The intracellular concentration of cyclic adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate is constant throughout the cell cycle of Escherichia coli

Abstract Both the intracellular and the extracellular concentration of cyclic AMP increases logarithmically in synchronously growing cultures of Escherichia coli . Thus, cyclic AMP by itself cannot regulate growth and division of the bacterium during the cell cycle.     

Nuttallia balearicae sp. n., an Avian Piroplasm from Crowned Cranes (Balearica spp.)

An avian piroplasm, Nuttallia balearicae sp. n., is described from captive Balearica p. pavonina and B. p. gibbericeps. Other avian piroplasms and their validity and taxonomic status are discussed. The possible route of transmission of these parasites is also considered.     

Rare earth thiocyanate complexes with tripiperidinophosphine oxide: synthesis and characterization. Crystal structure of Pr(SCN)3(tpppO)3

The synthesis and characterization of rare-earth (La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu and Y) thiocyanate adducts with tripiperidinophosphine oxide (tpppO) with general formula (RE)(SCN)₃(tpppO)₃ are reported. Conductance measurements in acetonitrile indicate the non-electrolytic nature of the complexes. Infrared absorption spectra evidence that the SCN⁻ ion coordinates through the nitrogen atom (isothiocyanate form) and that tpppO coordinates through the phosphoryl oxygen. X-ray powder patterns suggest the existence of three different crystal forms: (1) La; (2) an isomorphous series including Ce, Nd and Pr; and (3) another isomorphous series, including Sm, Gd, Eu, Ho, Er, Tb, Lu and Y. The visible spectra of the Nd adduct and the calculated parameters β = 0.98, b^1/2 = 0.072 and δ = 1.06 indicate that the metal-ligand bonds are essentially electrostactic. The emission spectra of the Eu compound showed ⁵D₀ → ⁷F_J bands (J = 0, 1, 2), suggesting a C_3v symmetry for the coordination polyhedron. The lifetime of the ⁵D₀ state is 1.28 ms. The emission spectra of the Tb complex presented ⁵D₄ → ⁷F_J bands (J = 4, 5, 6) and the Dy complex showed the ⁴F_9/2 → ⁶H_13/2 band. The structure of the Pr complex showed that the coordination polyhedron is a trigonal antiprism, with the isothiocyanate anions in one base and three tpppO ligands in the other. Thermal analyses (TG-DTG) were carried out for the Ce, Nd and Gd adducts. Mass losses start between 250 and 334 °C. The final residues at 1300 °C are the corresponding phosphates.     

Influence of latitude, water depth, day v. night and wet v. dry periods on the species composition of reef fish communities in tropical Western Australia

Trap sampling over reefs in deep (mean = 20 m) and shallow (mean = 10 m) waters along c. 1500 km of coastline in tropical north‐western Australia during both day and night and in wet and dry periods yielded 23 377 fishes, representing 32 families, 58 genera and 119 species. Individuals of the Serranidae, Lutjanidae, Lethrinidae and Carangidae contributed 88·9% to the total catch. The ichthyofaunal compositions of the Kimberley, Canning and Pilbara bioregions were relatively discrete. Species composition was influenced far more by location (latitude) than by water depth, period and time of day, and underwent a gradational change southwards. The latter change reflected differences in the trends exhibited by the relative abundances of certain species with increasing latitude and the confinement of other species largely to particular regions. The three most abundant species, i.e. Lethrinus sp. 3, Lutjanus carponotatus and Lethrinus laticaudis contributed 34·8, 20·8 and 11·6% to the total catch, respectively. The first species was rarely recorded in the two most northern locations and was abundant in the four most southern locations, whereas the last two species were relatively more abundant in northern than in southern locations. Lutjanus bitaeniatus and Lutjanus johnii were found exclusively at the two locations in the Kimberley region, whereas Abalistes stellatus, Pentapodus emeryii and Lethrinus nebulosus were not caught in this region but were found in both locations of the Canning and Pilbara regions. The species composition in deep and shallow waters at each location almost invariably differed significantly between day and night and between dry and wet periods, with species such as L. bitaeniatus, L. johnii, Lutjanus sebae and A. stellatus being more abundant over deep reefs, whereas L. carponotatus, L. laticaudis, Siganus fuscescens and Lethrinus lentjan were more numerous over shallow reefs. Species such as L. johnii and Lethrinus atkinsoni were relatively more important in night‐time than daytime catches, whereas the reverse applied to Lethrinus lentjan, L. laticaudis and Choerodon cyanodus. Lethrinus sp. 3 and L. laticaudis were relatively more important in catches during the dry than wet period.     

