ABSTRACT. Geographic variation and genetic aspect of reproductive diapause were studied in Drosophila triauraria Bock & Wheeler and D. quadraria Bock & Wheeler, in relation to their quantitative response to photoperiods. D. quadraria from the subtropical region had no photoperiodic diapause. In D. triauraria strains, diapause was induced under LD 10:14 or 12:12, but not under LD 14:10 or longer photoperiods. Their diapause was induced more effectively and maintained longer by LD 10:14 than by LD 12:12. The duration of diapause was longer in a northern strain, but the diapause inducing process varied little among different geographical strains. Diapause incidence was 50% or lower in F1 hybrids between D. triauraria and D. quadraria and backcross progenies between F1 and D. quadraria , and about 70% in backcross progenies between F1 and D. triauraria under LD 10:14, but very low under LD 12:12. The lower incidence of diapause in these F; and backcross progenies is assumed to be due to the less efficient induction of diapause, since once diapause was induced in them, it was maintained for a long time, especially in the backcross progenies between F1 and D. triauraria. Summary The amino acid sequences of 15 sugar permeases of the bacterial phosphoenolpyruvatedependent phosphotransferase system (PTS) were divided into four homologous segments, and these segments were analyzed to give phylogenetic trees. The permease segments fell into four clusters: the lactose-cellobiose cluster, the fructose-mannitol cluster, the glucose-N-acetylglucosamine cluster, and the sucrose--glucoside cluster. Sequences of the glucitol and mannose permeases (clusters 5 and 6, respectively) were too dissimilar to establish homology with the other permeases, but short regions of statistically significant sequence similarities were noted. The functional and structural relationships of these permease segments are discussed.Some of the homologous PTS permeases were found to exhibit sufficient sequence similarity to subunits 4 and 5 of the eukaryotic mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase complex to suggest homology. Moreover, subunits 4 and 5 of this complex appeared to be homologous to each other, suggesting that these PTS and mitochondrial proteins comprise a superfamily. The integral membrane subunits of the evolutionarily divergent mannose PTS permease, the P and M subunits, exhibited limited sequence similarity to subunit 6 of the mitochondrial F1F0-ATPase and subunit 5b of cytochrome oxidase, respectively. These results suggest that PTS sugar permeases and mitochondrial proton-translocating proteins may be related, although the possibility of convergent evolution cannot be ruled out. 相似文献

Populations of the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch collected from various localities and from various host plants in Japan showed wide variations in diapause attribute. Diapause percentages at 18°C/9L15D varied from nearly 100% in the north to 0% in the south-west. At intermediate latitudes the mites showed wide inter-population variations. Populations on herbaceous hosts in vinyl- or glass-houses gave significantly lower incidence of diapause than those on roses and deciduous fruit trees. Presence of winter hosts and better host quality under protected environments seemed to favour non-diapausing mites. The temperature threshold for diapause expression also varied widely among local populations. Northern populations consistently had higher and less variable thresholds than populations at intermediate latitudes with thresholds between 15 and 18°C. Inbred lines derived from a population in Kyoto exhibited a wide variation in diapause percentage at 18°C. These results show that diapause in T. urticae is a quantitative threshold trait and that populations in central Japan consist of a variety of genotypes with different diapause traits. This might provide a genetic source for adaptation to local and temporal variations in environmental conditions. 相似文献

The ultrastructure of chloroplasts from 28 of the 73 species of Caulerpa Lamouroux (Chlorophyta, Caulerpales) has been studied to aid in interpreting phylogenetic relationships among the 12 recognized sections. Variations of systematic value include pyrenoid occurrence and fine structure, thylakoid architecture and amount of photosynthate storage. Comparisons of field and culture specimens indicate these characters are consistent. Chloroplast thylakoids are grouped into bands, with the distribution of bands differing among species. In the most common arrangement, bands are evenly distributed throughout the chloroplast. A few species show lateral displacement of bands whereas others have a majority of bands arranged at one end of the chloroplast. Starch is stored cither as one or two large grains (> 1 μm diam.) or numerous small grains (< 0.5 μm diam.). Electron-transparent regions are common in other species in which chloroplasts rarely store starch. Simple, embedded pyrenoids are present in several species of section Sedoideae. An opaque region occurs in chloroplasts of C. elongata which may represent an intermediate stage in the evolutionary loss of the pyrenoid. It is suggested that the chloroplast of Caulerpa evolved, from a large, complex, pyrenoid-containing organelle housing both photosynthetic and amylogenic functions, to a small, structurally simpler one, specialized for photosynthesis alone. A phylogeny of the 12 sections of Caulerpa is constructed, based on chloroplast evolution which agrees with an earlier morphology-based hypothesis on the origin and evolution of Caulerpa. 相似文献

The isolated population of grass snakes, Natrix natrix (L.), on the island of Gotland in die Baltic Sea is described and illustrated. Comparisons are made with the surrounding mainland grass snake. On the basis of morphological and ecological divergence, the conclusion is drawn that the Gotland population represents a new subspecies. 相似文献
