The growth of the protozoanBlepherisma is stimulated by Lanthanum (La) at concentrations as low as 0.32 ppm. In mice Yttrium (Y) and Ytterbium (Yb) are absorbed, accumulated, and metabolized. Both rare earth elements (RE) exhibit a high affinity for teeth and bones, accumulation occurs and metabolism is slow. In the livers of RE-exposed mice, concentrations are variable. The liver is apparently capable of absorbing and discharging RE in a manner depending on metabolic activity. The main route of discharge for ingested REs is the alimentary canal. Exposure of pregnant mice to RE leads to rapid placental transfer of RE; 14.1% of the total amount of RE administered was detected in newborn mice. Young, developing organisms appear to be especially susceptible to RE accumulation.  相似文献

Celery (Apium graveolens L.) plants cv. Jason overwintered in a polythene tunnel flowered earlier and grew taller than similar plants given a 10-week cold-treatment at 5°C prior to transplanting in the same tunnel in mid-February. However, there was no significant difference in the yield of seeds obtained from both treatments, plants grown at a density of 4m-2 yielded less seeds than those at 2m-2, though the yield per unit area was slightly higher from the high density treatment. Treatment with 100 mgl-1 GA3 applied twice just prior to flowering and during anthesis increased flower stalk, flower pedicel and stamen length but delayed flower opening and seed ripening and decreased seed set and seed yield. Treatment with a mixture of 1000 mgl-1 GA4 and GA7 plus 1000 mgl-1 ethephon on three occasions during seed ripening decreased seed yield and reduced seed germination though those seeds capable of germinating were less dormant than seeds from untreated plants. The size distribution of seeds was unaffected by any treatment other than the preseeding spray with GA3 which reduced the percentage of medium-size seeds.  相似文献

LiCl stimulated the formation of inositol monophosphate in PC12 cells that had been exposed to nerve growth factor (NGF) for 4-5 days. Half-maximal accumulation was observed at approximately 8 mM LiCl. Stimulation of formation of inositol bisphosphate plus inositol trisphosphate was half-maximal at approximately 1 mM LiCl. With membranes isolated from PC12 cells differentiated with NGF, the hydrolysis of added phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PIP2) was stimulated by LiCl in a biphasic manner, with the first stimulation half-maximal at approximately 0.7 mM and the second half-maximal at approximately 15 mM LiCl. The apparent Km for PIP2 was lowered in the presence of 1.1 mM LiCl from approximately 200 to approximately 70 microM. Membranes from cells grown in the absence of NGF did not respond to LiCl. Although observations with intact cells are difficult to interpret without ambiguity, the results obtained with isolated membranes support our interpretation of the stimulatory action of lithium in the intact PC12 cells.  相似文献

The effects of bradykinin (BK) and lithium on the phosphatidylinositol cycle were examined in PC12 cells cultured for 20 h in the presence [PC12(+)] or in the absence [PC12(-)] of nerve growth factor (NGF). BK (1 microM) induced a small stimulation of the incorporation of myo-[2-3H]inositol into the lipids of PC12(-) cells and a three- to fourfold stimulation of such incorporation into the lipids of PC12 (+) cells. About 15 h of incubation with NGF and greater than 10 min of incubation with BK were needed for maximal stimulation of inositol incorporation by BK. In the presence of 25 mM LiCl, BK stimulated the inositol monophosphate levels nine-fold in PC12 (-) and 30-fold in PC12 (+) cells. After incubation for 20 h with NGF, an increased binding of [3H]BK to the PC12 (+) cells was observed at 4 degrees C. Exposure of the cells for 30 min to 25 mM LiCl enhanced the effect of BK on the inositol incorporation into total inositol lipids, especially in PC12(+) cells. In these cells, LiCl in the presence of BK also increased several-fold the intracellular levels of inositol bisphosphate and inositol trisphosphate.  相似文献

Juvenile Terebratalia transversa (Brachiopoda) metabolize carbohydrates in the anterior-most marginal mantle at a rate of 0.46 μM glucose/g/hr (in vitro incubation of mantle in C14-glucose in a carrying medium of 10-3 M non-radioactive glucose). The rate declines to 0.18μM glucose/g/hr in full-grown specimens. Carbohydrate metabolism in the marginal (anterior-most) mantle averages approximately 3.7 times greater than metabolism in (a portion of the ‘posterior’) mantle situated between the coelomic canals and the marginal mantle. This ratio remains constant in specimens of all sizes (i.e. an ontogenetic trend in the ratio is absent at p≤ 0.05). Organic acids are not detectable within the mantle (HPLC techniques) even after simulated anoxia (N2 bubbling during mantle incubation). Glucose metabolism in vitro declines in both the marginal and ‘posterior’ mantles during anoxia and the metabolic ratio between marginal/‘posterior’ mantles becomes 1/1. We found no difference (at p≤ 0.05) in mean metabolic activity or in sue-related metabolic trends among populations from depths ranging between mean sea level and 70 m. However, the activity within the ‘posterior’ mantle was more variable in specimens from 70 m than in those from shallower habitats (10 m - mean sea level). The size of the specimens analyzed was most variable in the groups obtained from the shallowest habitats and least variable at 70 m depth. Our results may help define the energetics of fossil as well as living brachiopod shell growth. Brachiopod shell growth is known to be very slow relative to that of bivalves and our results indicate that this is a result of the animals' slow metabolism. The inflation of the valves in T. transversa is, in part, a function of the high ratio of intermediary metabolism in the marginal vs‘posterior’ mantle (i.e. parallels the relative growth rates at the shell margin vs‘posterior’ areas). We found that the bivalve, Chlamys hastata, which is commonly associated with T. transversa, has a lower ratio of metabolic activities in the ventral/dorsal mantle areas than the brachiopod has in the anterior/posterior. The difference produces a flatter shell in the bivalve in accord with allometric principles. The higher metabolic rate in the marginal vs‘posterior’ brachiopod mantle and its more pronounced decline with anaerobiosis is reflected in the greater definition of growth increments in the outer shell layer. Our results do not support recent generalizations that correlate shell thickness of a wide variety of invertebrates inversely with metabolic rate. Growth rate as determined from width of shell growth increments is a better index of metabolic rate. Although the genetic basis of glucose metabolism is unknown, the observed metabolic variability is consistent with suggestions that populations of marine organisms living in stable offshore environments are genetically more variable but morphologically more uniform than populations from shallow water. Furthermore, our results support suggestions that bivalved molluscs and brachiopods are very different metabolically, but the data are neutral with respect to theories of competitive exclusion of the two taxa throughout geologic history.  相似文献

