Our study provides the first data on the social organization of the golden brown mouse lemur, a nocturnal primate discovered in northwestern Madagascar in 1994. The study was carried out in two 6-month field periods during the dry season, covering time before and during the mating season. The spatial and temporal distributions of the sexes in the population were investigated by mark/recapture and radiotelemetry. Focal observations and the determination of sleeping associations provided further insights into the sociality of this solitary forager. High intra- and intersexual home-range overlaps occurred throughout the study. In general, individuals of both sexes had spatial access to more than one conspecific of the same and the opposite sex. We found no indication for spatial monopolization of females by certain males. These results suggest a dispersed multimale/multifemale system with a promiscuous mating pattern. Individuals showed temporal stability in their home range locations and interacted regularly with conspecifics. Five sleeping groups were identified during the study period: one female group and four mixed-sex groups. Even though sleeping sites were changed frequently, sleeping-group compositions remained stable over time. Thermoregulatory constraints are the most likely explanation for sleeping-group composition with members of both sexes in this species. Mixed-sex sleeping groups can be described as the basic social unit within this dispersed multimale/multifemale society.  相似文献

Prosimian lemurs differ fundamentally from anthropoid primates in many traits related to social structure. By exploring the demography of Milne-Edwards' sifakas (Propithecus diadema edwardsi), and comparing it to other well-studied primates, we explore the effect of demographic and life-history factors on social structure. Specifically, we compare lemur survivorship and fertility patterns to two published composite models: one created for New World and another created for Old World monkeys. Using longitudinal data collected on individual Propithecus diadema edwardsi from four study groups from 1986-2000 in Ranomafana National Park, Madagascar, we quantify 1) group composition, 2) birth seasonality, 3) interbirth interval, 4) life-table values, and 5) population growth estimates. The mortality, survivorship, and life-expectancy schedules indicate high infant and juvenile mortality. Fertility remains high until death. The intrinsic rate of increase and net reproductive rate indicate a shrinking population. We suggest that high mortality rather than low fertility causes the observed population decline. While sifaka survivorship closely resembles New World patterns, fertility resembles Old World patterns, i.e., like New World monkeys, few sifakas survive to reproductive age, and those that do, reproduce at a slow rate resembling the Old World pattern. This necessarily impacts social structure. An adult sifaka at the end of her lifespan will have one only daughter who survives to reproductive age, compared to 3.4 for New World or 2.7 for Old World monkeys. Demography limits the formation of large kin-based groups for sifakas, and survivorship and fertility patterns do not easily permit sifakas to form large same-sex family groups.  相似文献

Agrobacterium larrymoorei is a Gram-negative phytopathogenic bacterium, which produces tumours on Ficus benjamina plants and differs from other Agrobacteria both genetically and biochemically. The lipopolysaccharide (LPS) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of Agrobacteria. The present paper is the first report on the molecular primary structure of the core region of an Agrobacterium LPS. Archaea or archaebacteria are the microorganism living in extreme environments such as hot springs and salt lakes. The membrane is featured universally by lipids which possess saturated polyisoprenoid chains in the hydrophobic moiety. This paper concerns the surface properties of Langmuir membranes made of archaeal lipid models (AL) bearing a phytanyl group or (3RS, 7R, 11R)-3,7,11,15-tetramethylhexadecyl group. All of the AL provide a Langmuir membrane on an air-water interface with an abnormally low surface tension (32-37 mN/m at 20-70 degrees C), while the conventional lipids having n-alkyl chains give membranes of 54-56 mN/m. The abnormally low energy surface of AL lipids is considered to arise from the bulky and fluid polyisoprenoid chain.  相似文献

Abstract.— The role played by gene transpositions during the evolution of eukaryotic genomes is still poorly understood and indeed has been analyzed in detail only in nematodes. In Drosophila , a limited number of transpositions have been detected by comparing the chromosomal location of genes between different species. The relative importance of gene transposition versus other types of chromosomal rearrangements, for example, inversions, has not yet been evaluated. Here, we use physical mapping to perform an extensive search for long-distance gene transpositions and assess their impact during the evolution of the Drosophila genome. We compare the relative order of 297 molecular markers that cover 60% of the euchromatic fraction of the genome between two related Drosophila species and conclude that the frequency of gene transpositions is very low, namely one order of magnitude lower than that of nematodes. In addition, gene transpositions seem to be events almost exclusively associated with genes of repetitive nature such as the Histone gene complex ( HIS-C ).  相似文献

