Boundaries between work and private life are diminishing, but little is known on how this influences worker health. Therefore, we examined the association between work-related contacts outside of regular working hours by e-mail or phone and self-reported health in a representative sample of European employees (n?=?23 760). The risk of reporting ≥1 health problem(s) was increased in workers contacted sometimes (odds ratio [OR]: 1.16, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.06–1.27) or often (OR: 1.23, 95% CI: 1.12–1.34) as compared with never, controlling for several demographic and workplace characteristics. Further research is needed to quantify work and nonwork patterns and their health effects.  相似文献

Little information is available concerning the efficacy of chelates applied to biosolids (sewage-sludge)-treated soil for heavy-metal removal. The purpose of the experiment was to determine the availability to sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) and hybrid poplar (Populus deltoides Marsh. × P. nigra L.) seedlings, of non-essential (Cd, Ni, Pb) and essential heavy metals (Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn) in field soil injected with biosolids since 1976 and treated with ethylenediamine-tetraacetic acid (EDTA) in 2001. Sunflower was grown at two densities, 20000 and 60000 plants/ha, and poplar at 10000 plants/ha. The tetrasodium salt of EDTA was applied at rates of 0, 0.5, 1, and 2 g EDTA salt per kg surface (25-cm depth) soil. The EDTA did not affect uptake by poplar of the three non-essential (Cd, Ni, Pb) and four essential (Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn) heavy metals. For sunflower, the 1.0 g/kg rate of chelate addition resulted in maximal removal of the three non-essential heavy metals (Cd, Ni, Pb). Uptake of the essential heavy metals by sunflower was little affected by the EDTA. At the 20000 plants/ha density, leaves of sunflower grown with 1.0 g EDTA Na42H2O per kg soil accumulated more Cd, Ni, and Pb than leaves of sunflower grown without the EDTA salt. At this density, concentrations of Cd in leaves of sunflower without EDTA and with 1.0 g/kg EDTA salt were 2.2 and 6.5 g/g, respectively; for Ni, they were 6.7 and 19.2 g/g, respectively; and for Pb, they were 15.6 and 46.9 g/g, respectively. At the 60000 plants/ha density, stems of sunflower grown with 1.0 g EDTA Na42H2O per kg soil accumulated more Cd, Ni, and Pb than stems of sunflower grown without the EDTA salt. At this density, concentrations of Cd in stems of sunflower without EDTA and with 1.0 g/kg EDTA salt were 0.6 and 4.6 g/g, respectively; for Ni, they were 1.7 and 17.6 g/g, respectively; and for Pb, they were 5.2 and 42.8 g/g, respectively. Removal of the non-essential heavy metals by sunflower was greater at the higher plant density (60000 plants/ha) compared to the lower one (20000 plants/ha).  相似文献

How B cells and dendritic cells may cooperate in antigen purification   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The specificity of the immunological responses is achieved through the cooperation of three classes of cells: B and T lymphocytes, and dendritic cells (DCs). A critical, intensely studied interaction is that between DCs and T cells, during which the DC presents MHC-bound antigenic fragments to the T cell receptor (TCR). There has been recent excitement about the possibility of increasing the signal-to-noise ratio in the detection of cognate antigen-TCR couples, by the use of kinetic proofreading mechanisms. We examine here the signal-to-noise problem in a broader perspective, and in particular, address the question of possible "antigen purification" mechanisms, prior to their presentation to the T cells. Ways in which the DCs might concentrate, purify and preserve their load of captured antigens are considered: (i) If antigens can be transferred from one DC to another, in such a way that the richer a DC in antigen, the more it captures antigens from other DCs, the antigens may end up concentrated in a small subset of DCs, (ii) antigen purification may be achieved through recycling interactions between DCs and B cells. A DC would transmit to a B cell antigen mixtures, and the DC would recapture only the antigens which can bind to the B cell's antibodies and (iii) dendrites, when they are present, may play an essential role in recapturing the antigens that were used in interactions of DCs with T cells, B cells, or other DCs, thereby reducing antigen losses. More generally, we provide a personal interpretation of cell-to-cell antigen transfers, in terms of a strategy in which there is a progressive emergence, through multiple interactions, of subsets of cells of each type better and better prepared for the subsequent rounds of interactions.  相似文献

Mn, Fe, Cu, and Cd concentrations are reported for Lake Vanda, a closed-basin, meromictic, Antarctic lake and for its single major inflow, the Onyx River. Trace metal distributions in the upper lake and annual metal fluxes from the Onyx River were used to estimate chemical residence times in the mixed zone above the chemocline. Residence times, based on total metal loads, were 9.4 years for Mn; 1.4 years for iron; 174 years for copper; and 82 years for cadmium. Controls on the steady state concentrations of metals in this system are likely to include: particle settling of Fe and Mn; scavenging of minor elements on metal oxide surfaces; sulfide precipitation from the anoxic brine; and possibly uptake of metals on the surface of benthic algal mats. Model calculations show that metal removal by sinking phytoplankton can account for only a small fraction of the annual loss.  相似文献

