Phytosociological and habitat studies of the phytocoenoses of Luronium natans have been conducted. The present results were compared with data on L. dortmanna and I. lacustris. It is demonstrated that the community of L. natans differs from the other two communities with respect to habitat conditions despite the fact that they have been reported to occur jointly and alongside in Lobelia lakes. It appears that significant differences between the communities are found not only regarding their waters, but also their substrates. L. natans dominated phytocoenoses are confined to oligotrophic, extremely soft waters, markedly poor in Ca2+, but richer in Na+ and SO4
2- than those of Lobelia and Isoëtes. Luronium natans develops best on acidic, highly hydrated substrates rich in organic matter, NO3
– and total N. The results obtained indicate that L. natans and the phytocoenoses formed by it are characterized by their narrow ecological amplitude in Poland as opposed to those occurring in western Europe, which tolerate a relatively wide range of habitats. The present findings confirm the data from numerous works, which point to the weak competitive ability of the species compared with species typical of eutrophic waters. 相似文献

The rate of oxygen consumption (OC) of 9 species of freshwater mussels was measured under declining dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations. The effects of temperature for some species also was investigated. The pattern of the OC vs. DO curve for each species was used in a hyperbolic model to compare abilities to regulate OC under low oxygen conditions. At 24.5 °C, Pyganodon grandis (from lakes), Amblema plicata and Quadrula pustulosa (from mud or sand in large rivers), Elliptio complanata (from pool areas in rivers), and Elliptio fisheriana and Elliptio lanceolata (from bank margins of rivers) were better able to maintain OC under low DO than were Villosa iris and Villosa constricta (which inhabit riffles) and Pleurobema cordatum (found in rivers with moderate flow). Villosa iris was especially sensitive to low oxygen conditions. The ability to maintain normal OC at low DO was improved considerably at 16.5 °C for V. iris, P. grandis and E. complanata. It is concluded that oxygen regulation ability appears to be related to the degree of hypoxia a species normally experiences in its habitat type, and it is enhanced at low temperature. The measurement of OC vs. DO may be a useful technique for estimating DO water quality criteria for endangered species because it is noninvasive. 相似文献

Information on biometric and biological parameters of Cancer bellianus Johnson, 1861 (Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura, Cancridae) off the Canary Islands is given. Crabs examined were collected during experimental fishing surveys during 1974–1998. Carapace length, carapace width, total wet weight, sex and ovigerous condition were determined. This species was caught at depths from 153 to 750 m, the deepest ever recorded. Size frequency distributions were assembled and size-weight relationships were estimated by sex. Sex-ratio as a function of size and depth was determined. The size at first maturity was calculated by analysing the relative growth between the carapace length and the left chela width: 103.5 mm CL in males, 101.2 mm CL in females. A novel artificial habitat collection device for studying resettlement patterns in anguillid glass eels 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The number of glass eels Anguilla australis and A. reinhardtii caught in artificial habitat collectors, made from a PVC base and polyethylene split rope fibres, was related to the number of rope fibre tufts attached to each collector rather than collector area directly. Ageing of collectors in situ to promote algal growth enhanced the catch of glass eels. Glass eels entered the collectors at night primarily during the flood tide, and did not move into the collectors during daylight hours. Glass eel abundance increased with increasing distance from the freshwater drain located in the causeway. The artificial habitat collectors are effective for assessing relative numbers of resettling glass eels and may be useful for studying recruitment and settlement patterns of other anguillid eel species, as well as identifying areas and habitats within a catchment that provide important shelter for glass eels. Sampling glass eels can be carried out with maximum effect and minimum effort using compact, aged artificial habitat collectors on the night time flood tide when low tide coincides with dusk. 相似文献

The ecological distribution of tardigrades on the island of Newfoundland, Canada is greatly affected by both abiotic and biotic factors. Altitude and type of bedrock are major determining factors in tardigrade distribution while both moisture content of the environment and rate of dessication of the mosses and lichens in which they live appear to be other factors contributing to their distribution. We studied seasonal change in habitat use by chimpanzees in the Kalinzu Forest, Uganda. The forest comprises various types of vegetation. For each vegetation type, we compared number of chimpanzees (per km2) that used the vegetation with fruit availability in different census periods. We estimated the number of chimpanzees by nest count and fruit availability via density of fallen fruit. The mixed mature forest contained a large amount of fruit during the high-fruiting season, but it decreased rapidly in the low-fruiting season. The number of chimpanzees also decreased in mixed mature forest in approximate proportion with fruit availability. In the Parinari-dominated mature and secondary forests, both fruit availability and number of chimpanzees were very low throughout the study. In the Musanga-dominated secondary forest, the number of chimpanzees increased toward the low-fruiting season, though the fruit availability decreased slightly. A multiple regression analysis showed that various fruits had significant effects on the number of chimpanzees during the high-fruiting season, while only Musanga
leo-errerae had a significant effect during the low-fruiting season. The results suggest that the fruit of Musanga leo-errerae functions as a fallback food, and a combination of different vegetation types supports the chimpanzees in the Kalinzu Forest. 相似文献

The effects of prey mite suitability on several demographic characteristics of phytoseiid predators and the relationship of
these effects to the potential of phytoseiid predators to control herbivorous mite populations are well documented. Evidence
has also accumulated in the last 20 years demonstrating that phytoseiid predators utilize herbivorous prey mite-induced plant
volatiles as olfactory cues in locating their herbivorous mite prey, but less well established is the predictability of reproductive
success from the ability of the predators to utilize olfactory cues to locate their prey, and how these processes are related
to the success of the predators as biological control agents of the herbivorous mite. In this study, we determined in laboratory
no choice experiments, the development, survivorship and fecundity of the two neotropical phytoseiid predators Typhlodromalus manihoti Moraes and T. aripo DeLeon when feeding on three herbivorous mites, including the key prey species Mononychellus tanajoa (Bondar), and the two alternative prey species Oligonychus gossypii (Zacher) and Tetranychus urticae (Koch). Intrinsic rate of increase (rm) of T. aripo was 2.1 fold higher on M. tanajoa as prey compared with T. urticae as prey, while it was almost nil on O. gossypii. For T. manihoti, rm was 2.3 fold higher on M. tanajoa as prey compared with O. gossypii as prey, while reproduction was nil on T. urticae. An independent experiment on odor-related prey preference of the two predator species showed that T. manihoti and T. aripo preferred odors from M. tanajoa-infested leaves to odors from O. gossypii-infested leaves. Moreover, both predator species preferred odors from M. tanajoa-infested leaves over those from T. urticae-infested leaves. As reported here, life history of the two predatory mites matches odor-related prey preference if the key
prey species is compared to the two inferior prey species. The implications of our findings for the persistence of T. manihoti and T. aripo and biological control of M. tanajoa in the cassava agroecosystem in Africa are discussed.
