The warm oligo-eurytherm diatomsRhizosolenia robusta Norman andRhizosolenia imbricata Brightwell were cultured to determine the temperature range for the best competitive position by growth. Comparison of their generation times with those of other diatoms indicate thatR. robusta reaches this position around 20 °C andR. imbricata above 25 °C. The temperature ranges for growth were 12 °C up to 28 °C forR. robusta and 12 °C to above 30 °C forR. imbricata. The use of both species as indicator species for warm water currents is discussed on account of their lower temperature limit. The cold oligo-eurytherm diatomRhizosolenia shrubsolei had a temperature range for growth of below –1.0 °C to 25 °C. Our experimental results demonstrate thatR. imbricata andR. shrubsolei can be considered separate species. 相似文献

Background and purposePrimary dysmenorrhea is the most common gynaecologic problem in menstruating women and is characterized by spasmodic uterine contraction and pain symptoms associated with inflammatory disturbances. Paeonol is an active phytochemical component that has shown anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects in several animal models. The aim of this study was to explore whether paeonol is effective against dysmenorrhea and to investigate the potential mechanism of cannabinoid receptor signalling.Experimental approachDysmenorrhea was established by injecting oestradiol benzoate into female mice. The effects of paeonol on writhing time and latency, uterine pathology and inflammatory mediators were explored. Isolated uterine smooth muscle was used to evaluate the direct effect of paeonol on uterine contraction.Key resultsThe oral administration of paeonol reduced dysmenorrhea pain and PGE2 and TNF-α expression in the uterine tissues of mice, and paeonol was found to be distributed in lesions of the uterus. Paeonol almost completely inhibited oxytocin-, high potassium- and Ca2+-induced contractions in isolated uteri. Antagonists of CB2R (AM630) and the MAPK pathway (U0126), but not of CB1R (AM251), reversed the inhibitory effect of paeonol on uterine contraction. Paeonol significantly blocked L-type Ca2+ channels and calcium influx in uterine smooth muscle cells via CB2R. Molecular docking results showed that paeonol fits well with the binding site of CB2R.Conclusions and implicationsPaeonol partially acts through CB2R to restrain calcium influx and uterine contraction to alleviate dysmenorrhea in mice. Abstract Prescribed burning is regularly carried out by land management agencies controlling bushland estate in the Sydney region. Despite the volume of research into the interrelationships between fire and Australian ecosystems, season of burning has received comparatively little attention and is poorly understood. This paper considers three aspects of season of burning in the Sydney region, which is located on the boundary of the spring and spring-summer fire season zones, identified by Luke and McArthur (1978). First the paper reviews research on the responses of biota to fire season to establish what is known of the ecological importance of fire season. The historical records of fires in the early period of Sydney's settlement (1788–1845) are then used to determine the seasonal pattern of fire in that period, and the extent to which these records reflect Aboriginal practices which contributed to the historic fire regime. Recent prescribed burning is sampled through the practices of two major land management authorities in northern Sydney (New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service and Hornsby Shire Council) to compare current practices with the early records and the ecological evidence. The results of the very limited ecological research on season is far from conclusive. Positive and negative effects have been shown for both autumn and spring with autumn-winter perhaps showing the greater degree of negative impacts, although it is often difficult to separate the effects of season from intensity. The historic records show a pattern of fires, including those lit by Aborigines, largely confined to the fire season of spring-early summer (August to January). By contrast 60% of prescribed burning in northern Sydney by the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service and Hornsby Council from 1980 to 1995 was conducted in autumn-winter (April to July). Prescribed burning in summer cannot be considered for practical reasons but timing of prescribed burning at other seasons is also largely dictated by pragmatic factors such as suitable weather and availability of personnel. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare the delay in performance attributable to muscle elasticity in men and women. A group of 11 active young men age (mean, SE) 21.9, 0.7 years, stature 1.780, 0.020 m, body mass 76.4, 3.2 kg and 11 women age 20.9, 0.4 years, stature 1.670, 0.020 m and body mass 61.9, 2.6 kg provided written informed consent and were recruited to the study. In response to an acoustic signal delivered via headphones, the subjects performed a plantar flexion movement of the preferred leg as quickly as possible. A seated position ensured that the knee of the subject was flexed at a right angle and that the shank was vertical. The ball of the foot was on a force platform which was used detect the onset of muscle tension and the heel rested on a pressure pad which was used to identify movement. Surface electrodes sensed electromyographic activity (EMG) in the soleus muscle. Force platform output was captured by a digital storage oscilloscope and recorded via a y-t pen recorder or subsequent analysis. A separate timer was used to determine total reaction time (TRT). Premotor time (EMGT) was taken to be the time interval from the delivery of the signal to change in EMG. Electromechanical delay (EMD) was the time interval between the change in EMG and movement and was subdivided into force time (FT) i.e. the time interval between EMG and the onset of muscle tension and elastic charge time (CT) i.e. the time interval between the onset of muscle tension and movement. Saxifraga oppositifolia, S. biflora, and their hybridS. ×kochii were studied in a mixed population in the Swiss Alps. Qualitative morphological characters did not allow to clearly separate the hybridS. ×kochii from its parental species. All quantitative characters were intermediate inS. ×kochii, but the ranges of these characters overlapped with those ofS. oppositifolia andS. biflora. A hybrid index and canonical discriminant analysis allowed a clear separation of the three groups and strongly confirmed a priori grouping. Phenological observations showed that the three groups were not temporally separated within the investigated mixed population. Reciprocal hand pollinations betweenS. oppositifolia andS. biflora yielded higher seed set withS. oppositifolia than withS. biflora as maternal plant. Germination rate of seeds from these crossing experiments varied in the same way as seed yields, whereas germination rate was intermediate for seeds from naturally pollinatedS. ×kochii. Considering its ecological and reproductive properties,S. ×kochii has good prerequisites for evolving into a distinct species. 相似文献
