From 1979 to 1991 the species composition of communities living on hard substrata (hardsub) in the Oosterschelde has been studied — in both the littoral and sublittoral zones. From 1984 onwards, biomass was also measured. This paper deals mainly with the distribution and the development of biomass on sublittoral hardsub in the Oosterschelde. Analysis has shown that the most important abiotic factors regulating the flora and fauna are: quantity and nature of the substrate; sedimentation; exposure to water movement (mainly currents); and light. The construction of the storm-surge barrier has influenced those factors. The main consequences for the flora and fauna on sublittoral hard substrata have been through the increased amount of available hard substratum by about 10% until 1984 and a further 20% from 1984 to 1987, the main barrier construction period). Within the same period (until 1987) the biomass per square metre also increased. This caused a net increase of hardsub biomass — in the sublittoral — of about 35%.After the barrier was completed sedimentation increased; in some parts of the basin hardsub organisms were covered by sediment and have not recovered; the total quantity of available hard substratum decreased by an amount yet to be established. For the purpose of this paper it is tentatively estimated at 20%, but the process is still going on.Tidal current velocities are smaller in the post-barrier situation, which caused a shift from more passive suspension feeders to more actively filtering species. The relative importance of suspension feeders on hard substrata has decreased by about 20% after the building of the storm-surge barrier. In 1990 and 1991 it increased again.Overall water transparency increased, but the lower limit of macroalgal growth has not gone deeper, as nearshore turbulence and turbidity did not change significantly.Effects on hardsub were small in the beginning. During the construction period (1985–1987) no clear effects were registered. After the completion of the barrier total species diversity increased at first, followed by a decrease from the second half of 1988 onwards. Biomass increased rather sharply, at first, but decreased very sharply in 1989. In 1990 a recovery in biomass became apparent. Developments in biomass and species composition differed per sampling location. An attempt is made to explain some of those developments, in relation to the abiotic changes brought about by the storm-surge barrier. This appeared difficult, because climatic influences obscured the effects of the barrier. The most explicit of those masking effects was brought about by a temporary, huge increase of the brittlestar (Ophiothrix fragilis). This animal covered the substratum in relatively thick layers (up to 5 cm) and more or less suffocated the other fauna. It was therefore difficult to quantify the effect of increased sedimentation on the fauna. The increase of Ophiothrix is probably not caused by the storm-surge barrier, but by a succession of several mild winters. It is clear that a new equilibrium in the basin is still to be reached. Total effects in terms of species richness and of biomass will continue to be monitored, and the results used to advise the water authorities as to management and nature friendly dike building methods.  相似文献

Abstract. Supercooling points and chill tolerance were compared among nymphs and adults of the ixodid ticks Dermacentor variabilis, Amblyomma americanum and Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae).Supercooling points in the range of <-22 to -18°C were observed for nymphs, and -22 to -8°C for adults. The lower lethal temperatures observed under dry conditions, -14 to -10°C, were warmer than the supercooling points, but still much colder than -4.8°C, the lowest temperature recorded from a likely tick habitat in southwestern Ohio.Based on our experiments, spontaneous freezing and direct chilling injury are not significant mortality factors in these species in the field.Mortality was observed between -5 and -3°C for A.americanum and D.variabilis nymphs chilled for 2 h while in direct contact with ice. This mortality is probably due to inoculative freezing.Given the requirement for a rather humid microhabitat for off-host survival, these findings suggest that inoculative freezing is an important cause of overwintering mortality in these medically important species.  相似文献

Phylogenetic analysis of plastid DNA restriction site and rearrangement mutations suggests a number of major revisions to taxonomy and phylogenetic concepts in the hard pines. Total genomic DNA from 18 species that sampled all nine subsections was digested with 19 restriction enzymes, blotted, and probed with 70% of the Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) chloroplast genome, or, with clones encompassing the entire chloroplast genome of Pinus contorta. A total of 204 site mutations and five rearrangement mutations were generated, of which 126 were phylogenetically informative. Wagner parsimony analyses revealed 11 clades that were strongly supported by bootstrap and decay index analyses. All North American species except P. resinosa formed a distinct monophyletic group that was strongly separated from the Eurasian species. Within the Eurasian clade subsect. Sylvestres was polyphyletic; its Mediterranean species were closely allied with members of sect. Pinea. Sect. Pinea appeared polyphyletic as well; both species of its subsect. Leiophyllae showed a close affinity to Mesoamerican pines of subsect. Oocarpae in sect. Pinus. Within the North American pines subsects. Ponderosae and Oocarpae were polyphyletic. Despite its shallow fossil record, subsect. Contortae emerged as a sister group to all of the North American pines apart from P. resinosa, which was allied with Eurasian species of subsect. Sylvestres. The remaining North American subsections formed two groups: a poorly resolved clade with subsects. Ponderosae and Sabinianae, and sequentially nested clades represented by: P. radiata; P. taeda; representatives of subsects. Oocarpae and Ponderosae from Mesoamerica, and subsect. Leiophyllae. We present estimates of divergence times for each of these major clades based on molecular clocks calibrated using two hard pine fossil observations.  相似文献

In order to study their usefulness for ecological monitoring, the Abundance–Biomass comparison (ABC method) and Biomass Size Spectra (BSS) have been applied to hard substrata macrozoobenthic communities of a marine bay affected by river pollution. Both methods reveal several features related to the stress effects of suspended solids, such as the substantial development of suspension-feeder beds towards the inner parts of the bay (more polluted) or the resulting dominance of macrofauna over macroflora at those sites. The animal dominance on stressed rocky shores is higher in terms of biomass than in terms of abundance. By means of the synthetic parameters W(ABC method) and m(slope of the Normalized Biomass Size Spectra, NBSS), these two methods are correlated with other parameters of community diversity and biomass. In addition, W and m are positively correlated except for the upper intertidal zone. However, it has not been possible to interpret the results following the criteria for soft substrata or for pelagic systems, where the methods were developed. The inclusion of algae and a different treatment of suspension-feeders are suggested as ways of improving the future application of these graphical/distributional techniques on hard substrata.  相似文献

The caprellid amphipod Caprella mutica is indigenous to coastal waters of north-east Asia and was first recorded in European waters in 1995. We now detected mass occurrences of > 3000 individuals per m2 in harbours of the two islands of Sylt and Helgoland in the German Bight, North Sea. Currently, Caprella mutica seems to be restricted to artificial hard substrata but we expect it to become a new species in natural hard bottom assemblages of that region as well.  相似文献

In order to assess the effects of the execution of the Delta Project, the sessile sublittoral communities on hard substrates in the Oosterschelde estuary and the environmental parameters were quantitatively investigated from 1985 till 1990. During the construction period of the barrier, three communities were sampled in the photic zone and four in the aphotic zone. The distribution of the communities in the photic zone seemed to be determined by the exposition to water movement and depth, while the communities in the aphotic zone were restricted to geographic areas, with differences in tidal current velocities: the mouth of the estuary, the Hammen, the central part and the Zijpe. Two years after the completion of the enclosure works, the community structure changed rapidly, caused by decreases of tidal current velocities, increases of the amounts of sedimentation, especially of fine sediments, and an increase of the transparency of the water. Changes within the associated vagile animals showed the same tendency as the sessile communities: under less exposed conditions the number of organisms remained the same or increased, while at some locations this increase was nullified by increasing amounts of sedimentation.  相似文献
