Arabidopsis plants overexpressing beta-carotene hydroxylase 1 accumulate over double the amount of zeaxanthin present in wild-type plants. The final amplitude of non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) was found to be the same in these plants, but the kinetics were different. The formation and relaxation of NPQ consistently correlated with the de-epoxidation state of the xanthophyll cycle pool and not the amount of zeaxanthin. These data indicate that zeaxanthin and violaxanthin antagonistically regulate the switch between the light harvesting and photoprotective modes of the light harvesting system and show that control of the xanthophyll cycle pool size is necessary to optimize the kinetics of NPQ.  相似文献

Very little is known in the UK about long term trends of theAlternaria spore although it is known to trigger asthma. It hasrecently become apparent that Alternaria spore levels areincreasing in Derby and a detailed study of Alternaria wasundertaken to investigate the increase in numbers, seasonal variationand diurnal periodicity. The seasonal (June—October)Alternaria spore concentrations show a distinct upward trendand there is evidence of an earlier seasonal start and an increase inthe seasonal duration. There has been a dramatic rise in the number ofdays with an Alternaria spore count above 50 spores per cubicmetre, with the peak daily count usually occurring in August butoccasionally in late July or early September. August generally has thehighest monthly total and for 1991–1998 there was a positivecorrelation with monthly rainfall and average temperature. Day to dayspore levels show a positive correlation between Alternariaspore concentrations and maximum temperature but a slight negativecorrelation with daily rainfall. The peak time for spore capture is14.00–22.00, and more than half the daily Alternariacatch is caught between 18.00 and 24.00 hours. The upward trend inAlternaria spore concentrations may be responsible forincreasing levels of respiratory disease, especially during harvesttime.  相似文献

In western cultures, certain cyanobacteria have beenan accepted source of microalgal biomass for food forabout 30 years, in particular Spirulina(Arthrospira) platensis and S. maxima. Beginning in the early 1980s, another species, Aphanizomenon flos-aquae was adopted for similaruses. This is harvested from Upper Klamath Lake, thelargest freshwater lake system in Oregon. In 1998 theannual commercial production of Aphanizomenonflos-aquae was about 1 × 106 kg. Since thisspecies is not cultured like Spirulina inoutdoor ponds or raceways, it requires very differentprocedures for harvesting and processing. These arereviewed here and include extensive off-lake screensor on-lake barges, which dewater and concentrate thecells. Other procedures, such as those for removal ofdetritus and mineral materials, and those formonitoring and reducing the amounts of certaincontaminant cyanobacteria, which can producecyanotoxins, have also become important in qualitycontrol and marketing.  相似文献

Ecklonia maxima is an economically important kelp in South Africa. The harvested kelp is used mainly as feed for cultured Haliotis midae (abalone) on farms all along the South African South and West Coast. The effects that different harvesting methods have on the growth of sub-canopy kelps, kelp population structure and kelp recruitment were tested in a kelp bed at Bordjies Rif near Cape Town. Two 30 × 10 m sites were set up, about 100 m apart, in near monoculture stands of E. maxima. Each 30×10 m area was subdivided into three treatments. In treatment 1 (T1) the whole ‘head’ of each kelp sporophyte that reached the surface was cut off between the bulb and the primary blade (‘lethal’ method). In treatment 2 (T2) (‘non-lethal’ method), the secondary fronds of all sporophytes that reached the surface were cut 20–30 cm from their junction with the primary blade, and removed. In the control plot, the kelp plants were not treated. Harvesting treatments were done approximately every four months, at low spring tide, from 3 March 2003 to 3 November 2003 (three treatments). The effects of harvesting on the kelps depend largely on the size of plant and the time the fronds were removed; however, no seasonal pattern could be observed. The different treatments had no effect on the growth rate, population structure or recruitment of the kelp. This means that factors other than light play an important role in the growth, structure and recruitment of the kelp beds in False Bay. Results are discussed in relation to current commercial harvesting practices.  相似文献

Stand structure, the arrangement and interrelationships of live and dead trees, has been linked to forest regeneration, nutrient cycling, wildlife habitat, and climate regulation. The objective of this review was to synthesize literature on stand structural dynamics of North American boreal forests, addressing both live tree and coarse woody debris (CWD) characteristics under different disturbance mechanisms (fire, clearcut, wind, and spruce budworm), while identifying regional differences based on climate and surficial deposit variability. In fire origin stands, both live tree and CWD attributes are influenced initially largely by the characteristics of the stand replacing fire and later increasingly by autogenic processes. Differences in stand structure have also been observed between various stand cover types. Blowdown and insect outbreaks are two significant non-stand replacing disturbances that can alter forest stand structure through removing canopy trees, freeing up available growing space, and creating microsites for new trees to establish. Climate and surficial deposits are highly variable in the boreal forest due to its extensive geographic range, influencing stand and landscape structure by affecting tree colonization, stand composition, successional trajectories, CWD dynamics, and disturbance regimes including regional fire cycles. Further, predicted climate change scenarios are likely to cause regional-specific alterations in stand and landscape structure, with the implications on ecosystem components including wildlife, biodiversity, and carbon balance still unclear. Some stand structural attributes are found to be similar between clearcut and fire origin stands, but others appear to be quite different. Future research shall focus on examining structural variability under both disturbance regimes and management alternatives emulating both stand replacing and non-stand replacing natural disturbances.

