Challenges in the application of geometric constraint models 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2

Discerning the processes influencing geographical patterns of species richness remains one of the central goals of modern ecology. Traditional approaches to exploring these patterns have focused on environmental and ecological correlates of observed species richness. Recently, some have suggested these approaches suffer from the lack of an appropriate null model that accounts for species ranges being constrained to occur within a bounded domain. Proponents of these null geometric constraint models (GCMs), and the mid-domain effect these models produce, argue their utility in identifying meaningful gradients in species richness. This idea has generated substantial debate. Here we discuss what we believe are the three major challenges in the application of GCMs. First, we argue that there are actually two equally valid null models for the random placement of species ranges within a domain, one of which actually predicts a uniform distribution of species richness. Second, we highlight the numerous decisions that must be made to implement a GCM that lead to marked differences in the predictions of the null model. Finally, we discuss challenges in evaluating the importance of GCMs once they have been implemented. 相似文献

Abstract: Geometric morphometric analysis using relative warps is applied to the skull roof of 62 species of stereospondyls and their closest outgroups (i.e. basal archegosauriforms) from among temnospondyl amphibians. Twenty-one landmarks and five taxonomic groups are used for comparisons. Their skull evolution is quantified in a morphospace defined by two relative warps axes. The majority of groups show poor concordance between morphological and phylogenetic distances. The only exception is represented by Yates and Warren's study of stereospondyl relationships, in which concordance is high. Only basal archegosauriforms and rhinesuchids show significant overlap in morphospace, although this might be due to low sample sizes. Regression of estimated mean disparity against taxon sample size shows that species within both the trematosauroid and the rhytidostean groups are more widely dispersed in morphospace than species belonging to any of the remaining stereospondyl groups. Stereospondyl skull evolution was characterized by divergence between major clades and convergence within those clades. Changes in patterns of morphospace occupation through time agree with the hypothesis of an 'explosive' radiation in the early Early Triassic, after the extinction of basal archegosauriforms at the end of the Permian. 相似文献

Recent years have seen the development of molecular‐based methodologies to investigate hybridization and its impact on the evolutionary process. However, morphological characterization of hybrid zones has only scantily been considered, especially in zootaxa. Thus, the level of congruence between molecular and morphological characters when attempting to detect hybrids remains a poorly tackled area. The genets (genus Genetta) provide an ideal case study for further investigation of the respective contribution of morphology and DNA in hybrid zone characterization because (1) their morphology has recently been exhaustively explored and (2) the existence of hybrid zones in southern Africa was proposed in the literature. We assessed levels of hybridization among the southern African genets, and questioned the role of ecological factors on the hybridization patterns detected. We used an integrative approach involving nine discrete morphological characters and a diagnostic discriminant function, geometric morphometrics and sequences of cytochrome b including collection specimens. The combination of independent materials allowed us to accurately reassess the level of hybridization in southern African genets, and revealed cryptic, interspecific gene flows. Morphology unambiguously detected a low number of G. maculata × G. tigrina hybrids and rejected the hypothesis of a large intergradation zone in KwaZulu‐Natal, thus supporting the species status of the two genets. Cytochrome b analyses revealed: (1) cryptic, massive hybridization between G. tigrina and the sympatric G. felina, and (2) a trace of reticulation (one sequence) between G. tigrina and the allopatric G. genetta. The type specimen of G. mossambica Matschie, 1902 is considered to be a morphological hybrid between G. maculata and G. angolensis. Remarkably, the morphological approaches (discrete characters and morphometrics) proved complementary to conclusions derived from cytochrome b sequences. Whilst morphometrics was generally unable to accurately identify all putative hybrids, this approach revealed diagnostic cranial shape differences between recognized species as well as the cryptic G. ‘letabae’ (included in the super‐species G. maculata). Morphometrics also confirmed the diagnostic value and age dependency of discrete characters. Our integrative approach appeared necessary to the detection of cryptic hybridizations and to the comprehensive characterization of hybrid zones. The recurrent detection of hybrids exhibiting tigrina‐like coat patterns may suggest (1) asymmetric hybridization of G. tigrina males to females of other species and (2) positive selection for tigrina‐like phenotype in South African habitats, but these hypotheses will have to be further tested using other sources of evidence. Despite the precise mosaic of hybrid zones identified in southern African genets, the environmental factors that shape patterns of distribution of hybrids remain unclear. Nevertheless, in the light of our range reassessment, it appears that seasonality of precipitation and periods of annual frost may play stringent roles in the distribution of genets. The complementarity of our results based on morphology and molecules is regarded as encouraging for the further development of integrative approaches in order to better understand the complex phenomena that underlie hybridization processes. © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2005, 86 , 11–33. 相似文献

