Northeast China (NEC) accounts for about 30% of the nation's maize production in China. In the past three decades, maize yields in NEC have increased under changes in climate, cultivar selection and crop management. It is important to investigate the contribution of these changing factors to the historical yield increases to improve our understanding of how we can ensure increased yields in the future. In this study, we use phenology observations at six sites from 1981 to 2007 to detect trends in sowing dates and length of maize growing period, and then combine these observations with in situ temperature data to determine the trends of thermal time in the maize growing period, as a measure of changes in maize cultivars. The area in the vicinity of these six sites accounts for 30% of NEC's total maize production. The agricultural production systems simulator, APSIM‐Maize model, was used to separate the impacts of changes in climate, sowing dates and thermal time requirements on maize phenology and yields. In NEC, sowing dates trended earlier in four of six sites and maturity dates trended later by 4–21 days. Therefore, the period from sowing to maturity ranged from 2 to 38 days longer in 2007 than it was in 1981. Our results indicate that climate trends alone would have led to a negative impact on maize. However, results from the adaptation assessments indicate that earlier sowing dates increased yields by up to 4%, and adoption of longer season cultivars caused a substantial increase in yield ranging from 13% to 38% over the past 27 years. Therefore, earlier sowing dates and introduction of cultivars with higher thermal time requirements in NEC have overcome the negative effects of climate change and turned what would have otherwise been a loss into a significant increase in maize yield.  相似文献

We examined the fraction of resistant cultivars necessary to prevent a global pathogen outbreak (the resistance threshold) using a spatially explicit epidemiological model (SIR model) in a finite, two-dimensional, lattice-structured host population. Infectious diseases in our model could be transmitted to susceptible nearest-neighbour sites, and the infected site either recovered or died after an exponentially distributed infectious period. Threshold behaviour of this spatially explicit SIR model cannot be reduced to that of bond percolation, as was previously noted in the literature, unless extreme assumptions (synchronized infection events with a fixed lag) are imposed on infection process. The resistance threshold is significantly lower than that of conventional mean-field epidemic models, and is even lower if the spatial configuration of resistant and susceptible crops are negatively correlated. Finite size scaling applied to the resistance threshold for a finite basic reproductive ratio ρ of pathogen reveals that its difference from static percolation threshold (0.41) is inversely proportional to ρ. Our formula for the basic reproductive ratio dependency of the resistance threshold produced an estimate for the critical basic reproductive ratio (4.7) in a universally susceptible population, which is much larger than the corresponding critical value (1) in the mean-field model and nearly three times larger than the critical growth rate of a basic contact process (SIS model). Pair approximation reveals that the resistance threshold for preventing a global epidemic is factor 1/(1−η) greater with spatially correlated planting than with random planting, where η is initial correlation in host genotypes between nearest-neighbour sites. Thus the eradication is harder with a positive spatial correlation (η>0) in mixed susceptible/resistant plantings, and is easier with a negative correlation (η<0). The effect of finite field size (L), which corresponded to the mean distance between sources of infections, is given by the increased resistance threshold (by the amount L−0.75) from its infinite size limit. Implications of these results on effective planting strategies in multi-line control plans are discussed.  相似文献

在田间试验条件下,采用10个小麦品种,设全生育期不灌水(W0)、灌底墒水+拔节水(W1)、灌底墒水+拔节水+开花水(W2)3个处理,每次灌水量60 mm,研究不同小麦品种不同生育阶段的耗水特点和籽粒产量的差异.结果表明:以W0、W1和W2处理的小麦籽粒产量和水分利用效率(WUE)2因子为指标进行聚类分析,可将10个品种分为3组:高产高水分利用效率组(组Ⅰ)、高产中水分利用效率组(组Ⅱ)和中产低水分利用效率组(组Ⅲ).在W0处理下,组Ⅰ小麦品种的总耗水量、开花至成熟期的耗水量和耗水模系数均低于组Ⅱ和组Ⅲ,籽粒产量最高;在W1处理下,组Ⅰ小麦品种拔节至开花期的耗水量和耗水模系数均低于组Ⅱ和组Ⅲ,开花至成熟期的耗水量和耗水模系数在组Ⅰ、组Ⅱ和组Ⅲ间无显著差异;在W2处理下,组Ⅰ小麦品种的土壤供水量、拔节至开花期的耗水量和耗水模系数均低于组Ⅱ和组Ⅲ,开花至成熟期的耗水量和耗水模系数为组Ⅰ和组Ⅲ低于组Ⅱ.表明组Ⅰ高产高水分利用效率品种为最适宜品种,而底墒水和拔节水各灌60 mm的W1处理是兼顾高产与节水的最佳处理.  相似文献