The objectives of the present study were to develop microsatellite markers for the wild strawberry, Fragaria virginiana, to evaluate segregation patterns of microsatellite alleles in this octoploid species, and assess genetic variability at microsatellite loci in a wild population. A genomic library was screened for microsatellite repeats and several PCR primers were designed and tested. We also tested the use of heterologous primers and found that F. virginiana primers amplified products in cultivated strawberry, Fragaria × ananassa Duch. and Fragaria chiloensis. Similarly, microsatellite loci developed from cultivated strawberry also successfully amplified F. virginiana loci. We investigated four microsatellite loci in detail, three developed from F. virginiana and one from cultivated strawberry. A survey of 100 individuals from a population of F. virginiana in Pennsylvania demonstrated high heterozygosities (He or gene diversity ranged from 0.80 to 0.88 per locus) and allelic diversity (12–17 alleles per locus), but individual plants had no more than two alleles per locus. Segregation patterns in parents and progeny of two controlled crosses at these four loci were consistent with disomic Mendelian inheritance. Together these findings suggest that the genome of F. virginiana is "highly diploidized" and at least a subset of microsatellite loci can be treated as codominant, diploid markers. Significant heterozygote deficiencies were found at three of the four loci for hermaphroditic individuals but for only one locus among females in this gynodioecious species.Communicated by J. Figs and fig-pollinating wasps are obligate mutualists that have coevolved for over 60 million years. But when and where did pollinating fig wasps (Agaonidae) originate? Some studies suggest that agaonids arose in the Late Cretaceous and the current distribution of fig-wasp faunas can be explained by the break-up of the Gondwanan landmass. However, recent molecular-dating studies suggest divergence time estimates that are inconsistent with the Gondwanan vicariance hypothesis and imply that long distance oceanic dispersal could have been an important process for explaining the current distribution of both figs and fig wasps. Here, we use a combination of phylogenetic and biogeographical data to infer the age, the major period of diversification, and the geographic origin of pollinating fig wasps. Age estimates ranged widely depending on the molecular-dating method used and even when using the same method but with slightly different constraints, making it difficult to assess with certainty a Gondwanan origin of agaonids. The reconstruction of ancestral areas suggests that the most recent common ancestor of all extant fig-pollinating wasps was most likely Asian, although a southern Gondwana origin cannot be rejected. Our analysis also suggests that dispersal has played a more important role in the development of the fig-wasp biota than previously assumed.  相似文献

Estimates of the timing of divergence are central to testing the underlying causes of speciation. Relaxed molecular clocks and fossil calibration have improved these estimates; however, these advances are implemented in the context of gene trees, which can overestimate divergence times. Here we couple recent innovations for dating speciation events with the analytical power of species trees, where multilocus data are considered in a coalescent context. Divergence times are estimated in the bird genus Aphelocoma to test whether speciation in these jays coincided with mountain uplift or glacial cycles. Gene trees and species trees show general agreement that diversification began in the Miocene amid mountain uplift. However, dates from the multilocus species tree are more recent, occurring predominately in the Pleistocene, consistent with theory that divergence times can be significantly overestimated with gene‐tree based approaches that do not correct for genetic divergence that predates speciation. In addition to coalescent stochasticity, Haldane's rule could account for some differences in timing estimates between mitochondrial DNA and nuclear genes. By incorporating a fossil calibration applied to the species tree, in addition to the process of gene lineage coalescence, the present approach provides a more biologically realistic framework for dating speciation events, and hence for testing the links between diversification and specific biogeographic and geologic events.  相似文献

Estimating the temporal origins of lineage diversity adds an important dimension to understanding diversity generating processes. In lineages with a sparse fossil record, molecular phylogenetic methods provide a means for estimating divergence times. In the present study, we use publicly available sequence data from the chloroplast genome of liverworts to simultaneously estimate significant divergence dates across all classes and orders of liverworts (Marchantiophyta). We show that, although there is great potential in synthetic dating analyses of sequence data, missing sequences can reduce the reliability of estimates, and that calibration priors should be interpreted with caution. Using the liverwort dataset as a broad outgroup, we obtain the first divergence time estimates for a large family of leafy liverworts; the Lepidoziaceae (Jungermanniidae). The Lepidoziaceae originated in the early Cretaceous with subsequent establishment of main lineages in the late Cretaceous. Divergence time estimates are consistent with Cenozoic diversification in Lepidozia, Telaranea, and Bazzania. Evidence was found for similar patterns of ancient origins followed by Cenozoic diversification in Ricciaceae (Marchantiopsida), Pelliaceae and Fossombroniaceae (Pelliidae), and Metzgeriaceae (Metzgeriidae), and adds to reports of similar patterns in Lejeuneaceae (Jungermanniidae, Porellales), and Plagiochilaceae (Jungermaniidae, Jungermanniales).