Group II introns are self-splicing RNA molecules that also behave as mobile genetic elements. The secondary structure of group II intron RNAs is typically described as a series of six domains that project from a central wheel. Most structural and mechanistic analyses of the intron have focused on domains 1 and 5, which contain the residues essential for catalysis, and on domain 6, which contains the branch-point adenosine. Domains 2 and 3 (D2, D3) have been shown to make important contributions to intronic activity; however, information about their function is quite limited. To elucidate the role of D2 and D3 in group II ribozyme catalysis, we built a series of multi-piece ribozyme constructs based on the ai5gamma group II intron. These constructs are designed to shed light on the roles of D2 and D3 in some of the major reactions catalyzed by the intron: 5'-exon cleavage, branching, and substrate hydrolysis. Reactions with these constructs demonstrate that D3 stimulates the chemical rate constant of group II intron reactions, and that it behaves as a form of catalytic effector. However, D3 is unable to associate independently with the ribozyme core. Docking of D3 is mediated by a short duplex that is found at the base of D2. In addition to recruiting D3 into the core, the D2 stem directs the folding of the adjacent j(2/3) linker, which is among the most conserved elements in the group II intron active site. In turn, the D2 stem contributes to 5'-splice site docking and ribozyme conformational change. Nucleotide analog interference mapping suggests an interaction between the D2 stem and D3 that builds on the known theta-theta' interaction and extends it into D3. These results establish that D3 and the base of D2 are key elements of the group II intron core and they suggest a hierarchy for active-site assembly.  相似文献

Mammalian group IIA secretory phospholipase A2 (sPLA2-IIA) generates prostaglandin D2 (PGD2) and triggers apoptosis in cortical neurons. However, mechanisms of PGD2 generation and apoptosis have not yet been established. Therefore, we examined how second messengers are involved in the sPLA2-IIA-induced neuronal apoptosis in primary cultures of rat cortical neurons. sPLA2-IIA potentiated a marked influx of Ca2+ into neurons before apoptosis. A calcium chelator and a blocker of the L-type voltage-sensitive Ca2+ channel (L-VSCC) prevented neurons from sPLA2-IIA-induced neuronal cell death in a concentration-dependent manner. Furthermore, the L-VSCC blocker ameliorated sPLA2-IIA-induced morphologic alterations and apoptotic features such as condensed chromatin and fragmented DNA. Other blockers of VSCCs such as N type and P/Q types did not affect the neurotoxicity of sPLA2-IIA. Blockers of L-VSCC significantly suppressed sPLA2-IIA-enhanced Ca2+ influx into neurons. Moreover, reactive oxygen species (ROS) were generated prior to apoptosis. Radical scavengers reduced not only ROS generation, but also the sPLA2-IIA-induced Ca2+ influx and apoptosis. In conclusion, we demonstrated that sPLA2-IIA potentiates the influx of Ca2+ into neurons via L-VSCC. Furthermore, the present study suggested that eicosanoids and ROS generated during arachidonic acid oxidative metabolism are involved in sPLA2-IIA-induced apoptosis in cooperation with Ca2+.  相似文献

We collected systematic data on the home range and day ranges of one group of 57–63 muriquis (Brachyteles arachnoides hypoxanthus) at the Estação Biológica de Caratinga, Minas Gerais, Brazil from September 1998–July 1999, and compared them with similar data collected 15 years ago when the 23–27 individuals in the group traveled together as a cohesive unit. Home range size increased from 168 ha to 309 ha, reflecting an expansion into areas of the forest that were previously unutilized and consistent with the positive relationship predicted between group size and home range size. By contrast, muriquis exhibited remarkable seasonal and interannual stability in their day ranges. Day ranges, which were calculated from 144 days with 8 h of observation, averaged 1,313 ± 573 m (median = 1,206 m). Day ranges did not vary with the size of subgroups, defined as independent individuals that traveled with one another out of contact with other group members. Subgroups were significantly larger during the rainy season (mean = 41.8 ± 12.7, median = 46.0 individuals, n = 72) than the dry season (mean = 36.6 ± 13.25, median = 39.5 individuals, n = 72). Subgroups were also larger than the size of the entire group during the previous study, yet their day ranges are indistinguishable. The stability in muriqui day ranges is consistent with predictions for folivorous primates in which other indicators of intragroup feeding competition, such as female dominance relationships, are also absent. We attribute the transition from cohesive to fluid grouping patterns to limits on the number of individuals that can coordinate their movements when they spread out while foraging and suggest that seasonal differences in subgroup sizes without corresponding adjustments in day ranges reflect seasonal differences in the distribution of preferred foods coupled with the effects of reproductive seasonality on muriqui grouping patterns.  相似文献
