Feces were collected from six Steller sea lions ( Eumetopias jubatus ) that consumed known amounts of Atka mackerel ( Pleurogrammus monopterygius ), Pacific herring ( Clupea barengus ), pink salmon ( Oncorhynchus gorbuscha ), walleye pollock ( Theragra chalcogramma ), and squid ( Loligo opalacens ). The goal was to determine the numbers and types of taxon-specific hard parts that pass through the digestive tract and to develop correction factors for certain abundantly occurring structures. Over 20,000 fish and squid were consumed during 267 d of fecal collection. During this period, over 119,000 taxon-specific hard parts, representing 56 different structures, were recovered. Skeletal structures and non-skeletal structures accounted for 72% and 28% of all hard parts, respectively. The branchiocranium, axial skeleton, and dermocranium regions of the skeletal system accounted for the greatest number of hard parts recovered. Over 70% of all recovered hard parts were represented by one to six taxa specific structures for each prey type. The average number of hard parts (3.1–31.2) and structure types (2.0–17.7) recovered per individual prey varied across taxa and were used to derive correction factors (to reconstruct original prey numbers). A measure of the variability of hard part recovery among sea lions showed no difference for certain herring, pollock, and squid structures, however, there was a significant difference for salmon and Atka mackerel structures. Identifying all taxon- specific prey hard parts increases the likelihood of identifying and estimating the number of prey consumed.  相似文献

Breathing high concentrations of diesel exhaust (DE) induces pulmonary inflammation, bronchoconstriction, increased airway reactivity, and oxidative stress in healthy subjects. To examine if these responses occur at environmentally relevant concentrations of DE, we exposed 25 healthy subjects to DE (PM(10) 100 microg/m(3), 0.6 ppm NO(2) for 2-h) and filtered air on separate occasions. Immediately following DE exposure, subjects displayed an increase in subjective symptoms and a mild bronchoconstriction. Six hours following the cessation of DE exposure neither airway inflammation, nor antioxidant depletion (ascorbate, urate, and reduced glutathione), was seen at any level of the respiratory tract. Instead, an increased flux of reduced glutathione into the bronchial (p < 0.01) and nasal airways (p < 0.05) was observed. In separate, in vitro experiments, DE was found to have comparable oxidative activity to the transition metal rich residual oil fly ash (ROFA) particle, significantly depleting lung lining fluid ascorbic acid and reduced glutathione in a transition metal and superoxide-dependent mechanism. Together, these data indicate that even though DE has marked oxidative activity, this effect is not observed to any great extent in the airways of healthy subjects. We interpret these findings as being indicative that the antioxidant network at the air-lung interface in healthy subjects is capable of dealing with the oxidative challenge posed by DE at ambient concentrations.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Seeds of carob, Chinese senna, date and fenugreek are hard due to thickened endosperm cell walls containing mannan polymers. How the radicle is able penetrate these thickened walls to complete seed germination is not clearly understood. The objective of this study was to determine if radicle emergence is related to the production of endo-beta-mannanase to weaken the mannan-rich cell walls of the surrounding endosperm region, and/or if the endosperm structure itself is such that it is weaker in the region through which the radicle must penetrate. METHODS: Activity of endo-beta-mannanase in the endosperm and embryo was measured using a gel assay during and following germination, and the structure of the endosperm in juxtaposition to the radicle, and surrounding the cotyledons was determined using fixation, sectioning and light microscopy. KEY RESULTS: The activity of endo-beta-mannanase, the major enzyme responsible for galactomannan cell wall weakening increased in activity only after emergence of the radicle from the seed. Thickened cell walls were present in the lateral endosperm in the hard-seeded species studied, but there was little to no thickening in the micropylar endosperm except in date seeds. In this species, a ring of thin cells was visible in the micropylar endosperm and surrounding an operculum which was pushed open by the expanding radicle to complete germination. CONCLUSIONS: The micropylar endosperm presents a lower physical constraint to the completion of germination than the lateral endosperm, and hence its structure is predisposed to permit radicle protrusion.  相似文献

Hybrid sodium‐based dual‐ion capacitors (NDICs), which integrate the advantages of supercapacitors and sodium‐ion batteries, have attracted tremendous attention recently. In this work, hybrid sodium‐based dual‐ion capacitors are successfully developed with nitrogen‐doped microporous hard carbon as the cathode and soft carbon as the anode. N‐doping is beneficial to the functional groups, porous structure, and electric conductivity of hard carbon. Hybrid NDICs possess a wide voltage range (0.01–4.7 V), high‐energy density of 245.7 W h kg?1 at a power density of 1626 W kg?1, long cycle life (1000 cycles), and outstanding rate performance.  相似文献

