Enhancements to memory are associated with enhanced neural structures that support those capabilities. A great deal of work has examined this relationship in the context of natural variation in spatial memory capability and hippocampal (Hp) structure. Most studies have focused on volumetric and neuron measures, but have seldom examined the role of glial cells. Once considered involved only in supportive functions associated with neurons, the importance of glial cells in cognitive processes, including memory, is gaining more attention. Building upon our previous study on the relationship between the brain, memory, and environmental severity in food‐caching birds, we compared the total number of Hp glial cells in wild‐sampled and in lab‐reared (common garden) black‐capped chickadees (Poecile atricapillus) originating from two different environmental extremes. We found that birds from more harsh climate tended to have significantly more Hp glial cells than those from more mild climate and that lab‐reared chickadees had significantly fewer Hp glial cells compared to the wild‐sampled birds. These results suggest that population differences in glial numbers may be controlled, at least in part, by heritable mechanisms, but glial numbers appear to be additionally regulated by an individual's environment. The pattern of Hp glial cell abundance among our treatment groups closely followed that of the Hp volume, suggesting that Hp glial cell number may be associated with the Hp volume. Unlike Hp neurons, however, the number of Hp glial cells may be, at least in part, affected by an individual's experiences and environment. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 1. For solitary bees that specialise on select pollen types (oligoleges), larval development depends on the availability of forage pollen from appropriate host plants and the naturally occurring microbiota present therein. While access to host pollen may be critical for the development of oligolectic bees, the extent to which pollen microbiota contribute to their brood success is unknown. 2. To investigate, we used a diet manipulation experiment to rear larvae of the oligolege, Osmia ribifloris, under in-vitro conditions. Larvae were reared either on host pollen provisioned by their mother or on non-host pollen collected by honey bees, in the presence or absence of the respective pollen-associated microbiota. We assessed impacts on components of larval fitness: developmental time, biomass, and survivorship. 3. Our results revealed a significant interaction between pollen type and pollen-associated microbes. The relative effect of microbes on larval performance was substantially greater than that of pollen type. Host pollen substrate produced the fittest larvae but only when combined with its full complement of naturally occurring microbiota. In contrast, host pollen without microbes resulted in a marked decline in fitness components. Larvae consuming non-host pollen showed intermediate fitness, regardless of whether microbes were present or not. 4. These findings imply that the microbiota associated with maternally provisioned host pollen perform critical functions in larval nutrition and survival. For oligoleges in particular, the ability to develop on poorer quality host pollen likely derives from this sustained symbiosis with their microbial exosymbionts, rather than the biochemical characteristics of pollen type alone.  相似文献

Bipolar disorder (BD) has a multifactorial etiology with heterogeneous clinical presentations. Around 25% of BD patients may present with a depressive seasonal pattern (SP). However, there are limited scientific data on the prevalence of SP, its clinical manifestations, and any gender influence. Four hundred and fifty-two BD I and II cases (62% female), recruited from three French university-affiliated psychiatric departments, were assessed for SP. Clinical, treatment, and sociodemographic variables were obtained from structured interviews. One hundred and two (23%) cases met DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition) criteria for SP, with similar frequency according to gender. Multivariate analysis showed a significant association between SP and BD II (odds ratio [OR]?=?1.99, p?=?0.01), lifetime history of rapid cycling (OR?=?2.05, p?=?0.02), eating disorders (OR?=?2.94, p?=?0.003), and total number of depressive episodes (OR?=?1.13, p?=?0.002). Seventy-one percent of cases were correctly classified by this analysis. However, when stratifying the analyses by gender, SP was associated with BD II subtype (OR?=?2.89, p?=?0.017) and total number of depressive episodes (OR?=?1.21, p?=?0.0018) in males but with rapid cycling (OR?=?3.02, p?=?0.0027) and eating disorders (OR?=?2.60, p?=?0.016) in females. This is the first study to identify different associations between SP and clinical characteristics of BD according to gender. The authors suggest that SP represents a potentially important specifier of BD. These findings indicate that seasonality may reflect increased severity or complexity of disorder.  相似文献

