Abstract. The influence of glucose, fructose and sucrose on oviposition site selection by Lobesia botrana is studied by combining behavioural and electrophysiological experiments. Oviposition choice assays, using surrogate grapes treated with grape berry surface extracts of Vitis vinifera cv. Merlot at different development stages, show that L. botrana females are most stimulated by extracts of mature berries containing the highest concentrations of glucose and fructose. Choice assays reveal that the oviposition response to these sugars is dose-dependant (with a threshold of the applied solution = 10 m m and a maximum stimulation at 1 m ) and that females are more sensitive to fructose than to glucose. Tarsal contact-chemoreceptor sensilla are unresponsive to stimulation with sugars but the ovipositor sensilla contain at least one neurone most sensitive to fructose and sucrose with a threshold of approximately 0.5 m m . Corresponding to the behavioural data, glucose is significantly less stimulatory to sensilla than fructose or sucrose. Previous studies have shown a modulatory influence of limbic forebrain areas, such as the central nucleus of the amygdala and lateral hypothalamus, on the activity of taste-responsive cells in the nucleus of the solitary tract (NST). The bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BST), which receives gustatory afferent information, also sends descending axons to the NST. The present studies were designed to investigate the role of the BST in the modulation of NST gustatory activity. Extracellular action potentials were recorded from 101 taste-responsive cells in the NST of urethane-anesthetized hamsters and analyzed for a change in excitability following bilateral electrical stimulation of the BST. The response of NST taste cells to stimulation of the BST was predominately inhibitory. Orthodromic inhibitory responses were observed in 29 of 101 (28.7%) NST taste-responsive cells, with four cells inhibited bilaterally. An increase in excitability was observed in seven of the 101 (6.9%) NST taste cells. Of the 34 cells showing these responses, 25 were modulated by the ipsilateral BST and 15 by the contralateral; four were inhibited bilaterally and two inhibited ipsilaterally and excited contralaterally. The duration of inhibitory responses (mean = 177.9 ms) was significantly longer than that of excitatory responses (35.4 ms). Application of subthreshold electrical stimulation to the BST during taste trials inhibited or excited the taste responses of every BST-responsive NST cell tested with this protocol. NST neurons that were most responsive to sucrose, NaCl, citric acid or quinine hydrochloride were all affected by BST stimulation, although citric acid-best cells were significantly more often modulated and NaCl-best less often modulated than expected by chance. These results combine with excitatory and inhibitory modulation of NST neurons by the insular cortex, lateral hypothalamus and central nucleus of the amygdala to demonstrate extensive centrifugal modulation of brainstem gustatory neurons. 相似文献

The diapriid wasp Trichopria drosophilae Perkins (Hymenoptera: Diapriidae) attacks and develops in puparia of the common fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster Meigen (Diptera: Drosophilidae). Host recognition of T. drosophilae was studied using both a morphological and behavioural approach. Scanning and electron microscopical observations of female parasitoid antennae showed the presence of two types of sensilla, which we named MGS1 and MGS2. The former are present on the ventral side of both the apical (A11) and sub-apical (A12) antennomeres, while the latter occur only on A12. Ultrastructural features suggest a gustatory function for these sensilla. Arena bioassays using intact or antennaectomised females and intact host puparia showed that MGS2 are necessary for achieving host acceptance. Further bioassays, where the host's anterior spiracles were covered with wax, led to a very low level of host acceptance. We suggest that the secretion produced by glands associated with the anterior spiracles act as a contact kairomone, which has to be perceived by MGS2 in order to elicit host recognition. The removal of both the female apical antennomeres (A12) led to the failure of the parasitoid to recognize its host. 相似文献

Abstract. Cuticular sensilla on newly hatched larvae of Gasterophilus intestinalis De Geer (Diptera: Gasterophilidae) and Oestrus ovis (L.) were studied by scanning electron microscopy. Two types of trichoid sensilla, two types of coeloconic sensilla and a pit sensillum were present on the thoracic and abdominal segments of G. intestinalis larvae. Sensilla on larvae of O. ovis were similar although only one type of trichoid sensillum was present. Total number of sensilla were higher for O. ovis than for G. intestinalis (248 v . 214). Variation in numbers of sensilla is consistent with the concept that increasing numbers of sensilla are associated with increasingly complex searching behaviour required to locate suitable habitats for development. 相似文献

The topography of long hair sensilla on the coxae of walking legs and pedipalps of the scorpionHeterometrus fulvipes is described. Identified long hair sensilla are cobalt filled, and central projections of sensory fibres are reported for
the first time in the suboesophageal ganglion of this scorpion. The afferent fibres arising from each long hair sensilla segregate
into ventral, dorsomedial and dorsal tracts upon their entry into the suboesophageal ganglion. These transverse tracts bifurcate
towards the middle of the leg neuromere and form three ipsilateral, plurisegrnental, longitudinal sensory pathways. Filling
a pair of bilaterally distributed long hair sensilla shows bilaterally arranged longitudinal afferent tracts interconnected
by distinct transverse commissures. Similar patterns of sensory projections are observed when filling homologous hairs on
other legs and pedipalps. Numerous fine collaterals arise from the longitudinal sensory trancts that subdivide and end in
small blebs presumed to be presynaptic endings. The dorsal and dorsomedial longitudinal tracts and their respective commissures
are in close association with the dendritic arborisations of pedipalpal and leg motor neurons, suggesting direct contact between
them. The probable functions of these multisegmental hair afferent pathways are discussed. 相似文献

One pair of gustatory sensilla was found on the epipharynx ofBombyx mori larvae, and some morphological and electrophysiological characteristics of the epipharyngeal sensilla were investigated.
They are sensilla coeloconica composed of a small papilla with a pore at the tip and a swelling of cuticle encircling the
papilla. Three bipolar neurons innervate each sensillum. One neuron is an inositol receptor which responds to inositol only.
Another cell responds with action potentials of relatively large amplitude to some feeding deterrent substances, such as strychnine
nitrate. The thresholds of these cells for inositol and strychnine nitrate are approximately 10−4 M and 10−7 M, respectively. At least two kinds of spikes can be observed when these sensilla are stimulated with some salts and acids.
Dose-response relationships and time courses of responses to inositol and strychnine nitrate were also examined in this study. 相似文献

Female fourth- and sixth-instar larvae, Choristoneura fumiferana, were tested individually for the response of the sugar cell on the lateral styloconic sensillum to 25 mM/l concentrations of 12 carbohydrates. The spruce budworm showed an age-related change in responsiveness of the sugar cell. The order of stimulating effectiveness for fourth-instars was melibiose > sucrose > raffinose.These storage di- and trisaccharides are present in the host plant at the beginning of budbreak. Sixth-instars responded to sucrose > fructose> m-inositol. These findings are in accordance with those of a previous behavioural study on feeding preferences of sixth-instars.
