The soil seed‐banks in the main natural vegetation patches that make up mountain grasslands on granite substrates in central Argentina were studied. The main natural vegetation types are moist swards, tall‐tussock grasslands and stony grasslands. Ten compound soil samples from each community at two soil depths (0–5 and 5–10 cm) were taken. The density of soil seed‐banks was highest in moist swards, intermediate in stony grasslands and lowest in tall‐tussock grasslands. Low levels of similarity were found between the established vegetation and total soil seed‐bank in tall‐tussock grasslands and stony grasslands, but the similarity was higher in swards. In all three communities the seed‐bank was most frequently transient in nature. Short‐term persistent and long‐term persistent seed‐banks were less frequent. Regeneration from the seed‐banks after disturbance is expected to differ among communities on different edaphic patches. On the basis of the density and longevity of the soil seed‐banks and the similarity to the established vegetation, potential for in situ regeneration should be lower in tall‐tussock grasslands, intermediate in stony grasslands and higher in moist swards.  相似文献

Host responses to AMF from plots differing in plant diversity   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Increased plant species richness in a plant community leads to changes in the composition of the associated arbuscular-mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) community. We tested whether AMF from plots with increased plant diversity cause significant differences in the growth of Lespedeza capitata, Schizachyrium scoparium or Liatris aspera. Seedlings of each were transplanted into pasteurized soil inoculated with soil from their own monocultures, or from plots with one, seven, or 15 additional plant species. In addition, inocula from S. scoparium and L. capitata monocultures were tested for reciprocal growth effects. Inocula from plots containing the native tallgrass prairie species Lespedeza capitata showed increasing AMF species richness and spore density with increasing plant diversity; this was not true with plots containing Schizachyrium scopariumor Liatris aspera. All three species responded to AMF inoculation with increased growth and Cu concentrations, and lowered Mn concentrations compared to non-inoculated control plants. Increasing the plant diversity of the inoculum source-plots significantly affected plant weights of L. capitata, but not of the other two host plants. Both S. scoparium and L. capitata showed increases in growth with inoculum from S. scoparium monocultures compared to that from L. capitata monocultures. Spore density of inoculum source plots was associated with subsequent plant growth or nutrient content only in Lespedeza plots, which contained considerably fewer spores, plant cover, and root biomass in plots with lower plant diversity.  相似文献

Size-related deterioration of semi-natural grassland fragments in Sweden   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Abstract. One of the most dramatic landscape changes during the 20th century in Sweden, like in most of Europe, has been the reduction and fragmentation of semi-natural grasslands. Using a set of remnant semi-natural grasslands, chosen to be as similar as possible, but differing in size, we have examined whether size of remnant fragments of traditionally managed semi-natural grasslands in Sweden is related to patterns of species richness and composition. We focused on edge-to-interior relationships, since we expected that a possible impact from invasive habitat generalists would be manifested in a gradient from the edge of fragments to their interior. We found no relationship between size of grassland fragments and (a) overall species richness, (b) species richness at different spatial scales, and (c) abundance of some typical invader species or species characteristic of semi-natural grasslands. However, the results indicated that larger grasslands have a comparatively larger number of species in the edges, whereas the opposite pattern was found in smaller grasslands. The similarity in species composition between the edge and the interior of the pastures also increased with grassland size. Thus, even though the overall species richness is still unaffected by reduction in grassland fragment size, the edges of smaller grasslands show signs of degradation, i.e. reduction in species richness and a decreased similarity to the grassland interior. We suggest that these kinds of effects may be early signs of fragmentation effects that in the future will result in species loss even if the present distribution of semi-natural grasslands is maintained.  相似文献

We measured net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE) in Panamá over C4 pasture plots that varied in grazing intensity. After adjusting for variation in light, there were noticeable effects of grazing‐related variables on CO2 exchange that were largely dependent on the developmental stage of the plant canopy. Above‐ground productivity was positively related to grazing intensity (r2=0.30). Two experimentally grazed fields had significantly lower standing crop biomass but no significant difference in CO2 uptake (24.2 μmol/m2/s) compared with two ungrazed fields (20.3 μmol/m2/s). Grazed fields had significantly lower ecosystem respiration rates (10.3 μmol/m2/s) than did ungrazed fields (17.6 μmol/m2/s). These results suggest that, although these pastures were possible sources of CO2 during the time intervals sampled, the size of the sources tended to be dampened by cattle grazing through reductions in ecosystem respiration. Thus, it appears that disturbance caused by cattle grazing will not always result in an increase in CO2 release from tropical pastures to the atmosphere.  相似文献

The conservation value of grassland and reed marsh habitats in Belgium was determined on the basis of dolichopodid communities (Diptera: Dolichopodidae). Four grassland and one reed marsh sites within the 'Bourgoyen-Ossemeersen' Nature Reserve (B.O.) (Ghent) were sampled with white water traps from March 1993 until March 1994. Subsequently, these soil faunas were compared with those of reed marsh habitats in 'Het Meetjeslandse Krekengebied' (M.K.) sampled in 1990. Comparisons of species communities were carried out by means of multivariate analysis techniques. The DCA and CCA on the B.O. sites produced a clear separation between the grassland and the reed marsh communities. Light intensity and soil humidity were among the most important factors determining species distributions. The comparison between the B.O. and M.K. communities revealed that sampling sites were clustered according to their geographical location rather than to habitat type. Overall species richness and diversity was not significantly different between grasslands and reed marshes. However, conservation quality estimates of the sites using the Site Conservation Quality Index (SCQI) indicated that reed marshes comprise a considerably larger number of rare and Red Data Book species. Moreover, besides typical reed marsh-inhabiting species, reed marshes also house species with other ecological affinities sometimes in rather high abundance. As a result, reed marshes are considered highly valuable for the survival of several wetland dolichopodid species.  相似文献

Concerns over the relative stability or sensitivity of biologicallydiverse ecosystems in relation to environmental change include the effects ofland-use intensification on diverse plant communities. This paper examines thesensitivity of a floristically diverse flood-meadow under hay-cutting managementto nitrogen enrichment, this being a key component of intensified agriculturalmanagement. A gradient of fertilizer nitrogen treatments was applied to a sitein the Czech Republic in two successive seasons and plant community response wasmonitored using measures of species diversity, cover and above-ground primaryproduction. Results show that diversity was supported by annual hay-cuttingmanagement and that the community was highly sensitive to nitrogen enrichment.Fertilization at rates consistent with intensive agricultural practice reducedspecies richness significantly within eight weeks, with forbs and mossparticularly susceptible. The cover and biomass of some grasses were stimulatedby fertilization until constrained by litter accumulation. Over two seasons,fertilization significantly reduced species diversity and simplified communitystructure as inter-specific competitive relations shifted. Biologically diverseflood-meadows therefore seem to be vulnerable to agricultural intensificationand other human activities that promote enhanced nitrogen levels.  相似文献

Abstract Endozoochory has proven to be a highly effective mechanism in the dispersal of viable seeds in Mediterranean grasslands. We studied the effect of cattle dung application on species richness, particularly on the reintroduction of species lost after abandonment. Sown and control plots were monitored for 3 years after dung sowing. We found a significant increase in small‐scale richness, which may be attributed to the treatment, with the inclusion of species detected in the dung and in the grazed pasture. The differences in richness and floristic composition diminished over time. This experiment proves the potential utility of this treatment for the restoration of species richness in abandoned pastures, although supplementary steps are necessary, including further sowing and/or shrub cutting in subsequent years.  相似文献
