The lepidopteran pests Plutella xylostella L. (Plutellidae) and Pieris rapae L. (Pieridae: Pierini) are responsible for major yield losses of cabbage, Brassica oleracea L. (Brassicaceae), in North Korea. Preliminary integrated pest management (IPM) programmes using economic thresholds (ETs) to schedule insecticide applications have proved promising and have demonstrated marked increases in yield compared to standard farming practice, which relies heavily on synthetic insecticides. To use ETs effectively on a routine basis, farmers need efficient yet sufficiently precise methods of surveying crops for pests. Here we construct and validate binomial sequential sampling plans for the two-species pest complex and for P. rapae alone. The recommended plans would be practical to implement, demanding maximum sample sizes below 50 plants, and proved very slightly conservative with respect to classifying the population relative to the ET (i.e., they were slightly more likely to suggest control at the ET than not). 相似文献

The marine hoplonemertean Oerstedia dorsalis is considered to be a highly polymorphic species with extensive geographic distribution. We show, based on mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I, 16S and nuclear internal transcribed spacer sequences, that there are genetic subsets withing this species. Seventy-one specimens of various colours from different geographic localities (in Europe) were sequenced and analysed using statistical parsimony and Bayesian analysis. Both analyses supported nine major clades. We conclude that O. dorsalis hides different species with geographic resolution. Burrowing worms that belong to Polydora spp. infest marine mollusks cultured worldwide, causing problems for production and marketing. The clam Chione fluctifraga is semi-cultured in Bahía Falsa, Baja California, NW Mexico, and some clams harbor burrowing worms. The present study was carried out to determine the identity of the worm species infesting the clam, the infesting process by cohabitation of infested and non-infested clams in aquaria with a variety of substrates (fine sand, gross sand, plastic bag used for clam culture, and aquarium without substrate) and turbulence conditions, and the occurrence of architomy phenomena in connection with infestation of the clam. The burrowing worm was considered as a nova species due to its singular limbate neurosetae and notosetae in the setiger 5, hooks in the setiger 6, eyes not present, and general pigmentation, among other characteristics. Infestation was similar in all substrates and turbulence conditions, but it was more abundant on clams previously infested than on those free of worms, showing a preferential settlement of worm infesting stages on pre-infested clams. Regeneration was observed in all segments of the worm: anterior (metastomium), medium, and posterior (prostomium); the complete regeneration time occurred in 40 days. This is the first record of architomy in a species of Polydora and this phenomenon could account for the increase of infestation intensity in pre-infested clams at the end of the study period. The solution structure of the central repetitive domain of high molecular weight (HMW) wheat gluten proteins has been investigated for a range of concentrations and temperatures using mainly small-angle neutron scattering. A representative part of the repetitive domain (dB1) was studied as well as an "oligomer" basically consisting of four dB1 units, which has a length similar to the complete central domain. The scattering data over the entire angular range of both proteins are in quantitative agreement with a structural model based on a worm-like chain, a model frequently used in polymer theory. This model describes the "supersecondary structure" of dB1 and dB4 as a semiflexible cylinder with a length of about 235 and 900 A, respectively, and a cross-sectional diameter of about 15 A. The flexibility of both proteins is characterized by a persistence length of about 13 A. Their structures are thus quantitatively identical, which implies that the central HMW domain can be elongated while retaining its structural characteristics. It seems conceivable that the flexible cylinder results from a helical structure, which resembles the beta-spiral observed in earlier studies on gluten proteins and elastin. However, compared to the previously proposed structure of a (stiff) rod, our experiments clearly indicate flexibility of the cylinder. 相似文献

