Summary Target cells for testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, and estradiol in the pituitary gland and genital tract of the male primate were localized by thaw-mount autoradiography, and high performance liquid chromatography was used to identify the metabolites of these steroids in cell nuclei. Castrated rhesus monkeys were injected with 3H-testosterone, 3H-dihydrotestosterone, or 3H-estradiol and killed 60 min later. In the anterior pituitary gland, fewer cells were labeled and less radioactivity was taken up by cell nuclei following the administration of either 3H-testosterone (4% of pars distalis cells and 5 dpm/g DNA) or 3H-dihydrotestosterone (5% of cells and 13 dpm/g DNA) than following the administration of 3H-estradiol (43% of cells and 214 dpm/g DNA). Most of the radioactivity in nuclei was in the form of the unmetabolized parent compound (78–94%). In prostate, seminal vesicles, and penis, 3H-dihydrotestosterone was the predominant form of nuclear radioactivity following both 3H-testosterone (67–90%) and 3H-dihydrostestosterone (94–97%) administration, and both androgens labeled epithelial and smooth muscle cells. In contrast, 3H-estradiol was taken up in unchanged form, by cell nuclei of the genital tract and it labeled connective tissue fibroblasts, but not epithelial cells. Thus, the distributions of target cells for androgens and estrogens were clearly different in all these tissues, and the uptake of testosterone resembled that of its androgenic rather than that of its estrogenic metabolite.  相似文献

Odor communication in Old World monkeys and apes is controversial, because most females have evolved visual and behavioral cues to signal fertility, e.g., sexual swellings. Female stump-tailed macaques (Macaca arctoides) do not have swellings, and mediation of chemical communication likely occurs because males engage in sexual behavior mostly throughout the periovulatory phase of the menstrual cycle. We tested whether vaginal secretions from different cycle phases, with saline solution as a control, promote changes in the frequency of male genital exploration, copulation, and coercive behavior toward females different from the donors, while female donors were apart from the group. Males explored more female genitals when exposed to follicular, periovulatory, and early luteal secretions in comparison to saline or menstrual or late luteal secretions. The increase in coercive behavior after exposure to follicular and periovulatory secretions most likely was a male response to the lack of cooperation of target females in engaging in copulation, as the latter were not receptive during the tests. The strength of male response to vaginal secretions varied significantly as a result of individual variability between donor females, yet the variability does not correlate either to dominance rank or to female age. Exploratory behavior of males correlates significantly with their social rank. Our results suggest that vaginal secretions are among the cues that male Macaca arctoides use to acknowledge the reproductive status of females in the absence of visual signals.  相似文献

The genus Rhagada is the second most diverse camaenid genus in Australia. We examined anatomical and mitochondrial characters of previously unidentified material from the Kimberley that was earmarked to potentially represent new species in recently published molecular phylogenetic studies. Our comparisons revealed that specimens from Gibbings Island (‘R. sp. Gibbings’) were morphologically and genetically most similar to Rhagada cygna from the Dampier Peninsula. Hence, ‘R. sp. Gibbings’ is considered to be identical to R. cygna. In addition, we found that R. cygna as so delimited is not clearly distinguished from the second species on the Dampier Peninsula, Rhagada bulgana. Both species differ rather subtly in anatomical and mitochondrial characters, indicating their close relationships and potentially incomplete evolutionary differentiation. Furthermore, we describe two new species based on comparative morphology and mitochondrial sequences: Rhagada worora n. sp. from the Prince Regent Reserve in the Kimberley and Rhagada karajarri n. sp. from Dampierland. The present study confirms that species in Rhagada are best identified by means of both morphological and molecular data.

The form of amniote claws has been extensively investigated, often with inferences about ecological association being drawn from studies of their geometry. Various methods have been used to quantify differences in the geometry of claws, but rarely have the underlying assumptions of such methods been addressed. Here, we use one set of bird claws and apply six methods (five that have been previously used, and a new one) that are tasked with comparing their shape. In doing so, we compare the (1) ability of these methods to represent the shape of the claw; (2) validity of the assumptions made about underlying claw geometry; (3) their ability to be applied unambiguously; and (4) their ability to differentiate between predetermined functional clusters. We find that of the six methods considered only the geometric morphometric approach reveals differences in the shapes of bird claws. Our comparison shows that geometry‐based methods can provide a general estimate of the degree of curvature of claw arcs, but are unable to differentiate between shapes. Of all of the geometry‐based approaches, we conclude that the adjusted version of the Zani (2000) method is the most useful because it can be applied without ambiguity, and provides a reliable estimate of claw curvature. The three landmarks that define that method (tip and base of the claw arc, plus the intersection between said claw arc and a line drawn perpendicular from the midpoint of tip and claw base) do not all bear biological significance, but relatively clearly circumscribe the length‐to‐height ratio of the claw, which relates to its curvature. Overall, our comparisons reveal that the shape of avian claws does not differ significantly between climbing and perching birds, and that the utilization of preordained functional clusters in comparative data analysis can hinder the discovery of meaningful differences in claw shape. The present study investigated the morphological and genetic differentiation pattern between two sympatric dung beetle sister species, Onthophagus taurus and Onthophagus illyricus . The geometric morphometric approach coupled with the use of molecular markers allowed examination of the nature of interspecific relationships and an outline of the evolutionary and geographical processes that might have led to interspecific differentiation and the present-day partial sympatric and syntopic pattern of distribution. Geometric morphometrics failed to discrimininate the two species on the ground of external morphological traits, but revealed interspecific differences when the shape of the primary sexual traits was taken into account. The use of two different molecular markers (cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene and amplified fragment-length polymorphism) demonstrates that the two species are genetically well differentiated, forming two distinguishable lineages probably diverged during the Pliocene by allopatric speciation. No evidence of past or recent introgression and no support for hybridization were found, suggesting that sympatry was established subsequently, when speciation was accomplished. Both molecular markers and genital shape indicate that phenotypically intermediate individuals, despite their ambiguous appearance, are members of O. illyricus species rather than hybrids.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 89 , 197–211.  相似文献