An Ecteola-cellulose chromatography assay for 3′-phosphoadenosine 5′-phosphosulfate: Phenol sulfotransferase

A new assay procedure for phenol sulfotransferase which employs [35S]-3'-phosphoadenosine-5'-phosphosulfate as a sulfate donor and a variety of phenols as sulfate acceptors was developed. The appearance of the 35S-sulfated products or the disappearance of the [35S]-3'-phosphoadenosine-5'-phosphosulfate are determined simultaneously by chromatography of the assay incubation mixtures on Ecteola-cellulose columns, eluting with an NH4HCO3 step gradient. Various acidic, neutral, and basic phenols can be employed as substrates for phenol sulfotransferase using this procedure.     

DDT induced ethological changes in estuarine fish

Synopsis Experiments were carried out to study the feeding rates of the predator fish Therapon jarbua (Forsk) on mullet juveniles, before and after treatment with DDT. Mullet juveniles treated with a subacute concentration, were refused by the control predators, whereas predators treated with a subacute concentration consumed more mullet juveniles. In the present study crescent perch T. jarbua were exposed to subacute and acute concentrations of DDT, and their behaviour was compared with that of the control predators. There were changes in oriented behaviour and co-ordinated movements, and in feeding, aggression and comfort behaviour of the fish. Inflammation in the gills, and caudal fin serration, were noticed in treated fishes. The findings presented here throw light on fundamental pathways by which pollutants interact with the behaviour of fishes.     

Hormones and liver mitochondria: Influence of growth hormone,thyroxine, testosterone,and insulin on thermotropic effects of respiration and fatty acid composition of membranes

The effects of hypophysectomy and subsequent administration of growth hormone, thyroxine, insulin, and testosterone were examined in rat liver for the relationship between the thermotropic effects on State 3 respiration (ADP induced) and fatty acid composition of the phospholipid fraction of intact mitochondria as well as of inner membrane vesicles. The Arrhenius profile for energy-linked (succinate) State 3 respiration of mitochondria from hypophysectomized rats lacked the discontinuity at 23.5 °C seen with mitochondria from normal rats. After injections of the hormones the discontinuity representing the transition temperature from gel to liquid crystalline state of lipids occurred at different temperatures: 18.5 °C for growth hormone, 26.0 °C for thyroxine, 19.5 °C for growth hormone + thyroxine, 27.6 °C for insulin, and 25.3 °C for testosterone. The energy of activation between 37.5 and 23.5 °C was 1.9 times greater for hypophysectomy than for controls. Growth hormone was the most effective in restoring the energy of activation to normal, above as well as below transition temperature. The effect of thyroxine appears to be due to a larger stimulation of the State 4 respiration than that of growth hormone, insulin, or testosterone, especially at higher temperatures. Phospholipids extracted from intact mitochondria or inner membrane vesicles of hypophysectomized rats contained less arachidonic acid (20:4) and more linoleic acid (18:2) than those of normal rats. In addition, the contents of some of the minor fatty acids were also changed. Calculated unsaturation index showed an 18.8 and 14.9% depletion in unsaturation in whole mitochondria and inner membranes, respectively. Among the different hormones used to treat the hypophysectomized rats, growth hormone was the most effective in restoring the transition temperature and fatty acid composition to normal levels and increasing the gain in body weight. Although the other hormones increased total unsaturation index to some extent, some of the individual fatty acids were affected differently. Good correlation exists between the unsaturation index of mitochondrial fatty acids and transition temperature of State 3 respiration. These results strongly suggest a role for the hormones, particularly growth hormone, in the control of mitochondrial membrane fluidity of hypophysectomized rat liver, through fatty acid composition of phospholipids.