Diseased Spodoptera littoralis larvae were collected from 21 different regions of Israel. Nuclear polyhedrosis viruses were isolated from these larvae, and viral DNAs were compared by restriction endonuclease analysis. Two distinct virus types, represented with approximately equal frequency, were found. Several wild isolates of each virus type exhibited minor restriction pattern differences. We compared the expression patterns of three representative genes in undamaged tomato and tobacco plants in response to exposure to either tomato or tobacco fed on by Helicoverpa armigera (cotton bollworm). When tomato and tobacco, two species of one family, were incubated in the chambers with the tomato plants damaged by the cotton bollworm, the expression of the PR1, BGL2, and PAL genes was up-regulated in leaves of both plants. However, the levels of gene expression were significantly higher in the tomato than that in the tobacco. In addition, the activities of enzymes, peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase, and lipoxygenase were found to be higher in the tomato than those in the tobacco. Persistence of sexual reproduction among coexisting asexual competitors has been a major paradox in evolutionary biology. The number of empirical studies is still very limited, as few systems with coexisting sexual and strictly asexual lineages have been found. We studied the ecological mechanisms behind the simultaneous coexistence of a sexually and an asexually reproducing closely related species of psychid moth in Central Finland between 1999 and 2001. The two species compete for the same resources and are often infected by the same hymenopteran parasitoids. They are extremely morphologically and behaviorally similar and can be separated only by their reproductive strategy (sexual vs. asexual) or by genetic markers. We compared the life-history traits of these species in two locations where they coexist to test predictions of the cost-of-sex hypothesis. We did not find any difference in female size, number of larvae, or offspring survival between the sexuals and asexuals, indicating that sexuals are subject to cost of sex. We also used genetic markers to check and exclude the possibility of Wolbachia bacteria infection inducing parthenogenesis. None of the samples was infected by Wolbachia and, thus, it is unlikely that these bacteria could affect our results. We sampled 38 locations to study the prevalence of parasitoids and the moths' reproductive strategy. We found a strong positive correlation between prevalence of sexual reproduction and prevalence of parasitoids. In locations where parasitoids are rare asexuals exist in high densities, whereas in locations with a high parasitoid load the sexual species was dominant. Spatial distribution alone does not explain the results. We suggest that the parasite hypothesis for sex may offer an explanation for the persistence of sexual moths in this system. 相似文献

Gastrointestinal nematode parasitism is a major burden to small ruminant production globally, compounded by increasing anthelmintic resistance. Previous studies have identified essential oils (EOs) from the Lippia genus with antiprotozoal and anthelmintic effects. Lippia dominguensis Moldenke (Ld), an endemic specie from the Dominican Republic, has similar popular uses, however, is chemically and pharmacologically yet uncharacterized. Here, we investigated the in vitro anthelmintic activity of LdEO and its ultrastructural effects on eggs and adult nematodes of Haemonchus contortus multidrug-resistant isolated. The GC/MS analysis showed linalool (33.85 %), 1,8-cineole (30.88 %), and δ-terpineol (10.61 %) as the main EO constituents. The LdEO showed an IC50=0.523 mg/mL in the egg hatch test, and the motility in the adult worm motility test was 95.8 % at 1 mg/mL. The confocal scanning laser microscopy of eggs indicated permeabilization or disruption of egg cell membranes as the possible mechanism of action of LdEO. The scanning electron microscopy of adult worms showed wrinkling, undulations, and cuticular disruptions. The LdEO displayed significant in vitro anthelmintic activity on eggs and adult worms of H. contortus. Additionally, the LdEO showed low oral toxicity in mice at 2,000 mg/kg. Thus, additional in vivo studies are justified to determine its anthelmintic efficacy in small ruminants. 相似文献

Partial resistance to an infection by cercariae of S. mansoni was induced in Sprague-Dawley rats by the surgical transfer into a mesenteric vein of live adult worms, recovered from infected mice by portal perfusion. A biological index, correlating with resistance, was sought in order to be used as a guide for developing an immunization protocol. Concurrent induction of peripheral eosinophilia and anti-worm antibodies in recipients of live worms correlated with induction of resistance to a subsequent cercarial infection. This response characteristic may provide a useful, preliminary index for screening worm antigen preparations intended for use in protective immunization protocols. 相似文献