Active carbons have unique physicochemical properties, but their conductivities and surface to weight ratios are much poorer than graphene. A unique and facile method is innovated to chemically process biomass by “drilling” holes with H2O2 and exfoliating into graphene‐like nanosheets with HAc, followed by carbonization at a high temperature for highly graphitized activated carbon with greatly enhanced porosity, unique pore structure, high conductivity, and large surface area. This graphene‐like carbon exhibits extremely high specific capacitance (340 F g?1 at 0.5 A g?1) and high specific energy density (23.33 to 16.67 W h kg?1) with excellent rate capability and long cycling stability (remains 98% after 10 000 cycles), which is much superior to all reported carbons including graphene. Synthesis mechanism for deriving biomass into porous graphene‐like carbons is discussed in detail. The enhancement mechanism for the porous graphene‐like carbon electrode reveals that rationally designed meso‐ and macropores are very critical in porous electrode performance, which can network micropores for diffusion freeways, high conductivity, and high utilization. This work has universal significance in producing highly porous and conductive carbons from biomass including biowastes for various energy storage/conversion applications.  相似文献

As one of the most important hypotheses on biogeographical distribution, Rapoport's rule has attracted attention around the world. However, it is unclear whether the applicability of the elevational Rapoport's Rule differs between organisms from different biogeographical regions. We used Stevens’ method, which uses species diversity and the averaged range sizes of all species within each (100 m) elevational band to explore diversity‐elevation, range‐elevation, and diversity‐range relationships. We compared support for the elevational Rapoport's rule between tropical and temperate species of seed plants in Nepal. Neither tropical nor temperate species supported the predictions of the elevational Rapoport's rule along the elevation gradient of 100–6,000 m a.s.l. for any of the studied relationships. However, along the smaller 1,000–5,000 m a.s.l. gradient (4,300 m a.s.l. for range‐elevation relationships) which is thought to be less influenced by boundary effects, we observed consistent support for the rule by tropical species, although temperate species did not show consistent support. The degree of support for the elevational Rapoport's rule may not only be influenced by hard boundary effects, but also by the biogeographical affinities of the focal taxa. With ongoing global warming and increasing variability of temperature in high‐elevation regions, tropical taxa may shift upward into higher elevations and expand their elevational ranges, causing the loss of temperate taxa diversity. Relevant studies on the elevational Rapoport's rule with regard to biogeographical affinities may be a promising avenue to further our understanding of this rule.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of male copulatory organs having a stylet has been studied in some genera of the Proseriata.Within the Monocelididae there was a variety of stylet-like hard structures. The stylet in Monocelis fusca was a differentiation of the basement membrane of the epithelium lining a penis-like muscular papilla. The penis papilla in Ectocotyla consisted of circular muscles surrounded by a thickened basement membrane and an epithelium. Archilopsis sp. and Archilina sp. with a duplex copulatory bulb, had a stylet within a spiny cirrus. The stylet in Archilopsis sp. was a cylindrical muscular protrusion with a thickened basement lamina that lined the cirrus lumen. The stylet structure in Archilina sp. was composed of four long spines which were derivatives of the basement membrane. In Ectocotyla multitesticulata and Dupliminona corsicana, the accessory prostatoid organ was provided with a hook-shaped stylet that was differentiated in the basement membrane and of which the material was continuous with the fibrous matrix between the muscles of the prostatic bulb. The stylet and needles in the Archimonocelis species were intracellular differentiations. The copulatory organ in Carenscoilia biforamen consisted of a tubiform stylet and four needles, all of which were also intracellular specializations.I consider copulatory hard structures in the Turbellaria to be taxonomically significant in terms of structure, differentiation, and location (whether subcellular, in the basement membrane, or intracellular).  相似文献

In this study, highly photoluminescent and photocatalytic Fe2O3@carbon quantum dots/graphene oxide nanostructures were synthesized using ball milling‐assisted hydrothermal synthesis with hard pistachio shells. Different analyses, such as X‐ray diffraction, energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to study the product structure. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy images were used to study product size and morphology. Optical properties of the as‐synthesized nanomaterials were investigated using ultraviolet–visible light and photoluminescence analyses. To increase photoluminescence intensity, ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid, polyethylene glycol, polyvinylpyrrolidone, and acetylacetonate anions were used to modify the product surface. Thermal stability of the product was studied using thermal gravimetric analysis. Finally, photocatalytic activity and surface adsorption of the product were investigated; the produce was found to be highly photoluminescent with high photocatalytic and surface activities.  相似文献
