This review focuses on John Rex and Robert Moore's study of migrant settlement and community relations in the Sparkbrook area of Birmingham, UK in the early 1960s. The review argues that this study, now almost fifty years old, anticipated a number of the key themes that characterize and preoccupy the current debates on migration and complex urban communities such as migrant networks and social capital, super-diversity, patterns of residence and transnationlism. Central Asia has a land area of 5.6 × 106 km2 and contains 80–90% of the world's temperate deserts. Yet it is one of the least characterized areas in the estimation of the global carbon (C) stock/balance. This study assessed the sizes and spatiotemporal patterns of C pools in Central Asia using both inventory (based on 353 biomass and 284 soil samples) and process‐based modeling approaches. The results showed that the C stock in Central Asia was 31.34–34.16 Pg in the top 1‐m soil with another 10.42–11.43 Pg stored in deep soil (1–3 m) of the temperate deserts. They amounted to 18–24% of the global C stock in deserts and dry shrublands. The C stock was comparable to that of the neighboring regions in Eurasia or major drylands around the world (e.g. Australia). However, 90% of Central Asia C pool was stored in soil, and the fraction was much higher than in other regions. Compared to hot deserts of the world, the temperate deserts in Central Asia had relatively high soil organic carbon density. The C stock in Central Asia is under threat from dramatic climate change. During a decadal drought between 1998 and 2008, which was possibly related to protracted La Niña episodes, the dryland lost approximately 0.46 Pg C from 1979 to 2011. The largest C losses were found in northern Kazakhstan, where annual precipitation declined at a rate of 90 mm decade?1. The regional C dynamics were mainly determined by changes in the vegetation C pool, and the SOC pool was stable due to the balance between reduced plant‐derived C influx and inhibited respiration. 相似文献

Stocks of commercial fish are often modelled using sampling data of various types, of unknown precision, and from various sources assumed independent. We want each set to contribute to estimates of the parameters in relation to its precision and goodness of fit with the model. Iterative re-weighting of the sets is proposed for linear models until the weight of each set is found to be proportional to (relative weighting) or equal to (absolute weighting) the set-specific residual invariances resulting from a generalised least squares fit. Formulae for the residual variances are put forward involving fractional allocation of degrees of freedom depending on the numbers of independent observations in each set, the numbers of sets contributing to the estimate of each parameter, and the number of weights estimated. To illustrate the procedure, numbers of the 1984 year-class of North Sea cod (a) landed commercially each year, and (b) caught per unit of trawling time by an annual groundfish survey are modelled as a function of age to estimate total mortality, Z, relative catching power of the two fishing methods, and relative precision of the two sets of observations as indices of stock abundance. It was found that the survey abundance indices displayed residual variance about 29 times higher than that of the annual landings. 相似文献

Two brown trout Salmo trutta stocks of different origin (wild Polish, domestic commercial) came into secondary contact after deliberate releases conducted in virgin rivers systems of the Subantarctic Kerguelen Islands (70 degrees E 49 degrees S). Samples obtained in 2001-2003 and a historical sample from 1993 were analysed for genetic variation at seven microsatellite loci and one allozyme locus (LDH-C1*). Bayesian clustering analysis demonstrated that rapid genetic differentiation formed separate genetic units in neighbouring rivers in less than 20 years. These genetic units were characterized by a large proportion of Polish genotypes mixed with some genomes of domestic origin (up to 30%). A different colonization strategy of the naturalized stocks, likely related with differential performance, was identified as a cause of rapid population differentiation in this area. 相似文献

母猪繁殖力是影响种猪场经济效益的重要因素。文章对纯种大白猪、长白猪、杜洛克猪的8491窝产仔记录进行统计分析,建立固定效应模型对总产仔数、健仔数、初生窝重、弱仔数、死胎数、木乃伊胎数和畸形胎数共7个繁殖性状进行最小二乘分析,分析胎次、配种季节、品种对母猪繁殖性能的影响,同时比较了纯繁和杂交的效果。利用动物模型REML(约束最大似然)方法估计繁殖性状的遗传力和遗传相关。结果表明,胎次、配种季节和品种对总产仔数、健仔数、初生窝重影响极显著(P<0.001),胎次和品种对弱仔数影响极显著(P<0.001),但配种季节对弱仔数影响不显著。胎次对死胎数影响显著(P<0.05),而配种季节和品种对死胎数影响不显著,胎次、配种季节和品种对木乃伊胎、畸形胎数影响不显著。长白♂×大白♀交配组合具有最高的总产仔数、健仔数和初生窝重。繁殖性状遗传力估计结果显示,长白猪初生窝重的遗传力最高,为0.227。其余性状遗传力均在0.2以下,为低遗传力性状。3个品种母猪的健仔数与初生窝重、总产仔数与健仔数之间的遗传相关达0.96以上。研究结果为降低非传染性因素造成的种母猪产仔数低的问题以及种猪场对母猪繁殖力的选育提高提供了参考数据和理论依据。 相似文献
