, Rim-1, demonstrated localization of PKC to the lateral aspects of the forming second polar body after fertilization, or after artificial activation with calcium ionophore or PMA. In vivo biochemical analysis of eggs which were fertilized or artificially activated demonstrated that PKC activity rose at the same time (40 min) as the second polar body formed and then subsided over the next 5 hr post activation. Changes in the specific and total activity of the lysosomal marker enzyme acid phosphatase (Acph) and in the amount of enzyme protein were examined in the fat body and the hemolymph from the last larval molt to the larval-pupal apolysis. The specific activity showed minor changes during the last larval period. In contrast, the total activity of the enzyme was low during the feeding period and higher during the wandering stage and strikingly increased at the time of puparium formation. We purified a protein having para-nitrophenyl phosphate phosphatase (Acph) activity and raised antisera against it. The amount of Acph protein in the fat body and hemolymph was examined using an ELISA. The specific Acph content showed little variation, but the total amount of the enzyme protein showed a stepwise increase in both organs during last larval stage and was markedly elevated in the pupal stage in the fat body. In contrast, a considerable decrease in the amount of Acph protein was observed in the hemolymph during this period. These data were in agreement with immunohistochemical observations showing an accumulation of the enzyme protein in fat body cells during the prepupal stage with a concomitant disappearance of the enzyme from the hemolymph. Inhibition of ecdysteroid secretion by water stress prevented the changes both in total enzyme activity and in the amount of Acph protein. However, Acph protein content and enzyme activity could be restored when the water stress was followed by a 20-hydroxyecdysone (20-HE) treatment. Taken together, our data show that Acph is secreted by fat body cells into the hemolymph during the larval stage, where it is stored in an inactive form. Increase in the 20-HE titer at the end of last larval stage reverses this process, and the enzyme is taken up by the fat body cells, where it becomes activated and appears in auto- and heterophagic vacuoles. Infant‐carrying behavior among callitrichids seems to be a costly activity. Costs have been related to the physical efforts of carrying the weight of very heavy infants and to the resulting reduction in foraging efficiency. However, the costs of carrying in terms of the physical consequences for carriers have not previously been assessed. In this study, we have regarded weight loss in infant carriers as a measure of costs. We studied five families of cotton‐top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus) during the first 9 weeks following the birth of infants. Captive‐breeding conditions were required so that body weight could be measured frequently. To avoid inflicting undue stress on the subject animals, we used a noninvasive method for weighing the tamarins. Differences in carrying contribution were found amongst fathers and male and female helpers, with female helpers contributing less. We have found that carrying infants in the cotton‐top tamarins is an activity that produces a weight loss. Fathers and male helpers go through a maximal body weight loss. While carrying, the tamarins also decrease food intake. However, no relationship was found between contribution to carrying and feeding time or in energetic intake during feeding observations. Thus, it seems that a direct relation doesn't exist between the observations of feeding and weight loss. Fathers increase their contribution to carrying during mothers' periovulatory periods. In this period, male helpers and especially fathers go through a maximal body weight loss. We found body weight losses of up to 11.3% in one subadult male and 9.1percnt; in a father during the fifth week. No changes occurred in food intake in fathers or other male helpers during this period. During periovulatory periods, mothers carried less frequently but did increase their food intake. They gained weight from the second week after birth onward, especially during the periovulatory period. It seems that the infant‐carrying behavior of fathers and male helpers may contribute to the improvement of the mothers' physical condition after birth and therefore may support a consecutive pregnancy. The structures of β-cyclodextrin inclusion complexes with 2-phenylethyl alcohol in vacuum and aqueous solution have been investigated by using molecular dynamics simulation. The inclusion structures and the physicochemical stability of the complexes were also analysed, discussed and validated by ultraviolet spectrums and thermodynamic properties. The results of molecular dynamics simulation indicate that the A-type β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex with 2-phenylethyl alcohol in both vacuum and aqueous solution have better physical stability, and its chemical stability also has obvious promotion than that of free one. Therefore, the β-cyclodextrin can be used to control and regulate the release of the 2-phenylethyl in food. 相似文献

Sibling cannibalism in aphidophagous ladybirds: its impact on sex-dependent development and body weight 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract: The effects of sibling egg cannibalism on sex-dependent development and adult body weight were determined by rearing simultaneously two groups of sibling larvae of ladybirds, viz. Propylea dissecta and Coccinella transversalis individually. The first group included cannibals (i.e. neonates, which took a sibling egg as the first meal and later fed on aphids, Aphis craccivora ) and the other included non-cannibals (reared exclusively on aphids). The cannibal larvae developed faster with heavier adults than non-cannibals. This expedited development and nutritional advantage (increased body weight) was greater in first instars indicating maximum benefit of sibling cannibalism to them. Sibling cannibalism was relatively more advantageous to male than to female ladybirds. Laboratory data predict that the larger size of adults in the field could possibly be the result of sibling egg cannibalism at the neonate level. 相似文献

Objective: The longitudinal relationship between the consumption of energy‐dense snack (EDS) foods and relative weight change during adolescence is uncertain. Using data from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Growth and Development Study, the current analysis was undertaken to examine the longitudinal relationship of EDS food intake with relative weight status and percentage body fat and to examine how EDS food consumption is related to television viewing. Research Methods and Procedures: One hundred ninety‐six nonobese premenarcheal girls 8 to 12 years old were enrolled between 1990 and 1993 and followed until 4 years after menarche. At each annual follow‐up visit, data were collected on percentage body fat (%BF), BMI z score, and dietary intake. Categories of EDS foods considered were baked goods, ice cream, chips, sugar‐sweetened soda, and candy. Results: At study entry, girls had a mean ± SD BMI z score of ?0.27 ± 0.89, consumed 2.3 ± 1.7 servings of EDS foods per day, and consumed 15.7 ± 8.1% of daily calories from EDS foods. Linear mixed effects modeling indicated no relationship between BMI z score or %BF and total EDS food consumption. Soda was the only EDS food that was significantly related to BMI z score over the 10‐year study period, but it was not related to %BF. In addition, a significant, positive relationship was observed between EDS food consumption and television viewing. Discussion: In this cohort of initially nonobese girls, overall EDS food consumption does not seem to influence weight status or fatness change over the adolescent period. 相似文献

"增强子陷阱"技术是建立果蝇脑全基因组表达图谱及其数据库的重要方法.筛选获得新特异表达的GAL4品系,可为进一步研究果蝇脑神经在学习记忆功能提供强有力的基因工具.通过"增强子陷阱"技术来获得果蝇突变体,并与报告转基因果蝇(UAS-EGFP)杂交,用荧光显微镜观察成年果蝇脑内荧光分布,从而获得该突变体的脑基因表达图谱,在此基础上利用JavaScript来建立果蝇脑全基因组表达数据库.目前获得基因突变体果蝇2 677种,大部分在果蝇脑中有表达,其中在果蝇嗅觉学习记忆相关脑区蘑菇体表达的基因有368个,且有部分基因特异地表达在某些传导通路上.这些果蝇基因突变体库及其表达图谱为进一步研究各基因的功能及作为遗传工具来研究各脑区结构和功能提供极大方便. 相似文献
