Monitoring global change with phenology: The case of the spring green wave   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The centuries-old practice of recording plant and animal events that take place at specific times each year (phenology) should play an important role in monitoring mid-latitude global changes. At least three problems related to the detection of biosphere changes could be investigated using this information. Firstly, the technique can be generalized from the local to global scale. Secondly, an integrated approach could be developed to represent biome diversity effectively. Lastly, physical mechanisms responsible for the events can be deduced in order to incorporate the phenological information into global-scale models, and detect changes in related environmental factors. With these goals in mind, regional phenological data collection networks were initiated in eastern North America during the early 1960s, using cloned lilacs and several species of honeysuckle. This paper reviews research projects which address the problems outlined above, using first leaf data (associated with spring green-up or green wave in mid-latitudes) gathered from these networks. The results of such studies in North America have demonstrated the potential of phenology as an efficient monitor of global change throughout mid-latitude regions. Future research efforts will concentrate on the development of a coordinated strategy to link phenological information from satellites, indicator plants (such as the lilac), and representative species from each biome.  相似文献

At elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations ([CO2]a), photosynthetic capacity (Amax) and root fraction (ηR, the ratio of root to plant dry mass) increased in some studies and decreased in others. Here, we have explored possible causes of this, focusing on the relative magnitudes of the effects of elevated [CO2]a on specific leaf (nm) and plant (np) nitrogen concentrations, leaf mass per unit area (h), and plant nitrogen productivity (α). In our survey of 39 studies with 35 species, we found that elevated [CO2]a led to decreased nm and np in all the studies and to increased h and α in most of the studies. The magnitudes of these changes varied with species and with experimental conditions. Based on a model that integrated [CO2]a-induced changes in leaf nitrogen into a biochemically based model of leaf photosynthesis, we predicted that, to a first approximation, photosynthesis will be upregulated (Amax will increase) when growth at increased [CO2]a leads to increases in h that are larger than decreases in nm. Photosynthesis will be downregulated (Amax will decrease) when increases in h are smaller than decreases in nm. The model suggests that photosynthetic capacity increases at elevated [CO2]a only when additional leaf mesophyll more than compensates the effects of nitrogen dilution. We considered two kinds of regulatory paradigms that could lead to varying responses of ηR to elevated [CO2]a, and compared the predictions of each with the data. A simple static model based on the functional balance concept predicts that ηR should increase when neither np nor h is very responsive to elevated [CO2]a. The quantitative and qualitative agreement of the predictions with data from the literature, however, is poor. A model that predicts ηR from the relative sensitivities of photosynthesis and relative growth rate to elevated [CO2]a corresponds much more closely to the observations. In general, root fraction increases if the response of photosynthesis to [CO2]a is greater than that of relative growth rate.  相似文献

In this study we investigated Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. inflorescence development by characterizing morphological changes at the shoot apex during the transition to flowering. Sixteen-hour photoperiods were used to synchronously induce flowering in vegetative plants grown for 30 d in non-inductive 8-h photoperiods. During the first inductive cycle, the shoot apical meristem ceased producing leaf primordia and began to produce flower primordia. The differentiation of paraclades (axillary flowering shoots), however, did not occur until after the initiation of multiple flower primordia from the shoot apical meristem. Paraclades were produced by the basipetal activation of buds from the axils of leaf primordia which had been initiated prior to photoperiodic induction. Concurrent with the activation of paraclades was the partial suppression of paraclade-associated leaf primordia, which became bract leaves. The suppression of bract-leaf primordia and the abrupt initiation of flower primordia during the first inductive photoperiod is indicative of a single phase change during the transition to flowering in photoperiodically induced Arabidopsis. Morphogenetic changes characteristic of the transition to flowering in plants grown continuously in 16-h photoperiods were qualitatively equivalent to the changes observed in plants which were photoperiodically induced after 30 d. These results suggest that Arabidopsis has only two phases of development, a vegetative phase and a reproductive phase; and that the production of flower primordia, the differentiation of paraclades from the axils of pre-existing leaf primordia and the elongation of internodes all occur during the reproductive phase.  相似文献

Details are presented of the composition of the diet of eastern lowland gorillas, derived mainly from a study of their fresh trails and fecal analysis, during the course of an entire year in the tropical lowland forests of the Itebero region, Zaire. Gorillas ate 194 plant foods from 121 species and 45 families. They consumed 48 species of fruits; and 89% of fecal samples contained fruit seeds, but fruits were a relatively small part (25%) of the total number of food items. The composition of their diet changed seasonally. When consumption of fruit decreased in the long rainy and the long dry seasons, the gorillas ate, in addition to Zingiberaceae and Marantaceae, many kinds of leaf and bark, which may be an important buffer against the shortage of fruits. Gorillas also fed regularly on ants (Ponerinae), and the frequency of consumption showed small seasonal variations. From a comparison of diet composition, eastern lowland gorillas appeared to be intermediate between the other two subspecies. The choice of food showed differences in preference of fruits and insects between subspecies and may reflect high similarities within subspecies in lowland and montane forests.  相似文献

A histological study was undertaken to clarify seasonal changes in the spermatogenic epithelium of Japanese macaques. Testicular tissue samples were excised by biopsies from five adult laboratory-maintained males in mating and non-mating seasons. The samples were fixed with Bouin's solution, embedded in paraffin, and stained with PAS and hematoxylin. Microscopic observations on cross-sections of seminiferous tubules revealed that the seminiferous epithelium in the mating season was thicker than in the non-mating season. PAS-stained granules were found in some of the dark A-type spermatogonia, which significantly increased in the non-mating season. Spermatids of the steps preceding the appearance of the acrosomic cap in stages I to III were observed significantly more often than those in the step coinciding with the formation of the acrosomic cap in stage IV. In stage I, the ratio of mature spermatids or spermatozoa to immature spermatids in the mating season was higher than that in the non-mating season. These findings suggest that spermiogenesis, as well as spermatocytogenesis, is inhibited in the non-mating season.  相似文献

