Seasonal changes in the physical state of crown water associated with freezing tolerance in winter wheat 总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9

The relationship between freezing tolerance (expressed as LT50, the lethal freezing temperature for 50% of plants) and the amount and physical state (as determined by spin-lattice [T1] and spin-spin [T2] relaxation times of protons) of water in crown tissue was examined in contrasting winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) varieties grown under field conditions from 1992 to 1994. During acclimation, the LT50 values decreased from around -7 to -17, -20 and -27°C in PI 173438, Chihokukomugi and Valuevskaya, respectively. Tissue water content decreased continuously through autumn to reach a plateau around 3 g H2O (g dry weight)-1 in early winter when LT50 was still decteasing, and then gradually increased under snow cover. A significant negative correlation was found between mean minimum air temperatures and freezing tolerance prior to the establishment of continuous snow cover. In contrast, a positive association between mean minimum temperatures and crown tissue water content was significant only when air temperatures were above 0°C, as water content did not decrease further at sub-zero temperatures. Seasonal changes in T1 were closely related to changes in freezing tolerance. T1 decreased until January even though water content stopped decreasing. Further tests on 15 field-grown varieties confirmed a strong negative association between freezing tolerance and T1. The results suggest that cold hardening is comprised of two stages, with the transition occurring at ca 0°C. Development of hardiness was related to (1) a reduction in water content in the first stage (at minimum temperatures > 0°C), and (2) a change in physical state of water without much reduction in water content in the second stage. A method of constructing trees for correlated failure times is put forward. It adopts the backfitting idea of classification and regression trees (CART) (Breiman et al., 1984, in Classification and Regression Trees). The tree method is developed based on the maximized likelihoods associated with the gamma frailty model and standard likelihood-related techniques are incorporated. The names of all the species of butterflies described by Linnaeus under "Papilio" are researched. Of the 305 names treated, 243 (c. 80%) are currently valid as specific (241) or subspecific (2), 29 are junior synonyms, 14 are invalid (one of these applying to a fake), and for 13 the identity is unknown or uncertain. Six species of moths misidentified by Linnaeus as butterflies are cited in the study, but details are not included. One hundred and fifty-two lectotypes have been designated, representing about 56% of the sum of the valid names and junior synonyms. Of these, 99 were selected from specimens in the Linnean Society of London, 52 from Queen Ludovica Ulrica's collection, Uppsala, and one lectotype is a Petiver specimen from the collection of Sir Hans Sloane. Linnaeus described at least five species, possibly eight, from the literature alone. All Linnaean material examined is documented, as are 'subsequent' specimens that are associated with Linnaean material. Synonymy and homonymy are discussed and presented, as are the identities of type localities. Care has been taken to achieve a practical balance between Linnaean and current species identities. Linnaean material studied included specimens from The Linnean Society of London, Museum Ludovicae Ulricae (Uppsala University), the Clerck and De Geer collections in the Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet, Stockholm, and the collection of James Petiver, now part of the collection of Sir Hans Sloane housed in The Natural History Museum, London. 相似文献

This study examined the time dependence effects of exposure to radiofrequency radiation (RFR) emitted by standard GSM cellular phones on the cognitive functions of humans. A total of 48 healthy right‐handed male subjects performed a spatial working memory task (that required either a left‐hand or a right‐hand response) while being exposed to one of two GSM phones placed at both sides of the head. The subjects were randomly divided into three groups. Each group was exposed to one of three exposure conditions: left‐side of the head, right‐side, or sham‐exposure. The experiment consisted of 12 blocks of trials. Response times (RTs) and accuracy of the responses were recorded. It was found that the average RT of the right‐hand responses under left‐side exposure condition was significantly longer than those of the right‐side and sham‐exposure groups averaged together during the first two time blocks. These results confirmed the existence of an effect of exposure on RT, as well as the fact that exposure duration (together with the responding hand and the side of exposure) may play an important role in producing detectable RFR effects on performance. The genus Fragaria (Rosaceae) contains 24 plant species, including hybrid species such as the octoploid garden strawberry (F. × ananassa). Natural hybridization between Fragaria species has repeatedly been reported, and the potential future cultivation of genetically modified strawberries has made the study of hybridization potential between F. × ananassa and its wild relatives increasingly important. In Europe, F. × ananassa is the only octoploid species present, and the most likely candidate for hybridization is the common diploid woodland strawberry (F. vesca). To date, it is unknown whether pollinator spectra of the two Fragaria species overlap and thus might promote interspecific gene flow. We carried out a survey of flower visitors in northwestern Switzerland to identify major flower visitors of F. vesca and F. × ananassa. This survey indicated that wild bees are the most important shared flower visitors of F. × ananassa and F. vesca. Therefore, we studied flower choice behavior of the common wild bee Osmia bicornis in a greenhouse experiment. Osmia bicornis did not discriminate between F. × ananassa and F. vesca flowers. We conclude that wild bees are important shared flower visitors of both F. × ananassa and F. vesca and are potential vectors for gene flow between cultivated and wild strawberries. 相似文献

A 2-D 1H NMR study (NOESY, COSY, HOHAHA and ROESY experiments) of the antifungal peptide stendomycin is presented. The variation of the NOESY cross peak intensities is measured as a function of temperature in order to discriminate between constant and fluctuating interproton distances. It is shown that among 71 NOESY cross peaks, only 12 correspond to well defined interproton distances and their correlation time is determined. The other cross peaks cannot be translated accurately in terms of distances owing to internal molecular motions. 1H}–13C nOe measurements confirm the internal mobility of the molecule. Finally a flexibility map of stendomycin can be established.

Aims To assess the role of moisture in phenological timing in the mediterranean coastal flora of Baja California, and specifically to assess the role of coastal fog and ocean-derived moisture in plant phenology. Moisture seems to be the primary driver of flowering times and durations at the arid end of the mediterranean-climate region, where rainfall is often sporadic (temperature and day length can be expected to play a much lesser role as they are not growth limiting). We aimed to understand: What factors drive climatic variation between sites? Are there general flowering patterns allowing us to identify phenological categories? Do flowering patterns vary in relation to site-specific weather? and most importantly, does maritime influence on weather affect flowering dynamics in coastal mediterranean ecosystems?Methods The southernmost extent of the California Floristic Province (in Baja California, Mexico) is a biological diversity hotspot of high endemism and conservation value, with two steep moisture gradients: rainfall (N–S) and coastal fogs (W–E), providing an ideal study system. We installed five weather stations across the moisture gradients, recording data hourly. We monitored flowering phenology in the square kilometer surrounding each weather station from 2010 to 2013. About 86 plant taxa were monitored across the five sites, every 6–8 weeks. Averaged climatic data is presented with general trends in flowering, and specific flowering syndromes were observed. Data for flowering intensity across the sites was analyzed using a principal components analysis.Important findings Data analysis demonstrates a general seasonal pattern in flowering times, but distinct differences in local weather and phenology between the five study sites. Three flowering syndromes are revealed in the flora: (i) water responders or spring bloomers, (ii) day-length responders or fall-blooming taxa and (iii) aseasonal bloomers with no seasonal affinity. The two moisture gradients are the strongest drivers of flowering times. Inland sites showed higher phenological variation than coastal sites where seasonality is dampened by ocean-derived moisture, which extends and buffers perennial plant phenology and is a probable driver of local endemism. Phenological controls vary globally with climate and geography; moisture is the primary driver of phenology in mediterranean climates and fog is an important climatic variable in coastal Mexico. 相似文献
