Several reviews in the past decade have heralded the benefits of embracing high‐throughput sequencing technologies to inform conservation policy and the management of threatened species, but few have offered practical advice on how to expedite the transition from conservation genetics to conservation genomics. Here, we argue that an effective and efficient way to navigate this transition is to capitalize on emerging synergies between conservation genetics and primary industry (e.g., agriculture, fisheries, forestry and horticulture). Here, we demonstrate how building strong relationships between conservation geneticists and primary industry scientists is leading to mutually‐beneficial outcomes for both disciplines. Based on our collective experience as collaborative New Zealand‐based scientists, we also provide insight for forging these cross‐sector relationships.  相似文献

Lucilia sericata larvae are used in maggot debridement therapy, a traditional wound healing approach that has recently been approved for the treatment of chronic wounds. Maggot excretion products (MEP) contain many different proteases that promote disinfection, debridement and the acceleration of wound healing, e.g. by activating the host contact phase/intrinsic pathway of coagulation. In order to characterise relevant procoagulant proteases, we analysed MEP and identified a chymotrypsin-like serine protease with similarities to Jonah proteases from Drosophila melanogaster and a chymotrypsin from Lucilia cuprina. A recombinant form of the L. sericata Jonah chymotrypsin was produced in Escherichia coli. The activated enzyme (Jonahm) had a pH optimum of 8.0 and a temperature optimum of 37 °C, based on the cleavage of the chromogenic peptide s-7388 and casein. Jonahm reduced the clotting time of human plasma even in the absence of the endogenous protease kallikrein, factor XI or factor XII and digested the extracellular matrix proteins fibronectin, laminin and collagen IV, suggesting a potential mechanism of wound debridement. Based on these characteristics, the novel L. sericata chymotrypsin-like serine protease appears to be an ideal candidate for the development of topical drugs for wound healing applications.  相似文献

The richness of biodiversity in the tropics compared to high‐latitude parts of the world forms one of the most globally conspicuous patterns in biology, and yet few hypotheses aim to explain this phenomenon in terms of explicit microevolutionary mechanisms of speciation and extinction. We link population genetic processes of selection and adaptation to speciation and extinction by way of their interaction with environmental factors to drive global scale macroecological patterns. High‐latitude regions are both cradle and grave with respect to species diversification. In particular, we point to a conceptual equivalence of “environmental harshness” and “hard selection” as eco‐evolutionary drivers of local adaptation and ecological speciation. By describing how ecological speciation likely occurs more readily at high latitudes, with such nascent species especially prone to extinction by fusion, we derive the ephemeral ecological speciation hypothesis as an integrative mechanistic explanation for latitudinal gradients in species turnover and the net accumulation of biodiversity.  相似文献

Sillem's Mountain Finch Leucosticte sillemi was described in 1992 on the basis of an adult and an immature specimen collected in western Tibet in September 1929, but its taxonomic validity and phylogenetic position have been unclear. Based on phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial DNA from the holotype, we show that L. sillemi is not a colour morph of Brandt's Mountain Finch Leucosticte brandti but represents a valid, previously overlooked species of rosefinch (Carpodacus) that has secondarily acquired a pale plumage convergent on that of Leucosticte. Sillem's Mountain Finch is one of the least known species of bird and represents the only known species of rosefinch in which males have no reddish plumage coloration. This species and its sister taxon, the Tibetan Rosefinch Carpodacus roborowskii, are likely to be the world's highest‐altitude sister‐species pair of birds.  相似文献

Plant trait variation can be the result of environmental variability, developmental instability, and plasticity, although it can also arise from previous selective pressures on fruit traits themselves or directly on their variation. We aimed to quantify fruit size and shape variability at within‐plant, among‐plant, among‐population, and among‐year levels. For 2 years, we measured fruit size and shape along the geographical range of Corema album, aiming to determine whether (1) the population level among‐plant variation is lower than within‐plant and among‐population variation and (2) the ratio of within‐plant to among‐plant variation follows a latitudinal pattern. Levels of fruit variation were in accordance with the reported mean levels for reproductive organs. Most variance concentrated on within‐ and among‐individual levels for size, showing higher values for among‐individual variation in fruit shape. Although fruit size retained important variation among populations, this source of variance was negligible for fruit shape. This difference could arise from contrasting mechanical or developmental constraints. Despite the marked climatic differences along the latitudinal range of the species, latitude did not affect the ratio of within‐ to among‐plant variation. We show that an analysis of the often‐disregarded sources of intraspecific variation can produce unexpected results that deserve further investigation.  相似文献