为了解采伐干扰对巨桉(Eucalyptus grandis)人工林土壤动物的影响,于2005~2007年采用手捡法和干湿漏斗法对四川省洪雅县巨桉人工林采伐干扰前和采伐干扰后土壤动物群落进行调查,采伐干扰前四季共获土壤动物4775头,分属4门11纲27目,采伐干扰后获土壤动物4640头,分属4门10纲23目.采伐干扰后秋季(10月)、冬季(1月)和春季(4月)土壤动物个体数较采伐干扰前分别上升224头、368头和443头,而夏季(7月)下降了1170头.采伐干扰前巨桉人工林土壤动物个体数与类群数季节变化趋势基本一致,而采伐干扰后土壤动物类群数变化受土壤动物个体数变化的影响较小.与采伐干扰前相比,采伐干扰后枯落物层各季节土壤动物密度均低于采伐前,0~5 cm土层土壤动物密度与干扰前呈相反的变化趋势,其波动较5~10 cm和10~15 cm土层大.采伐干扰后土壤动物类群数四季共减少4个,采伐干扰前后土壤动物优势类群类群数波动小,采伐后常见类群类群数上升(除冬季外),稀有类群对采伐干扰较敏感,其类群数下降幅度较大.采伐干扰前后同功能种团均以杂食性和腐食性土壤动物为主,两者百分比之和均在89%以上.密度-类群指数(DG)和多样性指数(H′)的变化趋势相似,采伐干扰前后的变化趋势相反,表明采伐干扰对巨桉人工林土壤动物季节变化有较大影响.  相似文献

The plant light-harvesting complex of photosystem II (LHC-II) collects and transmits solar energy for photosynthesis in chloroplast membranes and has essential roles in regulation of photosynthesis and in photoprotection. The 2.5 A structure of pea LHC-II determined by X-ray crystallography of stacked two-dimensional crystals shows how membranes interact to form chloroplast grana, and reveals the mutual arrangement of 42 chlorophylls a and b, 12 carotenoids and six lipids in the LHC-II trimer. Spectral assignment of individual chlorophylls indicates the flow of energy in the complex and the mechanism of photoprotection in two close chlorophyll a-lutein pairs. We propose a simple mechanism for the xanthophyll-related, slow component of nonphotochemical quenching in LHC-II, by which excess energy is transferred to a zeaxanthin replacing violaxanthin in its binding site, and dissipated as heat. Our structure shows the complex in a quenched state, which may be relevant for the rapid, pH-induced component of nonphotochemical quenching.  相似文献

Chloroplast thylakoid protein phosphorylation was discovered, and the most conspicuous phosphoproteins identified, by John Bennett at Warwick University. His initial findings were published in 1977. The phosphoproteins included apoproteins of chloroplast light harvesting complex II. Thylakoid protein phosphorylation was shown to influence distribution of excitation energy between Photosystems I and II in 1979, during a visit by Bennett to the laboratory of Charles J. Arntzen at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. That work was published by Bennett, Katherine E. Steinback and Arntzen in 1980. Control of both protein phosphorylation and excitation energy distribution by the redox state of the plastoquinone pool was first established in 1980 during the author's visit to Arntzen's laboratory. The experiments were prompted by the realization that coupling between redox state of an inter-photosystem electron carrier and excitation energy distribution provides a concrete mechanism for adaptations known as state transitions. This work was published by Allen, Bennett, Steinback, and Arntzen in 1981. This discovery and its background are discussed, together with some implications for photosynthesis and for research generally. This minireview is a personal account of the Urbana-Warwick and related collaborations in 1979–83: it includes impressions, conjectures, and acknowledgements for which the author is solely responsible. AIMS: Current measures for controlling the public health risks associated with bivalve molluscan shellfish consumption rely on the use of Escherichia coli to indicate the sanitary quality of shellfish harvesting areas. However, it has been demonstrated that E. coli is an inadequate indicator of the viral risk associated with shellfish. An alternative indicator organism, male-specific RNA (FRNA) bacteriophage has been proposed for this role. This study compared the distribution of E. coli and FRNA bacteriophage in shellfish harvesting areas. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 608 shellfish samples from 49 shellfish harvesting areas were analysed for E. coli and FRNA bacteriophage using standard published methods. The geometric mean concentration of FRNA bacteriophage in all samples was over three times greater than that of E. coli (1800 and 538 counts/100 g for FRNA bacteriophage and E. coli, respectively). In contrast to E. coli, FRNA bacteriophage concentrations were strongly influenced by season with a geometric mean count of 4503 PFU/100 g in the winter (October-March) compared with 910 PFU/100 g in the summer (April-September). CONCLUSIONS: FRNA bacteriophage were present in shellfish at higher concentrations than E. coli. Elevated levels of FRNA bacteriophage observed in the winter concur with the known increased viral risk associated with shellfish harvested at that time of year in the UK. Levels of FRNA bacteriophage found in many shellfish from category B harvesting areas would not be eliminated by conventional treatment processes. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Data from this study will inform future proposals to introduce FRNA bacteriophage as an indicator of the viral risk associated with shellfish.  相似文献
