In previous screening tests the two wild crop relatives Avena macrostachya (Bal., ex Coss. et Dur.) and Hordeum bogdani (Wil.) demonstrated a high degree of resistance to the aphid Rhopalosiphum padi (L.). In a choice situation using wild and cultivated oats and barley, alate aphids settled in lower numbers on the wild species. The results were, however, variable in the Avena combination. Nymph production was significantly higher, development time shorter and adult weight higher on the cultivated varieties. From the third instar and onwards the excretion of honeydew was significantly lower on the resistant plants. In general the honeydew contained less than 1% free amino acids although excreta from H. vulgare contained 3.5%. The percentage of free amino acids found in the honeydew was similar for all plant species (5.2–7.6%) except for H. vulgare, on which the aphids excreted 22% of the amounts ingested. Amino acids excreted in high proportions on all plants included asparagine, -aminobutyric acid, glutamic acid, and glycine. Tissue sectioning did not reveal any obvious mechanical barriers to stylet penetration. The potential use of these wild species as sources for aphid resistance breeding in oats and barley is considered.
Résumè Lors d'examens systématiques antérieurs, Avena macrostachya (Bal. ex Coss. & Dur.) et Hordeum bogdani (Wil.) ont présenté une résistance élevée au puceron Rhopalosiphum padi (L.). Lorsqu'ils avaient un choix comprenant de l'avoine et de l'orge cultivés, les pucerons ailés ont atterri en nombres moins importants sur les espèces sauvages. Les résultats étaient cependant variables dans le complexe avoine. La production de nymphes et le poids des adultes étaient plus élevés sur espèces cultivées, ainsi que la durée du développement était plus longue sur les espèces sauvages. A partir du troisième stade, l'excrétion de miellat a été significativement plus faible sur les espèces résistantes. En général, le miellat y contenait moins de 1% d'acides aminés bien que sur H. vulgare il en contînt 3,5%. Les pourcentages d'acides aminés libres du miellat étaient semblables sur toutes les plantes (5,2–7,6%), à l'exception de H. vulgare sur lequel les pucerons excrétaient 22% des taux ingérés. Les acides aminés excrétés en fortes quantités sur les différentes plantes, comprenaient l'asparagine, l'acide -aminobutyrique, l'acide glutamique et la glycine. Des coupes de tissus n'ont révélé aucun obstacle mécanique clair à la pénétration des stylets. Two strains of Drosophila melanogaster represent the extremes in resistance and sensitivity to the lethal effects of CdCl2. The strain containing the mutations vermilion and brown (v; bw) and the strain Austin had LC50's of 3.3 and 1.3mm CdCl2, respectively. The three major chromosomes from these two strains were assorted genetically into the six possible combinations. The measured LC50's for CdCl2 for these six genotypes fell into two groups according to the X chromosome; those containing the X chromosome from v; bw had LC50's 0.5–1.0mm greater than those in which the X chromosome was from Austin. Since the parent strains differed by 2mm, we suggest that the X chromosome is a major, but not the sole, site of genes to produce resistance to CdCl2. When 109Cd was in the diet the uptake by v; bw and Austin over 2 days was the same. After 4 days of uptake, the Austin strain excreted the 109Cd five times faster than v; bw but the six genotypes did not differ appreciably in excretion rate from one another and resembled the sensitive parent Austin more than the resistant one. Two species of jute plants Corchorus capsularis L. (cv. JRC 212) and C. olitorius L. (cv. JRO 632) were subjected to water stress for 2 and 4 days by withholding water. The relative water content (RWC) decreased in both plants under water stress but to a greater extent in C. olitorius . The C. olitorius seedlings also showed greater membrane injury than C. capsularis seedlings under water stress as was evident from injury index data. Water stress increased glycolate oxidase (EC 1.1.3.1.) activity more in C. olitorius than in C. capsularis . The activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD, EC 1.15.1.1.) and catalase (EC 1.11.1.6.) decreased under water stress and their decrease was higher in C. olitorius than in C capsularis . The level of hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxidation also increased in both plants under water stress and the increase was higher in C. olitorius than in C. capsularis seedlings. Under comparable external water stress, C. capsularis seedlings showed lower membrane damage, lower H2 O2 accumulation and lower lipid peroxidation than C. olilorius which may be taken as indicative of higher water stress tolerance capacity of the former. 相似文献