A geometric morphometric approach to the study of ecogeographical and clinal variation in vervet monkeys 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Aim To examine and visualize clines in size and shape of Cercopithecus aethiops Linneus, 1758 (Primate, Cercopithecidae) skulls, and to investigate environmental factors which might best explain the observed variation. Location Sub‐Saharan Africa. Methods Eighty‐six three‐dimensional anatomical landmarks were used to describe 306 skulls of adult C. aethiops sampled over its entire distribution. Geometric morphometric methods for the quantitative analysis of form variation were applied. Size and shape variables were computed and regressed onto geographical coordinates and environmental variables (elevation, temperature, rainfall, moisture and Shannon rainfall diversity index) using both linear and curvilinear models. Components (geographical, environmental, spatially structured environmental and residual) of ecogeographical variation in skull form were partitioned using partial regression. A novel approach for summarizing and visualizing nonlinear patterns of clinal variation using surface rendering of three‐dimensional shapes is presented. Results Clinal variation in size and shape was highly significant, and was best described by curvilinear models. There were strong similarities between females and males. The cline in size was especially pronounced, explaining up to about 40% of observed variation, and was mainly longitudinal rather than latitudinal. A major trend of clinal shape variation also occurred from west to east, and corresponded to an expansion of the face relative to the neurocranium in the west. In the east, skulls also tended to be deeper and with narrower zygomatic arches. Geography and the spatially structured environmental component were the major contributors to the explained variance in size in both sexes, but the proportion of variance explained by the latter was smaller in females. In contrast, geography and environment explained similar amounts of variation in shape and their contribution was about twice that of the spatially structured environmental component. About 60–80% of variation in skull form was not explained by any variable in the analysis. The main factors influencing skull size differed in females and males, with rainfall being very influential in males. Both female and male skull shapes were strongly affected by average annual rainfall. Main conclusions A strong spatial and environmental basis to variations in African vervet monkey skull form was evident. However, the observed pattern did not conform to predictions based on Bergmann's rule. Rainfall consistently emerged as an important predictor, which may contribute to intraspecific variation in the size and shape of vervet monkey skulls through its effect on habitat productivity. 相似文献

Genetic and phenotypic variation in central and northern European populations of Aedes (Aedimorphus) vexans (Meigen, 1830) (Diptera,Culicidae) 下载免费PDF全文

The floodwater mosquito Aedes vexans can be a massive nuisance in the flood plain areas of mainland Europe, and is the vector of Tahyna virus and a potential vector of Dirofilaria immitis. This epidemiologically important species forms three subspecies worldwide, of which Aedes vexans arabiensis has a wide distribution in Europe and Africa. We quantified the genetic and phenotypic variation in Ae. vexans arabiensis in populations from Sweden (northern Europe), Hungary, and Serbia (central Europe). A landscape genetics approach (FST, STRUCTURE, BAPS, GENELAND) revealed significant differentiation between northern and southern populations. Similar to genetic data, wing geometric morphometrics revealed two different clusters, one made by Swedish populations, while another included Hungarian and Serbian populations. Moreover, integrated genetic and morphometric data from the spatial analysis suggested groupings of populations into three clusters, one of which was from Swedish and Hungarian populations. Data on spatial analysis regarding an intermediate status of the Hungarian population was supported by observed Isolation‐by‐Distance patterns. Furthermore, a low proportion of interpopulation vs intrapopulation variance revealed by AMOVA and low‐to‐moderate FST values on a broader geographical scale indicate a continuous between‐population exchange of individuals, including considerable gene flow on the regional scale, are likely to be responsible for the maintenance of the observed population similarity in Aе. vexans. We discussed data considering population structure in the light of vector control strategies of the mosquito from public health importance. 相似文献

Combining geometric morphometrics with molecular genetics to investigate a putative hybrid complex: a case study with barbels Barbus spp. (Teleostei: Cyprinidae) 下载免费PDF全文
This integrative study examined the morphological and genetic affinities of three endemic barbel species from Italy (brook barbel Barbus caninus, Italian barbel Barbus plebejus and horse barbel Barbus tyberinus) and of putative hybrid specimens to their species of origin. Two of the species frequently occur together with the non‐native barbel Barbus barbus. DNA barcoding indicates that mitochondrial (mt) haplotypes often do not match the species expected from morphology. Linear distance measurements and meristics are not informative for discrimination of the species and putative hybrids, but a discriminant analysis of principal components (DAPC) of geometric landmark data produces reassignments largely in congruence with mt and nuclear genetic data. Cyto‐nuclear conflicts confirm the presence of hybridization in B. plebejus and B. tyberinus and identify additional introgressed specimens. A comparison between mixed genotypes and their morphology‐based assignment reveals no predictable pattern. The finding that most individuals of the morphologically similar B. plebejus and B. tyberinus have very high assignment probabilities to their respective species suggests that the presented approach may serve as a valuable tool to distinguish morphologically very similar taxa. 相似文献

Wing morphology of the active flyer Calliphora vicina (Diptera: Calliphoridae) during its invasion of a sub‐Antarctic archipelago where insect flightlessness is the rule 下载免费PDF全文

The cosmopolitan blowfly Calliphora vicina became established in the sub‐Antarctic Kerguelen Islands in the late 1970s, following a warming period that allowed its full development. Although temperature and wind may limit flight activity, the fly invaded the archipelago, reaching sites remote from the introduction point. Most native competitors have converged to flightlessness as a response to stringent environmental conditions and therefore the flight strategy of C. vicina might be either a handicap or a competitive advantage under ongoing climate change. Using geometric morphometrics, we investigated whether the wing had changed over time in C. vicina within the archipelago (1998 vs. 2009) and compared its morphology with that of a continental population from a temperate area (1983 vs. 2009). Wing shape plasticity to temperature was also experimentally investigated. We found no clues of relaxed selection on flight morphology in the range invaded. However, rapid changes of wing shape occurred over time in females from the Kerguelen Islands compared with both males and females of the continental population, despite a shorter time‐lag between samples in the former. The thermal reaction norms for wing shape found for C. vicina from Kerguelen were also different from those of the continental population, but it remains unknown whether this resulted from or preceded the introduction. These combined findings are consistent with a fingerprint of local adaptation in the invasive population. However, the adaptive significance of the changes, in terms of their aerodynamic consequences and the future evolution of C. vicina in the Kerguelen Islands, requires further investigation. From an evolutionary standpoint, sustaining flight capability under the novel sub‐Antarctic conditions might be critical to the invasive success of C. vicina as most competitors are flightless. 相似文献
