Summary The gustatory sensory system provides animals with a rapid chemical analysis of a potential food substance providing information necessary to facilitate ingestion or rejection of the food. The process of gustatory transduction is initiated in the taste cells in the lingual epithelium. However, due to the small size, scarcity of the cells and their location, embedded in a keratinized squamous epithelium, it has been difficult to study the primary events in the transduction process. Recently, we have developed a preparation of dissociated rat taste cells that permits studies of the taste transduction process in single isolated cells. We have now investigated the electrophysiological properties of the rat taste cells using the patch-clamp technique. We have identified two populations of cells within the taste bud: one expressing a voltage-dependent potassium current and the second containing both voltage-dependent sodium and potassium currents. The potassium current in both cell groups is blocked by external TEA, Ba2+, and quinine. Two types of K+ channels have been identified: a 90-pS delayed rectifier K+ channel and a maxi calcium-activated K+ channel. The sodium current is blocked by TTX, but not by amiloride. 相似文献

The free fatty acids (FFAs), linoleic and oleic acids, commonly found in dietary fats can be detected by rats on the basis of gustatory cues following conditioned taste aversion pairings. FFAs depolarize the membrane potential of isolated rat taste receptor cells by inhibiting delayed rectifying potassium channels. This study examined the licking response of rats to sweet, salt, sour, and bitter taste solutions when 88 muM linoleic acid, 88 muM oleic acid, or an 88 muM linoleic-oleic acid mixture was added to the solutions. The presence of linoleic, oleic, and the linoleic-oleic acid mixture in sweet solutions produced increases in the licking responses, whereas adding linoleic, oleic, and the linoleic-oleic acid mixture to salt, sour, or bitter taste solutions produced decreases in licking responses when compared with the licking responses to the solutions in the absence of the FFAs. We conclude that FFAs may act in the oral cavity to depolarize taste receptor cells and therefore to increase the perceived intensity of concomitant tastants, thus contributing to the enhanced palatability associated with foods containing high dietary fat. 相似文献

AbstractEcotourism is a growing sector of the tourism industry, but few studies to date have quantified its impacts on local people, tourists and wildlife. We present a preliminary study on threat and affiliative behaviors of two groups of free-ranging Tibetan macaques (Macaca thibetana) as a function of habituation and tourist presence. Data indicate that the less habituated group spent less time within sight of tourists compared with the more habituated group. The more habituated group engaged in frequent affiliative behaviors while within sight of humans, whereas affiliative behavior was not observed in the less habituated group. The general pattern of threats consisted of adults primarily threatening juveniles and juveniles primarily threatening humans, possibly due to redirection. No clear pattern of threats as a function of tourist density emerged. Tourist feeding, although discouraged, potentially provided a catalyst for some aggression. Future research will focus on clarifying which human behaviors evoke specific threat responses from monkeys. These data will be used to refine the existing management plan for this monkey population. 相似文献

All memory functions have molecular bases, namely in signal reception and transduction, and in storage and recall of information. Thus, at all levels of organisation living organisms have some kind of memory. In plants one may distinguish two types. There are linear pathways from reception of signals and propagation of effectors to a type of memory that may be described by terms such as learning, habituation or priming. There is a storage and recall memory based on a complex network of elements with a high degree of integration and feedback. The most important elements envisaged are calcium waves, epigenetic modifications of DNA and histones, and regulation of timing via a biological clock. Experiments are described that document the occurrence of the two sorts of memory and which show how they can be distinguished. A schematic model of plant memory is derived as emergent from integration of the various modules. Possessing the two forms of memory supports the fitness of plants in response to environmental stimuli and stress. 相似文献