A conventional balance study with 48 male weanling rats was conducted to determine true absorption and endogenous fecal excretion
of manganese (Mn) in relation to dietary Mn supply, following the procedures of a previously adapted isotope dilution technique.
After 10 d on a diet with 1.5 ppm Mn, eight animals each were assigned to diets containing 1.5, 4.5, 11.2, 35, 65, or 100
ppm Mn on a dry-matter basis. Three days later, each rat was given an intramuscular54Mn injection and kept on treatment for a balance period of 16 d.
Apparent Mn absorption assessed for the final 8 d, averaged 8.6 μg/d without significant treatment effects, although Mn intake
ranged from 18.6 to 1200 μg/d, in direct relation to dietary Mn concentrations. Mean fecal excretion of endogenous Mn for
the six treatments was 0.9, 2.7, 7.4, 11.0, 16.3, and 17.7 μg/d, respectively. These values delineate the rates to which true
absorption exceeded apparent rates. True absorption, as percent of Mn intake, averaged 28.7, 15.9, 11.7, 6.1, 3.4, and 2.0,
respectively, as compared with mean values of 23.9, 10.9, 6.2, 3.4, 1.2, and 0.5 for percent apparent absorption. It was concluded
that both true absorption and endogenous fecal excretion markedly responded to Mn nutrition and that the reduction in the
efficiency of true absorption was quantitatively the most significant homeostatic response for maintaining stable Mn concentrations

The influence of dietary supplementation with thiamine on lead (Pb) contents in blood and tissues, blood δ-aminolevulinic
acid dehydratase (δ-ALAD) activity, and urinary excretion of δ-aminolevulinic acid (δ-ALA) was evaluated in male Sprague-Dawley
rats. Groups of randomly selected animals were given a thiamine-deficient diet, a diet containing normal thiamine (20 mg/kg),
or a thiamine-supplemented diet (50 mg/kg), along with control drinking water or water containing 100 ppm Pb, for 4 mo. Animals
fed the thiamine-supplemented diet (50 mg/kg) and Pb showed decreased urinary excretion of δ-ALA and a decreased inhibition
of δ-ALAD activity in blood compared to those given Pb with normal thiamine diet. The liver, kidney, and blood of rats receiving
supplemental thiamine also contained significantly less Pb than the other two treatment groups given Pb-containing water.
The protective effect of thiamine against Pb toxicity may be attributed to its interference with retention of the metal in
body tissue, possibly resulting from the formation of excretable thiamine-lead complexes. 相似文献

Extracellular release of dissolved organic compounds by the bluegreen algal community of a brackish marsh was studied using 14C techniques. Mannitol and trehalose were identified as the most commonly released compounds. The proportions of these two extracellular compounds varied in response to light intensity and the water potential of the environment. In rye leaves ( Secale cereale L. cv. Petkus "Kustro") bleached in the presence of the chlorosis-inducing herbicides aminotriazole, haloxidine, San 6706 or difunone in white light of 54.2 W m-2 (5000 lx), catalase activity was very low. In addition, the activities of glycolate oxidase and hydroxypyruvate reductase were strongly diminished in treatments with San 6706 and difunone. The lowering of the peroxisomal enzyme activities was observed in red, but not in blue light and did not occur after treatment with the non-bleaching pyridazinone derivative San 9785. The deficiencies of the peroxisomal enzymes did not appear to be involved in the initiation of the chlorosis. Instead they are probably produced as secondary consequences of the bleaching. Low peroxisomal enzyme activities were also obtained without herbicide treatment by growing the leaves in an atmosphere of 2% O2 and 3% CO2 , but in this case were not accompanied by an increased sensitivity of the Chl to photooxidative bleaching. The peroxisomal enzymes reached as high activities as in untreated controls when the herbicide-treated leaves were grown at a low light intensity of 0.106 W m-2 (10 lx). After transfer of herbicide-treated leaves grown under 0.106 W m-2 to 306 W m-2 (30 000 lx), catalase was strongly inactivated, even at 0°C. In treatments with San 6706 and difunone the increase of the activities of glycolate oxidase and hydroxypyruvate reductase was either stopped, remaining unchanged, or the enzymes were slightly inactivated after exposure to 306 W m-2 (30 000 lx). SYNOPSIS. We demonstrated previously microbodies in Euglena gracilis grown in the dark on 2-carbon substrates. We have now established in Euglena the particulate nature of enzymes known in other organisms to be localized in microbodies (glyoxysomes and leaf peroxisomes). On a linear sucrose gradient the glyoxylate cycle enzymes band together at a nigner equilibrium density (1.20 g/cm3) than mitochondrial marker enzymes (1.17 g/cm3), establishing the existence in Euglena of glyoxysomes similar to those of higher plants. Glyoxylate (hydroxypyruvate) reductase and, under certain conditions, also glycolate dehydrogenase co-band with the glyoxylate cycle enzymes, suggesting that Euglena glyoxysomes, like those of higher plants, may contain peroxisomal-type enzymes. Catalase, an enzyme characteristic of microbodies from a variety of sources, was not detected in Euglena. 相似文献