A venerid bivalve Phacosoma japonicum (Reeve) occurring commonly in the Japanese coastal area preserves periodic growth lines in the shell cross-section. Long-term shell growth patterns of this species have been traced for many individuals on the intertidal flat of the Seto Inland Sea, west Japan. Sclerochronological analysis of these individuals and specimens collected monthly shows that several growth cessation marks within their shells are formed during the winter of each year prior to spawning. Hence the marks were used for age and growth rate determinations. As large individuals showed little shell growth for more than two years after the formation of 7 or 8 annual increments, this species probably has a lifespan of more than ten years. Shell growth patterns of this species based on annual increments can be accurately approximated by a von Bertalanffy curve. The number of microgrowth increments formed during a year tends to decrease with age, although it varies markedly among specimens of the same age. Furthermore, even in summer during rapid shell growth, the microgrowth increments do not represent daily and/or sub-daily tidal rhythms in many specimens. The results of this study and those by several authors strongly suggest that the annual increments are the key for age and growth rate determinations of both living and fossil bivalve species.  相似文献

Summary Effects of variation in fire season on flowering of forbs and shrubs were studied experimentally in two longleaf pine forest habitats in northern Florida, USA. Large, replicated plots were burned at different times of the year, and flowering on each plot was measured over the twelve months following fire. While fire season had little effect on the number of species flowering during the year following fire, fires during the growing season decreased average flowering duration per species and increased synchronization of peak flowering times within species relative to fires between growing seasons. Fires during the growing season also increased the dominance of fall flowering forbs and delayed peak fall flowering. Differences in flowering resulting from variation in fire season were related to seasonal changes in the morphology of clonal forbs, especially fall-flowering composites. Community level differences in flowering phenologies indicated that timing of fire relative to environmental cues that induced flowering was important in determining flowering synchrony among species within the ground cover of longleaf pine forests. Differences in fire season produced qualitatively similar effects on flowering phenologies in both habitats, indicating plant responses to variation in the timing of fires were not habitat specific.  相似文献

Summary Lathyrus sylvestris is a pioneer legume often found in disturbed habitats. Mainly reproduced through vegetative propagation, this clonal species presents a system of ramets that remain connected for several years. The existence of carbon transfer among ramets within a clone has been studied using 14C in situ. Assimilate translocation from primary to secondary ramets was observed in all clones when the primary ramet was exposed to 14CO2. The amount of transfer ranged from trace up to 90% of the total 14C incorporated. However, in only half of the clones there was consistent enrichment of the secondary ramet (5 to 89%) suggesting that interramets transfer of carbon may be facultative. Furthermore, when significant export occurred from the primary ramet, it was always principally towards only one ramet even when the clone included more than one. The transfer of 14C from secondary to primary ramets was shown to be significant only when photosynthesis of the latter was decreased by shading. In this case import of carbon was never more than 60% of the incorporated 14C.No correlation was found between age or size of the ramets and the intensity of transfer. The shading effect let suppose that transfers are mainly driven by carbon limitation due to changing environmental conditions and not to the state of ramet maturity. The adaptative advantage of such facultative physiological integration between ramets of a clone is discussed.  相似文献

Summary Relationships between fine root growth, rates of litter decomposition and nutrient release were analysed in a mixed forest on Tierra Firme, a Tall Amazon Caatinga and a Low Bana on podsolized sands near San Carlos de Rio Negro. Fine root growth in the upper soil layers (root mat+10 cm upper soil) was considerably higher in the Tierra Firme forest (1117 g m-2 yr-1) than in tall Cattinga (120) and Bana (235). Fine root growth on top of the root mat was stimulated significantly by added N in Tall Caatinga and Low Bana forests, by P in Tierra Firme and Bana forests, and by Ca only in the Tierra Firme forest. Rate of fine root growth in Tierra Firme forest on fresh litter is strongly correlated with the Mg and Ca content of litter. Rate of litter decomposition was inversely related to % lignin and the lignin/N ratio of litter. Litter contact with the dense root mat of the Tierra Firme increased rates of disappearance for biomass, Ca and Mg as compared with litter permanently separated or lifted weekly from the root mat to avoid root attachment. Nitrogen concentration of decomposing litter increased in all forests, net N released being observed only in Caryocar glabrum and Aspidosperma megalocarpum of the Tierra Firme forest after one year of exposure. Results emphasize the differences in limiting nutrients in amazonian forest ecosystems on contrasting soil types: Tierra Firme forests are particularly limited by Ca and Mg, while Caatinga and Bana forests are limited mainly by N availability.  相似文献
