Two parasitoids,Pteromalus cerealellae (Ashmead) andAnisopteromalus calandrae (Howard) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), were compared for their ability to parasitize two important internally-developing insect pests of stored maize (Zea mays L.). Parasitism byP. cerealellae was greater on Angoumois grain moth,Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier), than on maize weevil,Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky, in no-choice experiments.Anisopteromalus calandrae parasitized more maize weevils than didP. cerealellae. The former parasitoid parasitized only a few Angoumois grain moths successfully in maize, but parasitized many in wheat if the hosts were younger than 3 weeks old. Thus, both host age and type of grain affect suitability for parasitism. The effects of parental host (species on which the female developed) and experimental host (species exposed to parasitism) on parasitism rate ofP. cerealellae were tested in a host-switching experiment. Parasitism by parasitoids reared on maize weevils was 23% lower than that of parasitoids reared on Angoumois grain moth. This effect was independent of which host the filial generation of parasitoids was tested on. However, the experimental host species had a much greater effect on parasitoid fecundity than the parental host species. Female progeny had smaller body sizes when emerging from maize weevil than from Angoumois grain moth, which may explain the parental host effect on fecundity. There was also a slight intergenerational effect of host species on parasitoid body size.  相似文献

Encapsulation of Epidinocarsis lopezi (De Santis) (Hymenoptera, Encyrtidae) by the cassava mealybug Phenacoccus manihoti Matile-Ferrero (Homoptera, Pseudococcidae) was studied in the laboratory under controlled conditions (thermohygrometry and photoperiod as close as possible to field conditions): temperature, 26±1 °C; relative humidity, 80±10%; photoperiod, 12 h. Encapsulation began with melanin deposits forming on the parasitoid envelopes at different developmental stages: egg chorion and cuticle of L2 and L3 larvae. It led to the formation of an amorphous capsule from which parasitoids could occasionally escape. Encapsulation affected 26.7% of all parasitoids in solitary parasitism. There was a highly significant increase in the level of encapsulation (83.3%) in superparasitism. Encapsulation was more likely when egg laying occurred in the median body zone of host mealybugs but it was not related either to the sequence of eggs deposited or to the duration of egg laying. These results have significant implications for the assessment of E. lopezi parasitoid efficiency and should be considered in the current biological control program on P. manihoti in Africa.
Mélanisation et encapsulement des ufs et des larves d'Epidinocarsis lopezi par son hôte Phenacoccus manihoti: effets du superparasitisme et des modalités de la ponte
Résumé L'encapsulement d'Epidinocarsis lopezi (De Santis) (Hyménoptère, Encyrtidae) par la cochenille du manioc Phenacoccus manihoti Matile-Ferrero (Homoptère, Pseudococcidae) a été étudié au laboratoire en conditions standardisées de thermohygrométrie et de photopériode aussi proches que possible de celle existant sur le terrain: température: 26±1 °C; hygrométrie relative: 80±10%; photopériode: 12 heures.Le phénomène débute par un dépot de mélanine sur les enveloppes du parasitoïde à différents stades de son développement: chorion de l'uf ou cuticule des larves L2 et L3. Il aboutit à la formation d'une capsule amorphe dont le parasitoïde parvient parfois à s'échapper. L'encapsulement affectant 26,7% des individus en situation de parasitisme solitaire est très significativement augmenté dans le cas de superparasitisme où ce taux concerne jusqu'à 83,3% des Hyménoptères en développement mais dans ces situations de superparasitisme, un Hyménoptère adulte est toujours obtenu d'une cochenille infestée.L'encapsulement est par ailleurs favorisé lorsque la ponte du parasitoïde s'effectue dans la région médiane de la cochenille mais ne dépend pas du rang de ponte des ufs et de la durée de la piqûre.Nos résultats, confirmés par des travaux de terrain au Congo, indiquent qu'un tel taux d'encapsulement a une incidence sur l'efficacité parasitaire d'Epidinocarsis lopezi et qu'il doit être pris en considération dans le progamme de lutte biologique en cours en Afrique contre Phenacoccus manihoti.

Laboratory studies at 25.5 degrees C and 70-75% r.h. demonstrated that the average daily survival rate for females of the parasitoid Spalangia gemina Boucek (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) was 0.907 over a 20-day period, with 50% mortality in 17.3 days. Mean immature developmental time of S.gemina was 22 days and the population growth rate was c. 40-fold per generation. The females successfully parasitized 1-, 2- and 3-day-old pupae of Musca domestica L. and parasitism of 98-100% was obtained at parasitoid to host ratios of 1:0.5-2.5. Parasitism of 81-87% was obtained at parasitoid to host ratios of 1:10. The male to female sex ratio was 1:1.59. S.gemina appears to have advantages over other Spalangia spp., which have immature development times of 28-32 days under comparable conditions, for the biological control of Muscidae.  相似文献

The parasitoidEucelatoria bryani Sabrosky regulates the larval behavior of its hostHelicoverpa zea (Boddie). Parasitized third, fourth and fifth instars burrow into the soil 0.7–3.4 days earlier than unparasitized larvae that normally enter the soil to pupate at the end of the fifth and final larval instar. Parasitized third instars molt once then burrow as fourth instars, one instar earlier than normal. WhenE. bryani pupariated on the soil surface in the field, none survived to the adult stage. However,E. bryani adults emerged from 49.2% of hosts that had burrowed into the soil. By accelerating the timing ofH. zea burrowing behavior and causing host larvae to enter the soil before death,E. bryani ensures its pupariation in an environment with improved protection against natural enemies and lethal temperatures.  相似文献

