Decline of Globodera rostochiensis populations occurring naturally in soil and those added to potato hills and furrow centers in nylon bags was correlated with root weight of Hudson, Rosa, and Katahdin potatoes at two locations in New York. Cysts in bags were added to soil at planting and at 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 weeks after emergence (AE). Fallow decline required only 2-4 weeks in soil and did not increase with time. Decline due to growing potatoes was greater in hills than in furrow centers, and resistant Hudson potatoes stimulated greater nematode hatch for longer times in both hills and furrows than did resistant Rosa and susceptible Katahdin. Potato root diffusate (PRD) was produced in highest concentration early in the season; decreased egg hatch with time was probably the result of declining PRD production and inactivation of PRD in soil. Decreasing potato row spacing from 92 cm to 46 and 23 cm between rows increased G. rostochiensis decline in furrow centers, with the majority of decline occurring within 1-3 weeks AE. Replanting potatoes after 1 week of trap crop growth failed to favor population reduction over a single full season crop. 相似文献

The feeding ecology of the Pacific Golden Plover (Pluvialis fulva) in the Sg. Labu river near the Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve on the west coast of the Malay Peninsula was studied in March and April of 1994. The plovers had two foraging sites, a polychaete-feeding and a mussel-feeding site, which were located at a distance of about 1 km from each other. The tidal height of the polychaete-feeding site was higher than that of the mussel-feeding site, which was not exposed at the neap tide. Therefore, the polychaete-feeding site, which was exposed during every low tide, was better for food collection than the mussel-feeding site. The individuals that undertook more frequent changes in feeding sites had a lower intake rate of polychaetes in the polychaete-feeding site. There were two classes in the feeding order, and the lower class had to feed on mussels in addition to polychaetes to obtain sufficient food.For polychaete-eaters, the total number of steps during a feeding bout was significantly higher and the number of pecks was significantly lower than those of mussel-eaters. Usually, mussel-eaters spent more time preening and resting than polychaete-eaters, although the former had less time for feeding than the latter had because of the shorter exposure time of the mussel-feeding site. This means that mussel-eaters may have had higher feeding efficiency than polychaete-eaters, regardless of their preference for polychaetes as a diet.Polychaete larvae frequently settled on mussel beds and their populations became established after the collapse of mussel populations. The Namib Desert golden mole (Eremitalpa granti namibensis) is morphologically, physiologically and behaviourally specialized for living in the harsh loose‐sand desert. Ecological studies have relied on visually tracking animals on the surface of sand dunes. A radio tag would allow individuals to be more reliably located, even while under the sand. We developed a radio attachment and gathered preliminary data on winter habitat use by six individuals during 21 days. We compare data from previous studies and suggest that the greater diurnal activity, smaller home ranges, and more restricted movement patterns that we found are related to the unusual thermal and metabolic biology of Eremitalpa. 相似文献

The p16(INK4A)/CDKN2A tumor suppressor gene is known to be inactivated in up to 98% of human pancreatic cancer specimens and represents a potential target for novel therapeutic intervention. Chemically induced pancreatic tumors in Syrian golden hamsters have been demonstrated to share many morphologic and biological similarities with human pancreatic tumors and this model may be appropriate for studying therapies targeting p16(INK4A)/CDKN2A. The purpose of this study was to investigate the fundamental biochemistry of hamster P16 protein. Using both in vivo and in vitro approaches, the CDK4 binding affinity, kinase inhibitory activity, and thermodynamic stability of hamster and human P16 proteins were evaluated. Furthermore, a structural model of hamster P16 protein was generated. These studies demonstrate that hamster P16 protein is biochemically indistinguishable from human P16 protein. From a biochemical perspective, these data strongly support the study of p16-related pancreatic oncogenesis and cancer therapies in the hamster model. 相似文献

We recorded, for the first time, byssal hairs in the Asian freshwater bivalve Limnoperna fortunei from the Paraná River system. We analysed the presence of hairs and their distribution on the shell in relation to habitat and shell size in 12 sites. Hairs were present in lentic habitats associated with macrophytes or organic matter, but were absent in lotic environments. The proportion of mussels with hairs was negatively correlated with current velocity. Hairs were more frequent and abundant in larger mussels. In general, the hairs are a similar length over the bivalve and almost entirely cover the shells in≥60% in lentic habitats. The projections allow L. fortunei to be camouflaged among the roots of macrophytes or coarse organic matter, assisting in avoiding visual predators. The clear-cut separation of L. fortunei populations into two different groups could be associated with phenotypic plasticity in this species. 相似文献

In the golden egg bug (Phyllomorpha laciniata) eggs are laid mainly on the backs of conspecifics, and in many habitats eggs do not survive unless carried by bugs. Bugs are covered with small spines that may make them unpalatable. They are also cryptic, at least if not carrying eggs. We used domestic chicks as predators to examine if egg carrying influences susceptibility to avian predators. The special morphology of the bugs and/or possible chemical defense may make the bugs unattractive, as chicks that picked up bugs often rejected them. Eggs made bugs more attractive to chicks. The total number of attacks and the probability of being attacked at all increased significantly when bugs carried eggs. If mating with an egg-carrying bug, a female without eggs suffered as much as her egg-carrying partner when attacked. This study, together with previous results on ant predation, suggests that carrying eggs as well as mating with an egg-loadedbug are costly in terms of predation risk. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Observations of European starlings in France, Germany and Australia reveal surprising high similarities in the individual repertoires of whistled songs. The structure of the whistles enabled us to recognize a number of categories, in which some species-specific themes were found everywhere. They appear with the same general characteristics and variation ranges in all populations. There seems therefore to be a basic species-specific repertoire common to all males, who have also a number of additional individual themes which characterize each male in its colony. These individual themes show also common characteristics in the different populations. The results suggest that a mechanism has evolved which canalizes the patterns to be learned. The existence of such a universal innate species-specific repertoire has also to be related to functional aspects and to the complicated dialects found in this species. 相似文献