Gas exchange and dry-weight production in Opuntia ficus-indica, a CAM species cultivated worldwide for its fruit and cladodes, were studied in 370 and 750 μmol mol−1 CO2 at three photosynthetic photon flux densities (PPFD: 5, 13 and 20 mol m−2 d−1). Elevated CO2 and PPFD enhanced the growth of basal cladodes and roots during the 12-week study. A rise in the PPFD increased the growth of daughter cladodes; elevated CO2 enhanced the growth of first-daughter cladodes but decreased the growth of the second-daughter cladodes produced on them. CO2 enrichment enhanced daily net CO2 uptake during the initial 8 weeks after planting for both basal and first-daughter cladodes. Water vapour conductance was 9 to 15% lower in 750 than in 370 μmol mol−1 CO2. Cladode chlorophyll content was lower in elevated CO2 and at higher PPFD. Soluble sugar and starch contents increased with time and were higher in elevated CO2 and at higher PPFD. The total plant nitrogen content was lower in elevated CO2. The effect of elevated CO2 on net CO2 uptake disappeared at 12 weeks after planting, possibly due to acclimation or feedback inhibition, which in turn could reflect decreases in the sink strength of roots. Despite this decreased effect on net CO2 uptake, the total plant dry weight at 12 weeks averaged 32% higher in 750 than in 370 μmol mol−1 CO2. Averaged for the two CO2 treatments, the total plant dry weight increased by 66% from low to medium PPFD and by 37% from medium to high PPFD.  相似文献

On the basis of distribution maps showing the first pollen occurrences in the Holocene of the well-known climate indicators Hedera, Ilex and Viscum as well as data for Corylus, a series of maps have been prepared that show summer and winter isotherms at various time intervals during the Holocene. From these maps climate curves for Amsterdam, the Netherlands have been set out. These were compared with curves for the Eemian at the same site. In both of these warm periods there is evidence for increased seasonality in the early phases which were relatively continental. Changes in insolation could account for such differences. Summer optima occurred earlier than winter optima. Changes in land-sea distribution are important, especially with regard to the patterns in winter climate. During the latter half of the Eemian, the climate was distinctly more oceanic than in the Holocene. Early in the Holocene, an influx of warm ocean water resulted in higher winter temperatures in the Gulf of Biscay, the Irish Sea, and areas east of Skagerrak-Kattegat. Temperature decline after the climatic optimum was greatest in the north, i.e. at 60°N, where a depression in the order of 2°C in summer and 2–3°C in winter occurred. Temperature decline was less farther south, i.e. at ca. 50°N, where a distinct west-east gradient in temperature change can be observed.  相似文献

Interaction between a 70-amino acid and zinc-binding polypeptide from the regulatory chain and the catalytic (C) trimer of aspartate transcarbamoylase (ATCase) leads to dramatic changes in enzyme activity and affinity for active site ligands. The hypothesis that the complex between a C trimer and 3 polypeptide fragments (zinc domain) is an analog of R state ATCase has been examined by steady-state kinetics, heavy-atom isotope effects, and isotope trapping experiments. Inhibition by the bisubstrate ligand, N-(phosphonacetyl)-L-aspartate (PALA), or the substrate analog, succinate, at varying concentrations of substrates, aspartate, or carbamoyl phosphate indicated a compulsory ordered kinetic mechanism with carbamoyl phosphate binding prior to aspartate. In contrast, inhibition studies on C trimer were consistent with a preferred order mechanism. Similarly, 13C kinetic isotope effects in carbamoyl phosphate at infinite aspartate indicated a partially random kinetic mechanism for C trimer, whereas results for the complex of C trimer and zinc domain were consistent with a compulsory ordered mechanism of substrate binding. The dependence of isotope effect on aspartate concentration observed for the Zn domain-C trimer complex was similar to that obtained earlier for intact ATCase. Isotope trapping experiments showed that the compulsory ordered mechanism for the complex was attributable to increased "stickiness" of carbamoyl phosphate to the Zn domain-C trimer complex as compared to C trimer alone. The regulatory enzyme aspartate transcarbamoylase (ATCase), comprising 2 catalytic (C) trimers and 3 regulatory (R) dimers, owes its stability to the manifold interchain interactions among the 12 polypeptide chains. With the availability of a recombinant 70-amino acid zinc-containing polypeptide fragment of the regulatory chain of ATCase, it has become possible to analyze directly the interaction between catalytic and regulatory chains in a complex of simpler structure independent of other interactions such as those between the 2 C trimers, which also contribute to the stability of the holoenzyme. Also, the effect of the interaction between the polypeptide, termed the zinc domain, and the C trimer on the thermal stability and other properties can be measured directly. Differential scanning microcalorimetry experiments demonstrated that the binding of the zinc domain to the C trimer leads to a complex of markedly increased thermal stability. This was shown with a series of mutant forms of the C trimer, which themselves varied greatly in their temperature of denaturation due to single amino acid replacements. With some C trimers, for which tm varied over a range of 30 degrees C due to diverse amino acid substitutions, the elevation of tm resulting from the interaction with the zinc domain was as large as 18 degrees C. The values of tm for a variety of complexes of mutant C trimers and the wild-type zinc domain were similar to those observed when the holoenzymes containing the mutant C trimers were subjected to heat denaturation.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
