Summary The rates of water use and leaf surface conductance of Citrullus colocynthis (Cucurbitacea) were evaluated from measurements of the surface temperature and microenvironment of leaves. At desert sites in Saudi Arabia the transpiration rates reached 0.13–0.17 g m-2 s-1 and the leaf temperatures were always close to air temperature. Leaf models (dry) placed in the canopy were considerably warmer than the air. To investigate responses over a wider range of conditions, plants were grown in a controlled environment room. It was found that when conditions were made hotter than those that occurred in the desert, the stomatal conductance increased greatly. Transpiration rate attained 0.6 g m-2 s-1 and the leaves were up to seven degrees cooler than the air. The results suggest a finely-tuned control mechanism working like a switch when the leaves experience extreme conditions, and enabling the plant to avoid lethal temperatures. 相似文献

Summary Fertilizer/soil N balance of cropped and fallow soil has been studied in a pot experiment carried out with grey forest soil (southern part of Moscow region) at increasing rates of15N labelled ammonium sulfate (0; 8; 16; 32 mg N/100 g of soil). The fertilizer15N balance has been shown to depend upon its application rate and the presence of growing plants. Fertilizer N uptake efficiency was maximum (72.5%) and gaseous losses-minimum (12.5%) at the application rate of 16 mg N/100 g of soil. Fertilizer N losses from the fallow soil were 130–220% versus those from the cropped soil. At the application of fertilizer N the plant uptake of soil N was 170–240% and the amount of soil N as N–NH4 exchangeable + N–NO3 in fallow was 350–440% as compared to the control treatment without nitrogen (PK).After cropping without or with N fertilizer application at the rates of 8 and 32 mg N/100 g of soil, a positive nitrogen balance has been found which is likely due to nonsymbiotic (associative) N-fixation. Summary Absorption of nitrate and ammonium was studied in water culture experiments with 4 to 6 weeks old plants of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum L. Moench) and rape (Brassica napus L.). The plants were grown in a complete nutrient solution with nitrate (5.7±0.2 mM) or nitrate (5.6±0.2 mM) + ammonium (0.04±0.02 mM). The pH of the nutrient solution was kept at 5.0 using a pH-stat. It was found that phosphorus deficiency reduced the rate of nitrate uptake by 58±3% when nitrate was the sole N source and by 83±1% when both nitrate and ammonium were present. The reduction occurred even before growth was significantly impeded by P deficiency. The inhibition of the uptake of ammonium was less,i.e. ammonium constituted 10±1% of the total N uptake in the P sufficient plants and 30±5% in the P deficient plants. The reduction of nitrate absorption greatly decreased the difference between the uptake of anions and cations. It is suggested that P deficiency reduced the assimilation of NO
3
–
into the proteins, which might cause a negative feedback on NO
3
–
influx and/or stimulate NO
3
–

The effects of adequate and restricted dietary protein and vitamin A on responses to infections by Nippostrongylus brasiliensis and N. brasiliensis plus Eimeria nieshulzi were determined in growing Sprague-Dawley rats. Infected rats experienced anorexia followed by a rebound in consumption that compensated for weight losses during anorexia. On certain days, reductions in the urinary/fecal nitrogen ratio, fecal and absorbed nitrogen, and apparent nitrogen and dry matter digestibilities occurred with the combined infections but not with those by nematodes alone. Effects of different levels of vitamin A were expressed only as an increase in nitrogen absorption occurring during the post-anoretic increase in appetite found with infected rats and in rats restricted in protein but receiving the higher level of the vitamin. Protein level was the most significant treatment effect: rats on high protein performed significantly better than those on low, regardless of the level of the other experimental variables. 相似文献

Summary Pelham has shown that theDrosophila hsp 70 gene is not transcribed under heat shock conditions unless a given upstream region is present. Davidson et al. have recently compiled a list of sequences homologous to this region in otherDrosophila heat shock genes. They proposed that a set of unlinked genes, such as the heat shock genes, could be coordinately induced through an interaction in cis with a common regulatory molecule. That this interaction involves structural elements is suggested by the fact that these upstream regions share inverted repeats as well as areas of Z-DNA potential. Furthermore, using the Calladine-Dickerson rules for local helical parameters, we show that these regions share structural homology. This is significant because the presence of regions homologous to a derived consensus sequence does not necessarily imply structural similarity. Therefore, we suggest that these structural features are at least as important as the sequence homologies in enabling the heat shock response. 相似文献

Synopsis Three closely related sunfish in the genus Enneacanthus were examined to determine if differences existed in their tolerance to low pH that could explain their contrasting distributions. Na fluxes of E. obesus, E. gloriosus, and E. chaetodon were measured during 12 h exposure to pH 4.0 and 3.5 (all species), and 3.25 (former 2 species only). All experienced ionic disturbances upon acid exposure resulting from inhibition of active Na influx and stimulation of passive Na efflux, but E. gloriosus and E. chaetodon experienced greater disturbances than E. obesus at all pH's tested. Body and plasma Na concentrations of E. gloriosus were measured after one week of exposure to a range of pH's for comparison with previously published data from E. obesus. Exposure to pH 4.0 and below caused a depression in body and plasma Na concentration of E. gloriosus, and only two of 10 fish survived the one week test period at pH 3.5; none survived at pH 3.25. In contrast, exposure to pH 4.0 for five weeks had no effect on body Na concentration of E. obesus, all 10 fish survived exposure to pH 3.5 for two weeks. Growth of E. gloriosus and E. obesus were measured separately during 12 weeks of exposure to a range of pH's. E. gloriosus exposed to pH 4.25 and 4.0 grew at a lower rate than those at higher pH's (4.5, 5.0, and 5.8), and body Na concentrations of fish at pH's 4.25 and 4.0 were significantly less than the others. With declining pH E. obesus did not exhibit reduced growth until pH 3.75 was reached; no depression in body Na concentration occurred at this pH. These results show that there are marked differences in low pH tolerance among closely related species of Enneacanthus which could affect their distributions and competitive interactions. 相似文献

Apples ( Malus domestica Borkh.) were heated for 4 days at 38°C immediately after harvest and then placed at 20°C for 7–10 days. Protein synthesis, ethylene production and fruit softening were reversibly inhibited by the heat treatment. Fruit respiration, membrane permeability and chlorophyll degradation in the fruit peel were enhanced during the treatment. The heat-treated apples ripened normally but more slowly than untreated apple We hypothesize that heat treatment differentially affects processes which normally increase simultaneously during fruit ripening, by inhibiting those processes which require tie novo protein synthesis and enhancing those that do not. 相似文献