Geographic variation in morphological traits is widespread and important to our current understanding of evolutionary processes. Although male genitalia are perhaps the most divergent morphological traits in animals, geographic variation in genital traits has received little attention and the mechanism driving such variation is unclear. The species isolation hypothesis of genital evolution makes explicit predictions about geographic variation in genitalia predicting patterns of genital divergence that reflect the risk of mating with related but incompatible species. The sexual selection and pleiotropy hypotheses, however, predict general levels of geographic variation that reflect divergent sexual selection pressures or genetic drift. To test these predictions, we investigated geographic variation in genital morphology in the praying mantid genus Ciulfina (Mantodea: Liturgusidae) using elliptic Fourier analysis. We found significant levels of geographic variation in the genital morphology of four Ciulfina species irrespective of the relative proximity of different populations to contact zones with other species. These results reject the species isolation hypothesis, and instead support either the sexual selection or pleiotropy hypotheses to explain patterns of genital evolution in this genus.  相似文献

Comparisons of 3D shapes have recently been applied to diverse anatomical structures using landmarking techniques. However, discerning evolutionary patterns can be challenging for structures lacking homologous landmarks. We used alpha shape analyses to quantify vaginal shape complexity in 40 marine mammal specimens including cetaceans, pinnipeds, and sirenians. We explored phylogenetic signal and the potential roles of natural and sexual selection on vaginal shape evolution. Complexity scores were consistent with qualitative observations. Cetaceans had a broad range of alpha complexities, while pinnipeds were comparatively simple and sirenians were complex. Intraspecific variation was found. Three‐dimensional surface heat maps revealed that shape complexity was driven by invaginations and protrusions of the vaginal wall. Phylogenetic signal was weak and metrics of natural selection (relative neonate size) and sexual selection (relative testes size, sexual size dimorphism, and penis morphology) did not explain vaginal complexity patterns. Additional metrics, such as penile shape complexity, may yield interesting insights into marine mammal genital coevolution. We advocate for the use of alpha shapes to discern patterns of evolution that would otherwise not be possible in 3D anatomical structures lacking homologous landmarks.  相似文献

Male and female genital morphology varies widely across many taxa, and even among populations. Disentangling potential sources of selection on genital morphology is problematic because each sex is predicted to respond to adaptations in the other due to reproductive conflicts of interest. To test how variation in this sexual conflict trait relates to variation in genital morphology we used our previously developed artificial selection lines for high and low repeated mating rates. We selected for high and low repeated mating rates using monogamous pairings to eliminate contemporaneous female choice and male–male competition. Male and female genital shape responded rapidly to selection on repeated mating rate. High and low mating rate lines diverged from control lines after only 10 generations of selection. We also detected significant patterns of male and female genital shape coevolution among selection regimes. We argue that because our selection lines differ in sexual conflict, these results support the hypothesis that sexually antagonistic coevolution can drive the rapid divergence of genital morphology. The greatest divergence in morphology corresponded with lines in which the resolution of sexual conflict over mating rate was biased in favor of male interests.  相似文献

Genital traits are among the fastest to evolve, and the processes that drive their evolution are intensively studied. Spiders are characterized by complex genitalia, but the functional role of the different structures during genital coupling is largely unknown. Members of one of the largest spider groups, the retrolateral tibial apophysis (RTA) clade, are characterized by a RTA on the male palp, which is thought to play a crucial role during genital coupling. However, the RTA was lost in several families including the species-rich wolf spiders (Lycosidae) leading to the hypothesis that the genital coupling is achieved by alternative mechanisms. Here, we investigate the genital interactions during copulation in the wolf spider Agalenocosa pirity (Zoicinae) on cryofixed mating pairs using electron, optical and X-ray microscopy and compare our findings with other lycosids and entelegyne spiders. We found an unprecedented coupling mechanism for lycosid spiders involving the palea and a membranous cuticle folding adjacent to the epigynal plate. Additionally, we show an uncommon coupling between the median apophysis and the contralateral genital opening, and confirmed that the terminal apophysis acts as functional conductor, as previously hypothesized for males of Zoicinae. Phylogenetic mapping of RTA indicated that the basal tibial process found in Agalenocosa is a secondary acquisition rather than a modified RTA.  相似文献