Differences in bold and shy personality on sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax were investigated between a population (wild) produced from wild‐brood fish and a population (selected) produced from selected‐brood fish. During the experiment (112 days), fish were reared under self‐feeding condition to characterize the feeding behaviour of each individual fish. Three risk‐taking tests (T1, T2 and T3 of 24 h with day–night alternation) were carried out at > 1 month intervals on 180 fish of each strain in order to monitor D. labrax behaviour over time and in relation to the light:dark period. A risk‐taking score was evaluated via a preference choice between a safe zone (without food) and a risky zone (potentially with food) by recording the number and the duration of individual passages through an opening in an opaque divider. Results showed that fish performed passages preferentially during the night period and that wild fish were generally bolder than selected fish during T1 and T2 but showed a decrease in risk taking during T3, contrary to selected fish which showed a constant increase in their risk‐taking behaviour. The phenotypic characteristics of the bold fish were different in the two strains: wild bold fish were the smallest within the wild strain and selected bold fish presented the higher growth rate within the selected strain. For both strains, these bold fish were also generally characterized by a high feed‐demand activity. Fish hunger state thus seemed to be the highest motivation for risk‐taking behaviour under the present conditions. Furthermore, behavioural variations over tests such as higher risk taking (number of passages) and faster exploratory responses (higher score emergence) could be interpreted as relevant indicators of the learning process and habituation. According to the results, however, no real difference in coping strategy between strains could be observed at this first stage of domestication and selection. 相似文献

Imidacloprid is a new insecticide from the family of the neonicotinoids, which interact with the insect nicotinic acetylcholine receptor. The effects of imidacloprid at a dose that does not affect sensory or motor functions are studied on non-associative learning abilities in the honeybee. The behavioral procedure is the habituation of the proboscis extension reflex (PER). Imidacloprid topically applied on the thorax (1 microl) at the doses of 5, 10, and 20 ng/bee induces an increase of the gustatory threshold defined as the lowest concentration of a sucrose solution applied to the antennae able to elicit the PER. The ability of the honeybee to move in an open-field-like apparatus is impaired at the doses of 2.5, 5, 10, and 20 ng/bee. These effects are amplified with time and reach a maximum 60 min after application. The lowest dose of 1.25 ng/bee has no effect on the gustatory function but increases the motor activity and facilitates the PER habituation independently of time. This result fits our hypothesis that a slight activation of the cholinergic system with a low dose of imidacloprid can facilitate a simple form of learning in the honeybee. 相似文献

Domoic acid is a neurotoxic metabolite of widely occurring algal blooms that has caused multiple marine animal stranding events. Exposure to high doses of domoic acid, a glutamate agonist, may lead to persistent medial temporal seizures and damage to the hippocampus. California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) are among the most visible and frequent mammalian victims of domoic acid poisoning, but rapid, reliable diagnosis in a clinical setting has proved difficult owing to the fast clearance of the toxin from the blood stream. Here, we show that the behavioural orienting responses of stranded sea lions diagnosed with domoic acid toxicosis habituate more slowly to a series of non-aversive auditory stimuli than do those of sea lions with no apparent neurological deficits. A signal detection analysis based on these habituation measures was able to correctly identify 50 per cent of subjects with domoic acid toxicosis while correctly rejecting approximately 93 per cent of controls, suggesting potential diagnostic merit. 相似文献

In Drosophila, the gustatory receptor (Gr) gene family contains 60 family members that encode 68 proteins through alternative splicing. Some gustatory receptors (Grs)
are involved in the sensing of sugars, bitter substrates, CO2, pheromones, and light. Here, we systematically examined the expression of all 68 Grs in abdominal neurons which project
to the abdominal ganglion of the central nervous system using the GAL4/UAS system. Gr gene expression patterns have been successfully analyzed in previous studies by using the GAL4/UAS system to drive reporter gene expression. Interestingly, 21 Gr-GAL4 drivers showed abdominal ganglion projection, and 18 of these 21 Gr-GAL4 drivers labeled multidendritic neurons of the abdominal wall. 4 drivers also labeled neuronal processes innervating the reproductive
organs. The peripheral expression of Gr-GAL4 drivers in abdominal multidendritic neurons or neurons innervating the reproductive organs suggests that these Grs have atypical