There is interest in growing peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) for forage, but little is known about the nutritive value and forage quality of modern cultivars. The objective of this study was to compare the chemical composition and in sacco degradation kinetics of three cultivars of peanuts (cv. ‘C99-R’, ‘Georgia-01R’, and ‘York’) at either stage 2 or 8 maturities when fresh and field-cured. Herbage yield was at least 3000 kg DM/ha for all cultivars at both maturities. Crude protein (CP) was greater (P < 0.0001) at R2 stage than at R8 stage; whereas, neutral detergent fiber (aNDF), acid detergent fiber, and Lignin (sa) were greater (P < 0.01) at R8 than R2 maturity stages. Water soluble carbohydrate and acid detergent insoluble nitrogen was not different (P > 0.07) among cultivars, maturity stage, or harvest forms. In vitro true digestibility was greatest (P < 0.02) for C99-R and least for York. Undegradable intake protein concentration was greatest (P < 0.04) in York and least for C99-R. Maturity had a greater effect on the degradation kinetics than harvest form or cultivar. The dry matter (DM) and CP in the soluble wash fraction (A) and insoluble but degradable fraction (B) and the effective ruminal degradability were greater among all cultivars and both harvest forms of the R2 maturity stage than the R8. The undegradable DM, aNDF, and CP in the undegradable fraction were greatest (P < 0.002) for all three cultivars at R8 maturity. The rate of degradation of DM and CP in the B fraction was faster (P < 0.001) at R2 stage than at R8 stage; whereas, rate of aNDF degradation was not different (P > 0.09) among treatments. Lag of DM, aNDF, or CP degradation was not different (P > 0.1) among treatments. The cultivars C99-R and Georgia-01R are recommended for further feeding trials.  相似文献

The ontogenetic changes in source-sink relation associated with the manipulation of reproductive sink at different positions on the plant in two okra cultivars (Arka Anamika and Pusa Makhamali) with distinct branching habit (cv. Arka Anamika tends to branch at the middle nodes unlike cv. Pusa Makhamali) were analysed. The cultivar differences for extension growth were nonsignificant except at treatment where all flowers and flower buds upto 8th mode were removed. The reproductive sink reductions resulted in a decrease of total dry matter accumulation per plant to an extent of 13 to 46% in Arka Anamika and 18 to 34 % in Pusa Makhamali. Fruits on the middle nodes appear to be prominent sinks for photo assimilates in cv. Arka Anamika. The reproductive sink manipulation did not result in any particular change in the trend of photosynthesis, but brought about a significant change in the partitioning of dry matter. Homocysteine-dependent transmethylases utilizing 5-methyltetrahydropteroylglutamic acid and S-adenosylmethionine as methyl donors have been examined using ammonium sulphate fractions prepared from isolated mitochondria of pea cotyledons. Substantial levels of a 5-rnethyltetrahydropteroylglutamate transmethylase were detected, the catalytic properties of this enzyme being found similar to those of a previously reported enzyme present in cotyledon extracts. The mitochondrial 5-CH3-H4PteGlu transmethylase had an apparent Km of 25 μM for the methyl donor, was saturated with homocysteine at 1 mM and was inhibited 50% by l-methionine at 2.5 mM. At similar concentrations of methyl donor the mitochondrial S-adenosylmethionine methyltransferase was not saturated. Mitochondrial preparations were found capable of synthesizing substantial amounts of S-adenosylmethionine but lacked ability to form S-methylmethionine. Significant levels of β-cystathionase, cystathionine-γ-synthase, l-homoserine transacetylase and l-homoserine transsuccinylase were detected in the isolated mitochondria. The activity of the enzymes of homocysteine biosynthesis was not affected by l-methionine in vitro. It is concluded that pea mitochondria have ability to catalyze the synthesis of methionine de novo.  相似文献
