Scarce information is available on the biological reasons why a small subset of introduced species can effectively establish within novel ecosystems. A comparison of early growth traits can help to explain the better performance of alien invasive species versus native co-occurring species. In one year-long experiment, we compared the early life stages of Ampelodesmos mauritanicus (Poir.) Dur. & Schinz (Amp), a native perennial Mediterranean grass, and Pennisetum setaceum (Forssk.) Chiov (Penn), an emerging invader grass in sub-arid and Mediterranean-climate areas. The Penn seedlings grew significantly faster and were approximately 2.5 times taller than the Amp seedlings, reaching a final average height of 90 cm. The shoot and root dry masses of the Penn seedlings were, respectively, more than 14 times and 4 times higher than those of the Amp seedlings. As a consequence, the shoot:root ratio was significantly higher in Penn, which resulted in a greater allocation of resources to the photosynthetic organs. Penn showed a more rapid life cycle compared with Amp. Penn produced seeds 9 months after sowing while no spikelet was produced by Amp until the end of the experiment. As a consequence, Penn may gain a reproductive advantage due to rapid seed dissemination. Ultimately, a suite of peculiar early growth traits makes Penn an aggressive competitor against Amp, which is an important floristic element of native Mediterranean grasslands. Penn seems better suited than Amp in colonizing frequently disturbed sites with fluctuating resource availability or irregular rainfall distribution and Penn is gradually replacing Amp.  相似文献

Aims Shrub encroachment has taken place in many of China’s northern grasslands. This study attempts to answer the following questions: which plant communities are present in these shrub-encroached grasslands (SEGs)? What are the species richness and composition of these communities? Which environmental factors determine the spatial distribution thereof?  相似文献

Cynodon dactylon is one of the five most important invasive alien species worldwide. It is the invasive alien species with the broadest distribution range in Uruguay, and its expansion is frequently associated with disturbances. Since natural grasslands are facing processes of productive intensification, C. dactylon represents a threat as it could displace native species. However, the mechanisms that explain its invasion success remain unclear. The objective of this study was to analyse interspecific interactions under low nutrient conditions between C. dactylon and two species that are native to the Campo grasslands in Uruguay. Specifically, we assessed differences in the components of competitive ability effects and responses (or tolerance) as possible mechanisms involved in C. dactylon invasiveness. We performed a greenhouse experiment in pots with low-nutrient substrate assessing pair-wise interactions between C. dactylon, Mnesithea selloana and Paspalum notatum plus control pots consisting of single individual of each species. The invasive species showed greater competitive ability than both native grasses, as it reduced their below and above-biomass. Conversely, the size of C. dactylon plants interacting with native species was similar to that of single C. dactylon plants growing alone (controls). This reveals that the greater competitive ability of the invasive species was due to a greater tolerance to grow with neighbouring plants. The reason underlying this tolerance was a marked increase in biomass allocation towards stolons and leaves, at the expense of roots. Conversely, native species barely changed their shoot-root allocation pattern when interacting with neighbours. Furthermore, C. dactylon induced reproductive development solely when interacting with neighbours. Along with the fact that the potential growth rate of the invasive and native species was quite similar, these results suggest that sensitive and rapidly triggered shade avoidance responses could be one mechanism involved in the invasion success of C. dactylon.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of different grazing pressures on the activity and diversity of soil bacteria. We performed a long-term experiment in Eldorado do Sul, southern Brazil, that assessed three levels of grazing pressure: high pressure (HP), with 4% herbage allowance (HA), moderate pressure (MP), with 12% HA, and low pressure (LP), with 16% HA. Two reference areas were also assessed, one of never-grazed native vegetation (NG) and another of regenerated vegetation after two years of grazing (RG). Soil samples were evaluated for microbial biomass and enzymatic (β-glucosidase, arylsulfatase and urease) activities. The structure of the bacterial community and the population of diazotrophic bacteria were evaluated by RFLP of the 16S rRNA and nifH genes, respectively. The diversity of diazotrophic bacteria was assessed by partial sequencing of the 16S rDNA gene. The presence of grazing animals increased soil microbial biomass in MP and HP. The structures of the bacterial community and the populations of diazotrophic bacteria were altered by the different grazing managements, with a greater diversity of diazotrophic bacteria in the LP treatment. Based on the characteristics evaluated, the MP treatment was the most appropriate for animal production and conservation of the Pampa biome.  相似文献