This essay investigates the contested processes through which gender and racial ideologies are practised and thereby place specific groups of women in particular gendered and racialized labour markets. The migration of female live-in care workers to Taiwan exemplifies how gender and racial ideologies are embodied in everyday practices that justify the paid care work done by these women and that produce their subordinate status. In this essay, I take the problematic of representation of ‘migrant care workers’ as a point of entry, to investigate how a gendered-racialized ideology is utilized to legitimate and naturalize the gendered-racialized division of care labour within the global capitalist context.  相似文献

By describing the everyday lives of African migrant mothers and their children in Morocco, this paper highlights how migration and ‘immobility’ in so-called ‘transit countries’ are gendering and gendered experiences. Relying on migrants' narratives, the paper demonstrates how migrants' transitions to motherhood create both specific and gendered spaces for agency and particular and gendered constraints upon agency that shape women migrants' mobility dynamics in space and time.  相似文献

According to Nira Yuval-Davis some of the most important ways in which women are involved in national projects concern their capacity as biological and cultural reproducers of the nation and guardians of its boundaries. In this article I argue that Jewish women in Mandate Palestine not only guarded and reproduced national boundaries, but also redefined them. Middle-class women's organizations acted as agents of ‘nationalization’ and westernization among Mizrahi (lit. Oriental) Jewish communities, who were largely excluded from the imagined community of the nation by Ashkenazi Zionists. I explain the conjunction of gender and ethnicity in the Zionist nation-building project through the life and letters of journalist and social activist Hannah Helena Thon. Two main factors serve as an explanation: the countries from which the leaders of the organizations emerged and their traditions of social work; and the position of middle-class women in the Jewish social field.  相似文献

When resource competition occurs between close relatives, the negative effects of competition are potentially amplified. However, kin selection theory predicts that natural selection should promote the evolution of mechanisms that minimize the intensity of competition between kin. Experimental tests of these hypotheses are mixed, however. Moreover, there is little consensus regarding the generality of either outcome, suggesting that the conditions important in determining the effects of competition between kin are likely complex and not fully understood. We performed two experiments using spadefoot toad tadpoles (Spea multiplicata) to evaluate the hypothesis that individuals can minimize the negative effects of exploitative competition by using alternative resources when competing with close relatives. Supporting our hypothesis, we found that only when individuals had access to alternative resources were the negative effects of competition between siblings less than between unrelated competitors. We suggest that mechanisms to lessen kin competition may be more likely to evolve in environments where alternative resources are available, and that selection to minimize exploitative competition between kin may promote the evolution of resource polyphenism. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2013, 110 , 689–695.  相似文献

Constant environments are often assumed to favor the evolution of specialization whereas exposure to changing environments may favor the evolution of generalists. Here we explored the phenotypic and molecular changes associated with evolving an RNA virus in constant versus fluctuating temperature environments. We used vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) to determine whether selection at a constant temperature entails a performance trade‐off at an unselected temperature, whether virus populations evolve to be generalists when selected in deterministically changing temperature environments, and whether selection under stochastically changing temperatures prevents evolved generalization, such as by constraining the ability for viruses to adaptively improve. We observed that all VSV lineages evolved at constant temperatures showed fitness gains in their selected temperature with little evidence for trade‐offs in performance in the unselected environment. Evolution in deterministically and stochastically changing temperatures led to populations with the highest and lowest overall fitness gains, respectively. Sequence analysis revealed little evidence for convergent molecular evolution among lineages within the same treatment. Across all temperature treatments, the majority of genome substitutions occurred in the G (glycoprotein) gene, suggesting that this locus for the cell‐binding protein plays a key role in dictating VSV performance under changing temperature.  相似文献