Eucelatoria bryani Sabrosky (Diptera: Tachinidae) successfully parasitized 2nd through 5th instars and prepupal Heliothis zea (Boddie) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in the laboratory. Percent successful parasitism (that which resulted in the production of adult parasitoid progeny) increased with host developmental state, reaching 95% in 5th instars, but fell to 63% in prepupae. While 25% of the exposed prepupae metamorphosed to pupae, none developed into adults. E. bryani maggots emerged from only 5% of H. zea pupae. The mean number of fly puparia and adults produced per successfully parasitized larva increased with host stadium, reaching 14.5±1.33 (SEM) and 10.6±1.02, respectively, in prepupae. The sex ratio of adult parasitoid progeny per host larval stadium was variable, and did not appear to follow a pattern. A formula for calculating a host favorability index is presented. This index allows a direct comparison of the overall impact and reproductive potential of E. bryani attacking hosts of varying developmental states.
Résumé Les influences de l'état de développement de l'hôte sur le taux de parasitisme, la production de descendants, l'émergence des adultes et le taux sexuel de la techinaire E. bryani Sabrosky ont été examinés au laboratoire. Un parasitisme réussi,-qui entraîne la formation d'un parasitoïde adulte-, s'effectue dans les chenilles de stades 2 à 5 et dans les prénymphes d'Heliothis zea Boddie. II s'agit d'un élargissement considérable de la gamme connue des tailles convenables d'hôtes. Bien que le parasitisme n'ait jamais réussi avec les chenilles de premier stade, une très forte mortalité, 93% a été observée quand ces petites chenilles ont été exposées à la tachinaire. Pour permettre l'introduction par le larvipositeur des asticots dans la chenille, la mouche perfore la cuticule de l'hôte avec un sclérite modifié; ainsi, une grande partie de la mortalité est provoquée vraisemblablement par le traumatisme dû au parasitoïde. Le succès du parasitisme a augmenté en fonction du développement de l'hôte du second stade (30%) au cinquième stade (95%), pour tomber à 63% dans les prénymphes. Cependant, aucune des prénymphes exposées aux mouches n'a été capable de donner des papillons.Les production moyennes de pupes et de mouches par chenille effectivement parasitée ont augmenté avec le stade de développement de l'hôte pouratteindre dans les prénymphes respectivement 14,5±1,33 et 10,6±1,02. Le taux sexuel des mouches obtenues a été très variable pour les différents stades de développement des chenilles, sans qu'aucune corrélation ait pu être mise en évidence. Une formule permettant de calculer un indice d'adéquation de l'hôte est proposé. Cet indice permet une comparaison directe des impacts globaux et des potentiels reproducteurs des femelles de E. bryani attaquant des hôtes à différents stades.

The parasitoid functional response is regarded as central to host-parasitoid dynamics. If so, then the shape of this response may be related to parasitoid success in biological control programmes. We test this by reviewing the literature on the functional response together with the BIOCAT database. Only 32 out of 94 papers have dealt experimentally with the functional response of parasitoids used in biocontrol. The study suggests that most parasitoid species have a type II response. Also, there is no clear relationship between curve shape and success in control. We conclude that other aspects of the parasitoid behaviour deserve more attention in order to understand and predict these insects' success as control agents.  相似文献

  • 1 The horse‐chestnut leaf miner, Cameraria ohridella, is a moth of unknown origin that has recently invaded Europe and severely defoliates the European horse‐chestnut, an important ornamental tree.
  • 2 Several indigenous parasitoids have colonized this new host, but parasitism remains low. One of the hypotheses suggested to explain the low parasitism is that candidate parasitoids emerge too early in spring to attack the first host generation and, thus, need early‐occurring leaf miners as alternate hosts. This hypothesis was tested by observing the synchronization between the phenology of the moth and that of its main parasitoids, and by comparing parasitism rates and parasitoid richness in different environments with various levels of biological diversity.
  • 3 In spring, the bulk of the parasitoids emerge at least 5 weeks before the occurrence of the first suitable larvae of C. ohridella whereas most parasitoid adults reared outdoors die within 5 weeks after emergence.
  • 4 Parasitism rates and parasitoid richness do not increase with biological diversity, suggesting that most parasitoids attacking the first generation of C. ohridella do not come from alternate hosts. Parasitism does not increase later in the year in the subsequent generations, when host‐parasitoid synchronization becomes less critical.
  • 5 We conclude that, although the spring emergence of parasitoids is not synchronized with the phenology of C. ohridella, the parasitoids attacking the first generation are probably old or late‐emerging adults of the overwintering generation. The lack of synchronization is probably not the only reason for the poor recruitment of native parasitoids by C. ohridella.

The foraging behavior ofVenturia canescens, a solitary endoparasitoid of lepidopteran larvae, was investigated in the laboratory. FemaleVenturia canescens with a larger number of mature eggs to lay were found to have higher levels of superparasitism (measured as numbers of eggs laid per parasitized host). Increased parasitoid density was found to result in reduced levels of superparasitism by host-deprived (i.e.,undepleted) wasps. Females which had been allowed access to hosts before the experiment (depleted wasps) laid fewer eggs per parasitized host than undepleted wasps, although there was no significant difference in the levels of superparasitism among the depletion periods of 1, 2, 5, and 7 h. It was also found that an egg which was encountered less than 15 min after oviposition was much less likely to be avoided than one which was encountered after more than 15 min had elapsed.  相似文献
